Remember when you used to be able to buy several things with a pound. Or go into a charity shop and buy something for up to 25p. I could’ve sworn even milk was 40p, 20 years ago.

Yeah it's depressing how little it gets you now. You can borrow a trolley for a £1 deposit I suppose 😕

thenewaveragebear1983 · 23/05/2025 16:39

Even Poundland has changed to ‘get more for your £1’ now, because virtually nothing in there costs £1 anymore!

Dearg · 23/05/2025 16:41

I remember buying 1 litre of milk for 90p for MIL circa 2019 . It’s ridiculous how much things cost

ThatDenimExpert · 23/05/2025 16:45

I could’ve done a full shop for about £40 20 years ago

I remember going co-op for bread in the early 00s with a £1 and coming back without the bread as Warburtons had gone to £1.02

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 23/05/2025 19:23

In the spring of 2008 I spent several weeks in hospital and when I cane out diesel had gone over £1 a litre for the first time.

Milk costs less than that now.

Womblingmerrily · 23/05/2025 19:30

Still can just about

Spaghetti 28p (500g)
Tinned tomatoes 45p
Tinned chickpeas or kidney beans 40p

Books are 25p in my local charity shop - they also have a £1 rail and a 10p box for children

andtheworldrollson · 23/05/2025 19:31

It’s not that long ago that the average cost of my weekly shop worked out as £1 per item with things like posh coffee being twice that

SwanOfThoseThings · 23/05/2025 19:40

Do you remember minus 1p baked beans in Tesco in the late 90s? It was loss leader and they would subtract 1p from your bill for each tin - I think you were limited to 5 per shop.

Absolute boon to me back in the days when I was on a tiny wage.

GYBE4 · 23/05/2025 19:46

I was really poor from 2000 to 2002. I used to be able to buy a loaf of bread, a tub of butter, and some tins of Heinz beans and sausages for a couple of pounds. I lived on that.

For the same amount now, I could get the bread and one cheap tin of beans. Sausages with the beans would be an extravagance. As for just waltzing in and buying Heinz! Those days are long gone.

I never imagined I'd be romanticising my teenage poverty meals.

I do! I had a cupboard full of them thanks to Mum packing me off.

Bean wars!

As a student we could go out with a tenner, get into a club, have far too many drinks and still have change for a share of the taxi home.

Yes, about 10 years ago I used to work on the basis that a weekly shop worked out at about £1 per item, on average. Now it’s about £2.50

Remember the ones and dots stuck on the price boards, as most didn't have the additional space

AntaresAltered · 24/05/2025 03:13

I remember shopping with my family in the 80s when they had new supermarkets that weren’t all chains. My mum complaining yoghurts had gone up to 13 and a half pence. First time I really noticed things cost money.

forgotmyusername1 · 24/05/2025 10:54

My husband took over the weekly shop during covid and I haven't done it since

On the rare occasion I have to go to a supermarket it is a series of 'how much' moments

Abbyant · 24/05/2025 22:03

I was reminiscing with my sister the other day about how our dad would give us £1 each on a Friday to go into the corner shop, we’d get a panda pop, bag of sweets and crisps an usually have pennies left over. We’d have to give our children £3-£5 to get the same amount now.

Knittedfairies2 · 24/05/2025 22:11

I'm old enough to remember when a full size Mars bar cost 4d; pre-decimalisation, so about 2p. When I started driving, petrol was 32p a gallon (There are about 4 and a half litres to the gallon) - and I thought that was expensive!)

Tiredofwhataboutery · 26/05/2025 06:29

You used to get 4 tins of Heinz beans for a quid.

screwyou · 26/05/2025 06:31

Dbro recently had a lovely new kitchen fitted and was showing me his walk in pantry. I knew he must be doing well as he had loads of Heinz beans in there, who would've thought buying Heinz beans would be a sign of wealth?! 😂

TheNightingalesStarling · 26/05/2025 06:32

Penny sweets actually costing a penny... 2p for some of the big ones.
10p after school to get out pick n mix

pelargoniums · 26/05/2025 06:48

For me, it’s 10-pence mix-ups, penny sweets. What can you buy with copper coins now?

Big bags of Haribo have gone from £1 to £1.70 in our local supermarket 😭

Ecrire · 26/05/2025 06:55
