What’s good in Lidl? (Vs Tesco)

Hi all - first time posting. Going to try Lidl soon as Tesco is just so expensive and I find they don’t always have good offerings for own brands. Examples being, kids snacks and azera type coffee. By snacks I mean own brand biscuits/bear yoyo type things.

what are your must buys?! What should I look out for?

I do love getting a Tesco delivery as it’s less stressful - but could do hybrid!

Just thought of something else - their Greek honey is truly lovely but I’m not sure if they have it all the time. I have that with the thick 10% Greek yoghurt.

bakery / yoghurt / cheese / mini magnum type icecream / bottled beer
I can buy most of what I need there but think some of the veg and fruit is poor

Blackcountrychik83 · 28/04/2025 22:30

Noticed over the weekend Tesco put their own brand carton of Milkshake upto £1.10 from £1 and today I passed Lidl so popped in for a drink and they were 89p in there 21p difference !

SatsumaCat · 28/04/2025 22:35

I go for chocolate, smoked salmon and whole free range chicken on the basis of those being better and cheaper. (It's been a while since I compared the price with Tesco directly though)

RobinEllacotStrike · 28/04/2025 22:38

Nuts are great at both Lidl & Aldi. Also chia seeds.

cheese - goat, cottage, feta, others on offer.

chocolate covered rice cakes, & Madeline’s for DC. dried mango. tinned mandarins.

and I’ll usually pick something up from the country of the week.

I like the fruit & veg & don’t have problems with it going off.

Mere1 · 28/04/2025 22:41

Lidl is good for bread and, especially, cheese. The vintage Gouda is our favourite. We love Greek week when there are special desserts, large beans in tomato sauce and canned aubergine. Fruit and veg are good quality and early morning veg boxes are bargains. The wine ranges are quality, especially those ranked 88 and up. Their brands of pasta and ‘Cornetto’ are money saving and good. I could go on. I have Ocado deliveries for heavy basics and M&S treats.

Fozzleyplum · 28/04/2025 22:43

I shop at Lidl, not for budgetary reasons, but because I like their products and the store I go to provides a much calmer, more civilised shopping experience than Tesco and Sainsburys.

I cook from scratch and make my own bread, and Lidl ingredients are as good as those from the larger supermarkets.

The own brand washing powder is good, and I buy their huge pouches of washing up liquid and decant it. They have some very good dupes for Molton Brown, l'Occitane and other brands. The themed weeks offer some real bargains and the wine and spirits (especially the Hortus gin) are good. They have as a standard line, a Picpoul wine for about £8, for example.

tunapicklesandwich · 28/04/2025 23:58

recently switched to Lidl. Love their own brand chocolate digestives, high protein frozen range and chocolate puddings, fresh sushi, three berry marmalade, summer plants, fat free strained yoghurt, frozen fruit

mepipesneedlagging · 29/04/2025 01:05

Will only buy my unsalted nuts in Lidl. Pecans, Almonds, Walnuts and Brazils are top quality.

Will only buy Tesco bananas though.
The Lidl ones taste of nothing.
Rarely enter Aldi or Asda. Just being inside both shops irritates me immensely 😁

mepipesneedlagging · 29/04/2025 01:07

Oh - and the Tesco golden yolk free range eggs (orange box) are superb 😋

DrPrunesqualer · 29/04/2025 01:39

Everything is great
The only things we get elsewhere ie Aldi are baked beans, cat food and own brand butter

we aren’t keen on Lidls for these

Huge savings to be made
Their own brand washing powder is great and a big saving
Theyve got coffee beans back this week as well usually 75/80p per 100g

As a pp noted their jams are gorgeous
We like their own brand weetabix

Get the APP !
After you’ve spent £250 ( in a month ) you get 10% off your next shop up to a maximum of £20 off.
You also get freebies as you spend. So spend £50 get a free pastry for example. We’ve had free face creams, cleaning stuff all sorts

Actually I recommend their Cien face creams. Extremely inexpensive and do reduce fine lines. They sometimes do their Q10 range which is lovely too.

With the exception of the few items at the beginning of my post we buy everything from Lidl. We’re off tomorrow for a larder stock up as we have our 10% discount to spend.

I would say Aldi stuff is just as great it just doesn’t have the discount app which is why we’ve switched.

DrPrunesqualer · 29/04/2025 01:50

I’ve just noticed everyone is commenting on the Greek Yoghurt.
I’m sure Lidl only do Greek ‘Style’ yoghurt ?…….. or maybe that’s a local availability thing as it’s all they do in ours in Whitstable and Folkestone 🙁

so OP you may find things vary based on area

Wigtopia · 28/04/2025 20:47

🤣🤣 I quite like the weetbixies from Lidl! 🤭 just me I think!!

No not just you 🥳
I like the weetabix. ( I like the Aldi weetabix too )
but then I don’t have a problem with their fruit and veg either which some on here have criticised and I’m definitely going to eat the next banana slower next time to see what the problem might be 🤣🤣🤣They are all lovely.
No different from more expensive stores at all.

MrsFezziwig · 29/04/2025 02:14

Bakery cheese twists!
Pastels de nata are ok & the only place I can get them locally, but they’re a bit on the stingy side so I have to eat them as pairs.
Never noticed the almond croissants so I’ll have to track them down.,

LezUlez · 29/04/2025 02:25

Until this week, I would have said I like everything, but I got a piece of brisket from them last week that was truly awful, and I've had chicken pieces too that are not great. So I'm going to be cautious about the fresh meat in future. I like particular brands of some few things, so I get those from Ocado. But mostly, Lidl is good because the smallness of it means that on a Saturday you can be in and out very quickly.

Try the yumyums too. They do them with caramel as well for that really sweat tooth

In fact OP I’ve decided to answer in the medium of art

Lets not forget the short queues !
Less choice so less of a dilemma what to chose
Quicker shop due to the above
and the savings ££££

WonderingWanda · 29/04/2025 02:52

I find that the chicken from Lidl is much poorer quality, full of water and half the size once cooked.

There whole Chorizo is way cheaper but I've not used it yet so can't comment.

Also cheap for things like crisps, Canned goods etc.

There gluten free pasta is for nicer than Asia's own brand which just dissolves in hot water.

All the chicken comes from British farms so it can’t be full of water

caringcarer · 29/04/2025 03:08

Breads and bakery products. Meat. Flowers.

They are allowed to add 5% water without declaring it and when you cook the chicken from lidle it is noticeable that it shrinks and released more water.

LuckyManifestations · 29/04/2025 04:39

Not a fan of the bakery at all, and find the fruit and veg a bit meh.

However their own brand of Jaffa cakes are delicious, much better, more orange filling and far cheaper than the branded.

Also oven chips and onion rings are cheap and good quality.

Chellybelle · 29/04/2025 04:45

I shop at Lidl sometimes, most things are good. They have a range of Lush and Sanctuary dupe shower gels. But I prefer Aldi. I don't always think you can do about full weekly shop at Lidl without needing to do a top up shop and they change the range too quickly. I find something I like in there and then never see it again.

EleanorReally · 29/04/2025 05:31

their danpak is good
sometimes good value cooking oil
shampoo
mayonnaise

Yes! I also get the majority of fruit and veg from them too and have no complaints!🙂
