Ah you’re welcome ☺️. The soft what loaf is gluten free 😆 so ridiculously priced. But I do claim 20% of all gluten free foods back through my tax so it’s a little bit beneficial that way.

Oh that makes sense that it's gluten free.

That is then really cheap compared to what we would pay. Anything gluten free is so very expensive here. I am on a gluten free diet as well, so maize and corn are my staples.

Our eggs were really expensive at one point earlier this year, but thankfully that situation has resolved. As well as beef which I mentioned upthread. Nothing much else is being reduced in price though , it does seem each time I do a shop things are priced higher each time.

Yes the gluten free items are expensive aren’t they. I have a portion of gluten free pasta left over for me for this week and a few gluten free sausages in the freezer that I will use in my portion of the sausage casserole. I try to keep things as simple as possible and eke out the items I need. It’s working so far so I’m happy. I was worried that being coeliac would drive up my food bill hugely.

Aldi hot chocolate is quite acceptable, around £2 a jar. I buy the 40cals one in the lighter tub and have done for years.

I have a jar of Stockwell (tesco basic) hot chocolate just sitting in my cupboard but I can't make myself drink it 🤣

Dogaredabomb · 21/09/2025 09:34

I've probably imagined it but didn't gluten free items used to be on prescription or something?

I have no idea, maybe in England? I’m based in Ireland and I don’t know to be honest. I’m not long diagnosed. 20% tax back is what we get here

MidnightMeltdown · 21/09/2025 10:23

I think we’ve got used to underpaying for food and now the tide is turning. Historically, food was a much higher percentage of wages. The good times are over.

Ragruggers · 21/09/2025 10:27

We are stuck with these prices so we need to adapt our food budget to what we have.I am old but the amount of extras that so many people buy didn’t exist in the 50/60s .We ate breakfast mainly cereal and toast a school lunch now here is the problem with feeding children most primary children are offered a healthy choice but senior school is awful.Cheesy chips eaten in the playground, fizzy drinks quick snack food.We didn’t eat snack foods and so called treats on a daily basis there were treats at the weekend only. The evening meal was basic yes there was meat chicken was a treat. We had a pudding sponge type with custard. The majority of the population were thin.Yes biscuits, chocolate are nice but do we need to eat them every day?We need to rethink the way we live because feeding our selves is getting harder.

Maybe just for those diagnosed as coeliac? Definitely not for those who are just jumping on the gluten-free bandwagon, thank goodness.

justasking111 · 21/09/2025 12:35

Lidl do a low gluten bread in their bakery section and gluten free pasta now. Menopause made me intolerant to it so I changed. Ditto lactose in milk. Very annoying.

Seaside3 · 21/09/2025 13:48

@justasking111 I swapped to sourdough from a bakery, if you have a decent one near by try it. If I eat too much gluten I definitely know about it so we only eat pasta occasionally too.

A friend of ours used to make it. The supermarket version lets say there's no equivalent.

isthesolution · 21/09/2025 14:16

Its awful. Even what used to be a basic cheap meal - spag Bol and garlic bread for example is costing around £10 whereas I used to be able to do it for half that!

PestoHoliday · 21/09/2025 14:24

I spend a stupid amount on bread. Usually pay £4.50 a loaf for malted sourdough. It does last me about a fortnight because I only have bread as toast and I can freeze some of it. But I'd rather have little of a lovely thing than lots of a naff thing.

My fill-us-up food is eggs. We have hens so eggs are plentiful for 9 months of the year as a freebie bonus for our choice of pet. Bloody wonderful things, eggs.

Also chickpeas - a quick chana masala, hummus, bulking out a soup or stew. I buy them dried and use a pressure cooker so they are extremely cheap. Also nicer than tinned.

A full freezer and well stocked kitchen cupboard make me feel secure. My disability ebbs and flows, so knowing there's plenty in to feed us if I'm incapacitated is reassuring.

Seaside3 · 21/09/2025 16:47

@isthesolution what do you put in your spag bol and how many people do you feed? £10 seems a lot.

Im so glad you liked it! I lt adds a lot of flavour and really is simple.

Thanks to this thread I've added pearl barley to my shopping list, so I'll be using that with my mumsnet chicken.

Me again. Wish would you recommend… roast the veg and freezing it… or making the entire soup and freezing it? Or is either okay? Thanks…

Dogaredabomb · 21/09/2025 19:28

I've been freezing rolls singly in dog poo bags, cheap and they do the job. Unused of course 🤣

Are they food safe???

Happyjoe · 21/09/2025 19:36

I must say that it's so nice to see a thread turn into people helping each other, how lovely and also.. refreshing!

buffyfaithfredwesley · 21/09/2025 19:43

I think people will go back to basics
I know people post about needing 2 roast chickens etc on here but you can stretch the meat if you add roasted carrots (delicious and cheap), roasted parsnips, more potatoes, stuffing etc etc
stews but with dumplings added

I just made a lovely pasta bake with the ends of the fridge tray! Tomatoes, onions, courgettes, couple of pieces of chopped bacon, the very end of some Parmesan, a ball of mozzarella, tinned tomatoes, pasta and herbs

Yes, it really is. I need to stop opening threads that I know are going to be toxic and stick to ones like this.

Don't know but they're bio degradable I think

Why not just use small plastic bags designed for food use? I wouldn't use any plastic not made for food use.

Either works just fine.

If you want to freeze soup and aren't sure of containers, a plastic milk jug filled 75% full of soup works very well.

It didn't even occur to me.

How do people find Olio? I managed to get around £10 of food today (grapes, 2x Cherry tomatoes, pressed apple juice, cress and really lovely blue cheese) and I spent around £2 in petrol going to 3 different homes to collect
