Remember when you used to be able to buy several things with a pound. Or go into a charity shop and buy something for up to 25p. I could’ve sworn even milk was 40p, 20 years ago.

I haven’t bought baked beans in ages and fancied some recently. I was shocked at how much a tin of Heinz is. I think the last time I bought them, they were around 40-60p.
I always assumed they were a cheap food. Tescos own brand ones are pretty cheap.

I love baked beans. I was a proper beanz means Heinz back in the 90s. I’ve only bought supermarket ones for decades. M and S do the nicest ones at 50p a tin.

Dbro recently had a lovely new kitchen fitted and was showing me his walk in pantry. I knew he must be doing well as he had loads of Heinz beans in there, who would've thought buying Heinz beans would be a sign of wealth?! 😂

I was helping my elderly neighbour unload shopping and she had small size heinz beans. I managed to keep my mouth shut 😁

LividRah · 27/05/2025 08:42

I definitely remember a BBC-style TV news report that a pint had hit £1 for the first time.

Early 90s, maybe?

DiscoBeat · 27/05/2025 09:25

I used to fill up my little motorbike with petrol for £1!

DiscoBeat · 27/05/2025 09:29

I've been following the coffee I buy. Over the last 2 years it's gone from £2.15 to £3.30 for a 227g bag.

TheGrimSmile · 27/05/2025 09:39

The price of coffee and olive oil are surreal.

TheGrimSmile · 27/05/2025 09:40

Basically you don't get much change from twenty quid for a jar of decent coffee and large bottle of olive oil.

Daffodilsarefading · 27/05/2025 09:45

I remember Netto- remember them? Selling Mars bars for 9 pence. Every single customer at the tills had a few random items plus several mars bars!

BobbyBiscuits · 27/05/2025 09:50

A pint in the west end of London in 1996 was about £2-£2.50. student bars elsewhere did drinks for a pound.
I used to buy 10p beans and 2p plastic bread from Kwik saves. A pack of ten fags (remember 10s?) was £1.30 ish.

AdoraBell · 03/06/2025 22:17

Sainsbury have £1 offers on the website.

When my children were young, our food budget as a family of 6 was £40 a week. That would be 15 years ago.

Hahaha its the modern marker of wealth! I saw a cupboard full of branded toiletries in someone's bathroom, and knew they must be doing ok. And it wasn't even anything high end, just big bottles of Lynx, branded toothpastes etc,

Yes, I remember this! Because we still had the half penny, you could actually get more than 10 sweets.
God, I'm old.

In the 90s, I’d get my pocket money on a Saturday and I remember I would buy a packet of crisps and a bar of chocolate for less than 50p. I remember a portion of chips was 70p, where I am they’re now £4.50!

Do you remember minus 1p baked beans in Tesco in the late 90s? It was loss leader and they would subtract 1p from your bill for each tin - I think you were limited to 5 per shop.

Absolute boon to me back in the days when I was on a tiny wage.

I remember the baked beans war!

SingleAHF · 17/06/2025 22:55

I paid £1 for a Warburton loaf in Iceland yesterday

I paid £4.80 for a bag of takeaway chips by the seaside today.

It’s not that long ago that the average cost of my weekly shop worked out as £1 per item with things like posh coffee being twice that

I mentioned this recently. My mum and SIL told me that couldn't have been the case unless I was grocery shopping in the 1970s, which is before I was born.
It was mid 2000s and we could pretty much guess how much the shop would cost based on £1 per item.
Im sure we used to buy a leg (maybe half a leg) for a couple of pounds too.

Alacartemenu · 18/06/2025 08:39

I miss those days when certain magazines would occasionally be on special offer for £1. Like Grazia. was cheap anyway but the £1 made it a bargain treat. Now it's £3.50!

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 18/06/2025 22:16

I got my first 3 singles records for exactly £1.00 when I was nine,
They were 6s 8d each.
