Reusing previous glasses frames

TheKatzKlaws · 24/09/2025 17:01

I need to review my glasses prescription soon and suspect I will need to get new glasses (short-sighted). At the moment I have two pairs of previous frames that I feel suit me and would like to reuse, rather than spend £100 or so. Most high street opticians unsurprisingly dont allow reuse of frames.

Has anyone used a service like this that they would recommend? I've seen a few online but would love to get some recommendations!

Thanks!

Specsavers let me reuse my old frames 6 months ago.

OhNoNotSusan · 24/09/2025 17:05

specsavers let dh use his old frames

CheltenhamLady · 24/09/2025 17:06

Tesco Specsavers allow it. If you look on ebay there are loads for sale, so someone must be doing it!!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/09/2025 17:07

Vision express and specsavers have both allowed me to do it. So long as I understood the frames could break and they would not be liable.

Bromptotoo · 24/09/2025 17:08

I use Boots opticians.

Last time I needed new lenses I couldn't find frames I liked and had the previous Ray Ban frame 're glazed'.

Bad news from @TheKatzKlaws perspective is that cost was no less than wih new frames.

EDIT: As above, no guarantee on old frames so if they shed an arm due to failed solder or metal fatigue it's on my watch.

muddyford · 24/09/2025 17:09

Specsavers have done it several times and an independent optometrist.

MarxistMags · 24/09/2025 17:09

Specsaver said I could do this depending on the frame and new lens size.

justasoul · 24/09/2025 17:10

I've had my glasses reglazed at Vision Express, including Ray Ban sunglasses at least once, maybe twice. It wasn't particularly cheap though, probably the same as their basic frames.

RedwallMattimeo · 24/09/2025 17:12

Last year, Specsavers told me they couldn’t do it; this year they told me they could do it but it was more expensive and I couldn’t benefit from the 2 for 1 deal so it was much better value to get new. Which annoys me.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 24/09/2025 17:14

I’ve used glasses direct online before and everything was ok.

whimsicallyprickly · 24/09/2025 17:16

Yes I've reused frames with specsavers because I like the frames. It wasn't very much cheaper, though , if at all. They do some jiggery pokery with deals and im excluded from the deals. Regardless, I like my old frames so I'm sticking with them!

abracadabra1980 · 24/09/2025 17:19

So long as they are decent frames you should be fine. Cheap frames wont hold the glass in, but saying that I’m currently wearing a £15 pair of sunglasses with £150 varifocals in them and they’ve done me this summer so far!

TheKatzKlaws · 24/09/2025 17:34

Thanks all. I'm really surprised, the last few times I asked it was a no (albeit that was a few years ago now so I should have properly checked). Shame it isn't any cheaper but just seems so wasteful and I really like these frames!

Spec savers have done it for many years I’m talking 15+ years, as have Asda opticians, vision express, Tesco opticians (when they were their own) and Boots.

Where were you asking? Was it a local independent or something? Even then, I’ve never known one not give the option tbh.

I’ve been having mine reglazed for several years because a) I like the frame and b) I only wear them occasionally as I wear lenses most of the time. Before that my previous Pair were reglazed around 3 times too.

I think it was Boots opticians, can't remember what the other was. Maybe they misunderstood me (or me them!). I know there are lots of online services but I can't help but prefer doing this in person.

Specsavers definitely do. DH has several pairs all with the same frames and he gets new lenses only everytime

Cellotapecandlestick · 24/09/2025 17:47

boots quoted me a cost for my variofocals with old frames that was higher than the cost with new frames 😒

theresnolimits · 24/09/2025 17:49

Specsavers did this for me about a month ago. Done in a week I paid £40 for the new lenses.

I have a very basic prescription for reading glasses; I don’t know whether more complex lenses cost more to fit.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/09/2025 18:08

Popspecs will regular frames

Its the same for me, the cost of the lenses replaced CAN be much more then buying new frames and lenses together - even with an online service . Ive a beautiful frame here, that really suits me, but Ive tried 3 places and all quoting £400 + :(

MellowPinkDeer · 27/09/2025 15:31

My daughter has just reused hers at Specsavers

Pixie2015 · 27/09/2025 15:35

boots was cheaper with new frames sadly as i have some lovely old frames

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 27/09/2025 16:08

Mine have always re-glazed and re-coated too (they don't charge for a re-coat either). Probably opticians just do not want to do it (too much agro / not enough profit), or it could be that some new prescriptions/ lenses don't sit well in new frames due to lens thining etc.

Rocknrollstar · 27/09/2025 16:09

We go to a private optician and I regularly reuse my frames.
