In Enid Blyton’s day food was relatively more expensive than it is today. Meals of tongue sandwiches with fruit cake for afters were likely unusual for most people even then. The picnics she described were just as much a idealised fantasy as young children going cycling and camping on their own, knocking on random farmhouse doors for food. Though puddings were a much more common element of meals. I remember when I was little potatoes were the main substance of the meal and if you were hungry you got more potato. But main meals (which included school dinners) always had pudding. Chocolate bars were rare though and one would be cut up to share between us.

Just reread my post and it makes me sound like I was born in the 50s! I am a lot younger than that!

I opened our fridge once saw a carrier bag, was curious so opened it was puzzled for a few moments then realised it was a whole raw tongue. Husband had been given one to cook. I nearly 🤢

Needless to say the kids and I wouldn't eat it. Even DH couldn't eat it all. So the dogs had it

As a meat eater I do think we shouldn’t be squeamish about eating offal, but I am quite happy to have my offal in sausages where I don’t recognise it.

OH we used to love spearing a pickled onion as kids and crunching them down. I have a sudden yearning for picalilli now 🤣

I always have a jar of pickled onions in my christmas stocking and sit in bed eating them while everyone else eats chocolate orange. I will pickle anything - got some pears pickling in the slow cooker right now and my mouth is watering just typing about vinegar-based delights.

Or Haggis. Delicious with a tomato sauce to take the pepperiness down a notch.

We buy haggis. Open up chicken breasts to make a pocket, stuff with haggis, wrap in streaky bacon and roast. Very nice

I am going to do some research into pickling pears, as this sounds just up my street.

I did mention upthread I am a SH dweller and we really only eat seasonally. What a relief that not only a lot of staple veg is in abundance again, but at rock bottom prices too. So I loaded up with with a 7kg pocket of onions and potatoes and bulk of peppers and tomatoes. And I have spent the best part of the afternoon chopping, slicing and dicing onions to freeze, made a huge amount of pasta sauce which I will freeze into portions as well.

I might roast a few onions too, as I do like them like that as a side. Any other ideas would be welcomed. They are large in size and I still have half a pocket left 😄. They won't really keep for an extended time as the weather is warming up now.

It's ridiculous how good I feel when I've had a fruitful haul like this.

MrsBobtonTrent · 25/09/2025 17:15

My two big go to solutions for too many onions (can there be such a thing?) are french onion soup for the freezer and also a pickled slaw we have a lot as a side. Either red onions and red cabbage, red wine vinegar, soft brown sugar, black currant cordial and ground allspice, add water and simmer for 1hr on hob, 2.5 hours in slow cooker. Or, normal onions, normal cabbage, sugar, lemon cordial, allspice. It keeps well in the fridge or freezer, but I would like to try jarring it. I'm a big fan of the bulk buy too.

We always had one in our fridge, my Mother would cook one each weekend. There was always a pigs cheek in there (along with the teeth), pickled eggs and onions. Imagine today's kids finding them in their fridge.
Lemon meringue and apple pie were Sunday regulars and a cooked custard tart mid week.
She also worked part time as the school lunch time helper. Looking back now I don't know where she found the time.

Thank you, the slaw sounds great.

I can't believe I forgot about caramelized onions, as this is so delicious and needs plenty onions.

Yes! I have! Both today and yesterday!

I used to know an American lady who made the most delicious cabbage and sausage casserole. She called the sausage keilbasa which I believe is just Polish for sausage. It was a smoked sausage and I think it was white cabbage. It was a simple and plain recipe and I've been thinking about it, anyone had something like it?

Dogaredabomb · 27/09/2025 22:59

Oh and she did another casserole pork and beans which I think was smoked pork and navy beans (pinto I think). Again a very plain dish. Both dishes were just chucked in the slow cooker and left all day.

I must confess I don't like spicy food which can get a bit limiting. I prefer British cuisine really. And the older I get the more I prefer plain cooking.

Is that waygu steak?

Bjorkdidit · 28/09/2025 19:42

It would be ridiculous if it was the only steak available, there weren't endless far cheaper alternatives such as pork or chicken or it was the price for one steak and not per kilo, so four generously sized steaks.

BeMellowAquaSquid · 28/09/2025 19:50

I buy 1kg of frozen mince in Morrisons and let it defrost over night think it’s £5.75 and perfectly tasty. Have also worked out our local Morrisons sticker their food on a Tuesday so we rush up there and grab what we can for the freezer. I think people have become really wasteful as well as prices going up.

TiredofLDN · 28/09/2025 20:44

Over £9 for 750g of mince in the asda today. Absolutely wild.

Dogaredabomb · 29/09/2025 02:29

I was remembering that my Mum used to boast that she could stretch half a pound of mince between five people.

But that's not such a feat is it? Would that be roughly 250g? So mince and tatties with onions, carrots, cabbage on the side, dumplings and a handful of oats thrown in.

Huh, I'll dig her up and complain.

That's just a glitch with their social media ad system. They're £54 a kilo.

HairsprayBabe · 29/09/2025 12:14

My kids actually love what my DF calls "war food" things my grandma used to give him (df) when he was a child - I shall be digging out the rationing cookbook I think

We did a faux roast this weekend - I roasted some extra veg along side that was looking a little sad in the drawer - and we had sausages instead of a chicken, I'm veggie anyway so unless chicken is on offer it makes no sense to buy one while the kids are young and don't eat much of it - or maybe it does because it would give us meat for the week? I don't know I have confused myself here.

meals for this week:
Friday - I was out a work thing DH fed the kids nursery tea then had boy dinner which I think was a sausage and egg breakfast sandwich
Saturday - pasta and "meatballs"
Sunday - faux roast
Monday - Curry, we have half of last weeks frozen still
Tuesday - home made pizza
Wednesday - the kids are at my mums so me and DH will scrounge the freezer
Thursday - Black bean wraps

One thing I do remember is that mum would give us a slice of bread dipped into the meat juices from the Sunday roast as a starter to fill us up before having a smallish portion of the roast as a main. This was the late 80s/early 90s but we were always skint. It's actually quite a good idea, I think yorkshire puddings were often eaten as a starter too for the same purpose of filling stomachs cheaply!

justasking111 · 29/09/2025 18:14

Lidl today sirloin steak £41 per kilo.

We used to have a plate of bread and butter in the middle of the table every meal, to fill up on. Meals were very carb heavy, but we had no snacks between meals so we were ravenous by mealtimes.
