How many hours a day is your heating on?

I work out of the home. Mine is on for an hour in the morning and 3 hours in the evening but I'm finding it feels even colder than last winter at the moment (in northern England)

How many hours is yours set to go on at the moment?

Not consistent.

I don't put it on in the morning at all - the bathroom warms up when the shower is on. I have a small electric heater in my bedroom I put on for five minutes while I get dressed.

If I then go out, it depends how cold it is when I get back whether I put it on, then it depends how late I stay up. I usually heat to 16.5 so even when I do put it on, it's not on much because that's usually only about two degrees more than the ambient temperature.

I'm at home today and I've not had any heating on. I might put it on later when dp comes round fur a Chinese.

Some days, it's on all day at 16.5, but I don't feel like that uses loads.

For this reason, I don't actually use the timer, I just turn it on or off when I feel like it. Luckily it's a small house and warns up fairly quickly. I always have the bedroom and bathroom windows open, so it's cooler upstairs. If it gets proper freezing I shut all bar my bedroom and the bathroom.

I’m on chemo and feel the cold badly. We had a woodburner installed and have that going constantly (with free wood) I only put the heating on if the rest of the house is really cold but it’s a 5 bed/3 story house so a lot to heat! We have oil plug in radiators for when need in the kids rooms and their lounge. Other than that we just heat the one room

Ireolu · 22/12/2025 07:56

thermostat at 20. App says on on average 5hrs a day in the last week. It's more efficient to heat from a maintained higher background temp than say from 13/14 degrees. We hardly need to boost the heating.

PlazaAthenee · 22/12/2025 08:14

It's 21° overnight and 22.5° in the day, so it flicks on and off according to the weather. It's a small house.
I really tried to have it at 19 and then 20 overnight but I was so cold and waking up every night. I need warm, dry air to sleep.

Walker1178 · 22/12/2025 08:34

Thermostat controlled at 20 degrees between 7am and 9pm. It’s off overnight and if we’re both out for the day will turn it down to 15 degrees

Fridgemanageress · 22/12/2025 22:27

The timer is on 18.5 during the day and about 15 at night. It seems to be cheaper that way. £112pm electric and gas with octopus

blankcanvas3 · 22/12/2025 22:30

Thermostat set at 22, it’s usually on for about 6 hours a day. We like a warm house

DiscoBeat · 22/12/2025 22:31

We have it on from 6am to 11pm, we don't have a thermostat but the room thermometers are usually at about 20.

landlordhell · 22/12/2025 22:33

We all work outside of the house. I get home at 4pm and turn thermostat to 19. We normally walk the dog around 7 and when I get back I am baking so turn it off. So it’s on 3 hrs.

Wow I have mine off at night and the big window open next to me! 😂

Growlybear83 · 22/12/2025 23:22

Our heating is set to about 24 degrees at the moment and is on from 6-10 am, 12-2 pm and then from 4-11pl. When it’s really cold, we leave it on overnight and turn it down to out 18 degrees.

caringcarer · 22/12/2025 23:23

Mines on all through the day from 7am until about 11pm at 20. If I feel cold I nudge it up to 21. Overnight it drops back to about 17. It will cost me a lot but I really hate being cold. I still have a fleece blanket folded double over me on sofa during the evening.

AlexaBeQuiet · 22/12/2025 23:26

On a thermostat so on and off 24 hours a day. Set the temperature at 21 in the day and 18 overnight, however if I wake up cold I’ll boost it using my phone up to 19.

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/12/2025 23:30

Under floor. We’re on the top floor in our block so benefit from everyone else’s heating. South facing floor to ceiling windows in the living areas/our bedroom so it gets very warm when the sun shines.
Has been a bit chilly today so we’ve put our bioethanol fire on this evening. Looks really pretty and raised the temp by 4 degrees in an hour or so.

Same here! It's set to come on at 5° overnight. During the day we generally have the bedrooms (upper floor) turned off, and the ground / middle floors at 18° from 6.30 - 3.00 then 20° until 8.30. The thermostat controls it in late autumn / winter / early spring.

vanillalattes · 22/12/2025 23:33

Ours is on for 2-3 hours a day maybe, set to 18. Off at night and windows wide open while we’re asleep.

Rosamutabilis · 22/12/2025 23:39

17 hours a day at various temperatures between 17.5 and 19, off for 7 hours at night. Obviously because there's a thermostat and radiator thermostats it goes on and off depending on the temperature if the rooms. The house loses heat quite quickly.

Having been a person who used to have it on only twice a day and boost in the day if necessary, I changed 3 years ago to having it on all day but at a lower temperature at certain points. It's now a comfortable temperature all day and the bills have hardly changed.

mondaytosunday · 23/12/2025 01:37

It’s on all the time, but doesn’t click on unless the temp inside drops below 18.

Darkdarknightinthedarkdarkstaircase · 23/12/2025 01:42

We have ours set to 19 degrees from 6.30am until 10pm, so it kicks in when it drops. I work from home alot and was so fed up with being cold last year so I tried to get our account into credit to cover the winter.

I'm so miserable with how much everything costs
