What’s good in Lidl? (Vs Tesco)

Hi all - first time posting. Going to try Lidl soon as Tesco is just so expensive and I find they don’t always have good offerings for own brands. Examples being, kids snacks and azera type coffee. By snacks I mean own brand biscuits/bear yoyo type things.

what are your must buys?! What should I look out for?

I do love getting a Tesco delivery as it’s less stressful - but could do hybrid!

I get a weekly Tesco delivery and do a top up shop in Lidl mid week.

Eggs, bread flour, nuts, seeds, frozen salmon, frozen veg (sweetcorn and peas), canned mackerel, canned sweetcorn, chilled pizza bases, yoghurt, halloumi, feta, ice cream, biscuits, crisps, tea bags, Italian week espresso coffee beans, fresh pastries and bread are all cheaper and good quality in Lidl. For kids I get fruit pouches, wipes, bear yoyo type snacks (although I haven’t seen them in store lately) and rice cakes. These are also all good and cheaper than Tesco. The nappies are ok, but not as good as pampers imo. They’re much cheaper so I use them during the day when I change them often, but not at night.

Milk, butter and pasta are the same price in both supermarkets, so I usually get them in my Tesco delivery for convenience.

The fresh fruit and veg are not great in Lidl. Often you find some that are already bad in a bag or punnet. They don’t last very long and often are not tasty (blueberries or mangoes are sour, but if you keep them more than a couple of days they just go off for example). Their ‘green’ bananas are already ripe and then go black very fast, although DH still eats them, so I buy them occasionally.

Thanks - that’s interesting you do that split also. Good to note the kinds of items.

they do a 100% NUTS peanut butter which is a fraction of the price of Pip & Nut and tastes EXACTY the same called Maribel, plus their high fruit conserves are delicious as is most of the chocolate, lovely crackers and they do a scottish all butter shortbread which won a blind taste test . The regional weeks throw up some very interesting products, lovely continental cheeses for example.

i have noticed with the price match in tesco their aus chardonnay is real plonk compared to the Lidl one they are comparing it to. The Hortus small batch gin is also fantastic

random one - the huge roll of white non stick baking paper

Edited

Oh fab - we get through a lot of nut butter so that’s helpful!

I also do a split shop. Lidl first then Tesco for the stuff that Lidl don't sell. About 75% of the people I see in Lidl are then at Tesco doing exactly the same.

BurntBroccoli · 28/04/2025 16:49

The bread is lovely, much fresher and the chocolate brownies are gorgeous!

I also like their authentic Greek Yogurt (10%) one.

Flytrap01 · 28/04/2025 16:50

not much,

BurntBroccoli · 28/04/2025 16:51

Oh the garlic bread slices with Mozarella are good. And the feta as someone else mentioned.

Lidl wine gums are the best available. They're seriously delicious.

Crème brulé are also excellent.

The in-store bakery is excellent.

(Sorry, I'm not sure why i quoted the OP)

CurlewKate · 28/04/2025 16:55

I like Lidl for most things. I tend to buy fruit somewhere else, and bread. Cheese, cold meat, groceries are good. I don’t buy a lot of ready meal type things, but the ones I’ve had have been good. And they often have free
range chicken .

Oh, I forgot the in store bakery! It’s the sliced bread I’m not keen on. The rye bread is good.

Flytrap01 · 28/04/2025 16:58

if im honest most items are ok, but i do like the different enrgy drinks , and tool items, sometimes the yougarts are good depending ,

minnienono · 28/04/2025 16:59

The main thing about Lidl is that they carry a smaller range, very few brands but otherwise it no different really. It’s my nearest supermarket so I always shop in Lidl unless I need something more exotic

Am in France not in UK but I think the fruit & veg in Lidl is utterly crap! Here it doesn’t last and the selection is rubbish. 3/4 of the shop is food in packets. Maybe it’s different in the UK I don’t know. The only thing I’ve ever used from Lidl and thought was nice was a hand soap at my mums. It was in a French style bottle and very strong lavender scent! My mum asked if it was the same as the one we have in our downstairs toilet which she remembered as being amazing- it isn’t the same one, the one I had was Diptyque but the fact she thought this one could’ve been the same says something serious about it!!

I think the plants and flowers at Lidl are good sometimes. I suspect in the UK they match Tesco prices mostly anyway!

Yes I have that Lavender soap and body wash. I bought it for my son as it’s actually a neutral scent - quite botanical. I use it too now instead of my Molton Brown!

RaraRachael · 28/04/2025 17:05

The only thing I don't like about Lidl is that they're sometimes inconsistent. I love the natural yoghurt with honey but can't guarantee it will be available every week which can be annoying

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 28/04/2025 18:47

Avoid the ‘weetabix’ they are awful - tescos weetabix are lovely, the Lidl mueslis and granola are delicious and made by Jordan’s who make ‘Dorset cereals’(near me) its also the Ryvita production facility

come back and let us know what you think OP 🛒🛍️

RaraRachael · 28/04/2025 19:42

The Lidl "Weetabix" made me gag even with hot milk.
I had to fling it out.

Miley23 · 28/04/2025 19:49

Lidl fruit and veg I find to be rubbish. We like their packs of frozen fish, tuna steaks etc and good for staples like eggs, cans of tuna, pasta. bakery is great and things like dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid are fine. Love their rhubarb and Rose handwash.Cheese is fine and greek yoghurt and nuts much cheaper than other places.

It’s literally so vile isn’t it like cardboard no matter how many litres of milk you use. Must try harder with that one Lidl !

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 28/04/2025 20:37

@Miley23 I like the golden yolk eggs at £1.89 for six.i think the ‘deluxe’’ (?) range black label products in there are all good quality, the cheddar cheeses especially

they also do higgidy pie and quiche copies which are nice

CraftyNavySeal · 28/04/2025 20:42

We like their ginormous noodle ready meals, called something Goreng. Also Kinder pingui, Italian ham, Italian fizzy water, “Bitterol” spritzes in a can for 85p, Soya milk and massive cartons of barista oat milk, naice hand soap. Everything else is alright. We find we save money because there is just less stuff.

It’s also worth downloading their app you can get something free quite often and discounts on some items.

🤣🤣 I quite like the weetbixies from Lidl! 🤭 just me I think!!

NeilDiamondsBlowDry · 28/04/2025 20:56

the dairy Lea dunker copies are ten times nicer they have breadsticks and crackers the breadsticks are the nicest 🐷 I think they are called ‘dip and Munch’

RedPanda2022 · 28/04/2025 21:02

We are quite often getting a Tesco delivery and then about once a month I go to Lidl. It is a bit further and I can get everything from Tesco if necessary, just Lidl is better for some products. Lidl I don’t find I can get everything but I am very specific on some items

Lidl very good for
instore bakery (the long life bakery products are less good, I favour Tesco there)
coffee
jam/peanut butter
cold meat
butter/spreads
olives
big pots of Greek yoghurt
block chocolate
ice cream
dried fruit
dishwasher products

fruit and veg I find hit and miss at all supermarkets

There is an element of which products you prefer but for some things e.g salami, high fruit content jam, Lidl is much cheaper.

HowAmITheCatsGranny · 28/04/2025 21:10

I like their bakery and their cheeses. The yogurts are good as well. I don’t really rate the fruit and veg. Store cupboard stuff is much of a muchness with other supermarkets.
