I'm never buying one again. I cannot waste my money.

If it's a government plan to encourage healthy eating, I think it works.

This last quarter prices have really tipped upwards again. What insane prices have you seen?

I tried to buy a box of chocolate for a friend this week and cannot believe the price jumps since Christmas.

Some things have just become too expensive to justify now...drinking at the pub, meals out, chocolate, fish and chips...people are just going to stop doing it/buying stuff.

But a whole pineapple for under a pound and a pink grapefruit for under 30p…
strange how some things are still cheap, especially a pineapple which would need a lot of transportation costs

I don't think I've seen a grapefruit for that price in a long time. Are they not closer to 60p now?

I see that Lidl have put their cartons of tomato juice up from 99p to £1.29. That's quite a jump.

Em308 · 19/07/2025 10:48

£3.50 for a watermelon - was 10p less the week before as well.

caramac04 · 19/07/2025 10:49

Yes the cocoa harvests have been very poor and has led to massive price increases. I feel sorry for bakers who try to absorb the costs but still make a profit.
Less sympathy for the major chocolate brands just because I always think they’re making massive profits. No research on that, just what I perceive.
I wouldn’t pay that much for a flake. I’ve thankfully given up chocolate because it’s bad for me and fattening. Now I can say it’s also too expensive.
Sometimes it feels like all the little pleasures are being eroded. (I know it’s not and there are lots of good things but sometimes a cuppa and a bar of chocolate with your feet up is just the thing).

@Wheech Lidl currently has red grapefruits for only 29p each in their Pick of the Week. The regular price seems to be 45p each www.lidl.co.uk/p/red-grapefruit/p10033021

Tesco have got a bar of chocolate on clubcard offer just now for £7.95 or thereabouts, the normal price is £10. It's a normal sized bar of chocolate. I would expect a lot more than an eating experience for that price.

66babe · 19/07/2025 10:58

Every week I would buy which ever 6 pack of crisps was on offer for £1
Usually - French fries or something similar, wasn’t too fussed
Now these bags are almost 3 quid and the cheapest bag i found in Aldi is £1.25
I do feel ridiculous eating a bag of crisps designed for a 4 year old

LaurieFairyCake · 19/07/2025 11:00

All chocolate and crisps now needs to be planned in our house. I go to b and m and buy multipacks of everything for about 3-6 months (I don’t go often).

at the moment I have about 200 bags of crisps in the house 😬 as I went last week

BlueandPinkSwan · 19/07/2025 11:11

I'm feeling smug, must have saved a small fortune since giving up chocolate for health reasons,

TizerorFizz · 19/07/2025 11:13

Chocolate has had a big price hike due to raw material costs. It’s been widely reported. You don’t need flakes. Maybe buy 70% bar once a month? Less sugar, better quality chocolate.

PandoraSocks · 19/07/2025 11:15

My DH likes a particular bar of M&S chocolate. It is now £4!

hattie43 · 19/07/2025 11:33

I had gardeners around the other day so went to get them a mars bar for coffee break . £1.30 each , I’m just not paying it . Coffee and a shared pack of biscuits it was .

TheCurious0range · 19/07/2025 11:35

I saw a freddo in a garage for 85p

LittlleMy · 19/07/2025 11:45

The worst thing is the price of a single unit is usually only a pound or so away from getting a multipack of 3 or 4 so I personally just can’t stomach eg paying 0.90 for one wispa when the same store sells 4 all together for £1.75! And then despite only wanting one I will of course before the weekends out have eaten them all! 😭

I had to stop eating grapefruits as they got too expensive, which shop has them for under 30p?

Even in Aldi this week on offer they are more then that

mugglewump · 19/07/2025 11:51

The cocoa harvest have been poor, affected by climate change so prices of chocolate has soared as supply is scarce.

mickandrorty · 19/07/2025 12:00

freddo bars! not only are they much smaller than they used to be you only get 4 in a pack for £1.40 now!

ScoobyBooby · 19/07/2025 12:03

Cadbury Freddo 6 pack is now a 5 pack and £1.50 , same for the dairy milk thins used to get 6 now only 4 !! It’s absolutely shocking .

Funnywonder · 19/07/2025 12:42

I paid £1.40 for a Starbar yesterday. I wouldn’t normally even consider paying that for a chocolate bar but it was for my son who was on the way to a long and potentially stressful appointment. It pained me though!

Poobs2022 · 19/07/2025 12:51

Aldi veggie mince is now in 400g bags instead of 500g and last year I bought 1kg of Callebeaut chocolate chips for baking - I paid £15. Now they're about £23. I used to bake all the time but I can't justify the cost to do it just for fun. Making brownies with chocolate will cost me about £7. We buy what we can in bulk from Costco. Branston beans works out 50p a tin rather than £1 in Sainsburys .

suki1964 · 19/07/2025 12:53

Cocoa prices doubled last year - climate change is causing poor harvests.

Same with the olive oil

We are living is the perfect storm, climate change, high fuel prices, rising wages , higher taxes - its no wonder prices are rising so quickly

TizerorFizz · 19/07/2025 13:06

@PandoraSocks Cheaper than beer though!

dottiedodah · 19/07/2025 13:22

Sainsburys have a 4 pack for £ 2.00.I try not to buy anything singly always more expensive .I like those protein bars £ 3.00 for 1 ! (in services so i guess it's more expensive )Shopping is mad now .Meat off the scale even a pasty "£1.70)

You don't have to use expensive chocolate chips to make brownies, I've made some this morning using normal supermarket ingredients and it won't have cost anything like that and they taste delicious

Seems a shame not to bake for that reason
