How many hours a day is your heating on?

bigfishlittlefishtupperwarebox · 20/11/2025 21:36

I work out of the home. Mine is on for an hour in the morning and 3 hours in the evening but I'm finding it feels even colder than last winter at the moment (in northern England)

How many hours is yours set to go on at the moment?

It’s on permanently because it’s an air source heat pump, we have day and night time temps and it just keeps it constant. Bloody lovely. Daytime we have it at 19, night it is 16. House is ancient and thatched but very cosy.

I think with conventional heating you are still better off having it on a lower temp but on most of the time (eg 6am-11pm).

Kitchenbattle · 20/11/2025 21:42

I have no idea it’s not set to a timer it’s set on a thermostat. So it comes on when it needs and that’s it. It’s set at about 17/18deg. Ours is an air to water system.

Waitaminutewheresmejumper · 20/11/2025 21:42

Mine has been on nonstop the last couple of days. My house is always cold and if the heating is off and it gets super cold, it takes forever to warm up. I'm prepared to live off beans on toast for the next year to pay the gas bill, but I find cold very difficult to tolerate. Thankfully it's due to warm up next week so I can be a bit more frugal then.

happy20218 · 20/11/2025 21:43

Mines set on 22 ( I like a warm house ) on a thermostat. I was told this was a cheaper way

Pavementworrier · 20/11/2025 21:43

Thermostat at 16 so constantly atm

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 20/11/2025 21:44

We have a Wood burner which I light at 3.30 when the children come home and stays lit until the early hours (we put wood on at 10pm to see us through)

it’s cold in the day but it’s only me here and I just wrap up in a blanket or cuddle the dog.

Cat1504 · 20/11/2025 21:44

Not had it on yet …..we have the log burner on from 3pm to 11pm now ( we have free wood source) ..l.log burner heats back lounge and kitchen…heated airer heats the utility room.

IvedoneitagainhaventI · 20/11/2025 21:45

Mine just started coming on this week.
It's on for 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the early evening.

I'm retired and not out at work.

The house is fine during the day, even in this cold weather, without any heating on.I'm generally moving about and that keeps me warm and I go out for a while every day.

But I must say after the heating goes off in the evening after it's 2 hours it can be pretty miserable and I wear layers and have a throw over my knees.

Cheaper than what?

mamagogo1 · 20/11/2025 21:46

1 hour morning 2 hours evening, relatively new town house and toasty warm

Beekman · 20/11/2025 21:46

We never switch it off. It’s set to come on when it gets to a certain temperature and automatically lowers at night. It’s not on all the time but it’s never totally off.

Oldgreeneyedone · 20/11/2025 21:55

I am up north and my place has high ceilings, hard to heat.Last few days, had it on for about 8 hours,to get temperature up to 18.5 in day..I turn thermostat lower at night as have 3 fleece blankets as well as 13.5 tog duvet.I hate being cold.

Rainbow1901 · 20/11/2025 21:56

Thermostatically controlled - if it drops below a certain temperature it comes on automatically and goes off when it reaches the temperature DH has set.

ohtowinthelottery · 20/11/2025 21:57

We're both at home most of the time as we're retired. Heating comes on for 2 hours in the morning. The it's off until 4.30pm and stays on until 10pm.
Over the last few days we've lit the log burner in the living room at around 3pm as the temperature outside is dropping below freezing.
Our main heating runs off oil so we don't want to have it on all day as it's expensive. We never have it on overnight (except for the year it dropped to -18°C)

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 20/11/2025 21:58

It’s on permanently at the thermostat. At this time of year, it’s set to 20. Sometimes push it to 22-23 to give the heating a quick blast, otherwise if just stays at the stable temp.

Beekman · 20/11/2025 22:30

Is there any truth to the theory that it shookd
always be on and set to 16? That way when you want some heat out of it, it doesn’t have to work too hard to get to your desired temperature?

Cat1504 · 20/11/2025 21:45

Cheaper than what?

Having it on constantly at 23? 😂

Xmasbaby11 · 20/11/2025 22:48

So much at the moment. 2 hours in the morning then at least 5 hours later. It was 12 degrees before it came on today so takes a lot to warm the house up!

Ihad2Strokes · 20/11/2025 22:49

TLTR: varies every day.

My thermostat has been playing up so I have to turn it on/off manually at the moment. New one is arriving Saturday & I'm hoping the pairing is easy enough so that it's working Saturday night 🤞🏼🤞🏼

I used to have it come on for about 45 minutes before I got home from work & off about 11 pm, my work hours were variable so sometimes that was half an hour & sometimes 5 hours.

but that all went to pot when I had the stroke in January this year, last winter & this I just put it on whenever I'm cold & turn it off when I'm warm enough. This morning I put it on about 8am & turned it off just a short time ago (so it was on for about 14 hours!!🥹) but I have nerve damage & it's much more painful when it's cold, so it is what it is. I overpaid in summer to build up a decent amount if credit, I prefer that to paying a big bill.

when I get the new thermostat sorted I'll set it so that between 8am & 10pm it'll come on to keep the house about 18° in the hallway, which means it'll be about 21/22° in the living room. I'll keep moving it around/adjusting the temp until it's a comfortable heat in the living room & turn it down, but not off, when I go out.

soupyspoon · 20/11/2025 22:50

We set ours to come on at a certain temperature to get up to temperature. OH puts it lower like about 19, I wack it up to around 21 or 22 as I feel the cold now Im older. Awful, got reynards although no diagnosis and I cannot be cold its really painful

BrunchBarBandit · 20/11/2025 22:55

5.30 am - 11.30pm at the moment as it’s bloody freezing and we’ve got a Victorian house with single glazing. Brrrrrrr. Radiators are only switched on in rooms we are using, so that’s me running round the house checking they’re off in some rooms and putting them on in others eg DS bedroom before he goes up 😁

Fozzleyplum · 20/11/2025 23:00

We keep our thermostat at 16 all the time and occasionally put it up to 18 during the day.

15minutesaday · 20/11/2025 23:03

Today mine's been on from 6am and it's still on now. House temp was 14 degrees this morning and it's a toasty 21 degrees now.

If I'd been out all day I'd have left it on tickover at 16 degrees until I got in.

I'd like to know the answer to this too!

Moon30 · 20/11/2025 23:12

We have a new thermostat, our last one was ancient so we'd just turn it on when needed, but I've not really figured out how to work the new one yet, so still just been turning it on and off throughout the day.

I'm unsure if it would be cheaper to have it set to come on if the temperature drops below 17°c roughly or just set it to come on at certain times, our house doesn't really hold the heat so as soon as the heating goes off its cold again 😏
