That is an increase from.around 70p a few weeks ago. In lidl. Very concerning. Anyone else noticed?

The UK food prices really really aren’t the lowest in the world. Italy, Spain and France are cheaper for a start, especially fruit and veg which is largely fresher, better quality, and with more variety too.

No way is France cheaper than the UK for food. Maybe for peaches in season but not for the weekly shop.

GnomeDePlume · 10/03/2025 07:11

We grow a lot of fruit & veg so tend to be more 'seasonally aware' than most. There is nothing coming off the plot for us.

Look at where the vegetables are coming from and think about the costs involved: growing, harvesting, transporting, storing. Then be amazed at how little you have to pay.

WimbyAce · 10/03/2025 07:25

Cucumber has been 89p for ages, I know as I buy it every week. Same in morrisons.

whirlyhead · 10/03/2025 07:29

I live in Spain and food is definitely not cheaper than the UK! Veggies aren’t that cheap and fish and meat are horrendously expensive. We easily spend €800 a month on food and there’s just 2 of us.

wine is cheap though!

whirlyhead · 10/03/2025 07:31

€1.30 for brocoli. Just checked.

This. I'm laughing my head off at the idea that is expensive. OP you really have no idea what other people in the world are paying, and yes they also have a cost of living problem.

Like where? Incidentally, I just came back from Europe a week ago, visited Paris and Venice, been to supermarkets in both countries. Both cheaper than the UK.

Been in Copenhagen last summer and in Krakow in winter, well Krakow is obviously cheaper, Denmark is expensive when eating out, but supermarket prices are not shocking, pretty much the same as the UK (although it's possible that I was in a budget supermarket, looked similar to Lidl inside)

I'm from another country altogether and back home food is cheaper than the UK too, although prices are similar (EU country)

I certainly don't find UK somehow super cheap, not my experience at all.

GroovyChick87 · 10/03/2025 07:36

I've definitely noticed Lidl's prices going up. I still see the basic items as a lot cheaper than elsewhere but the meat is getting expensive and is more than I'd spend in Asda.

marena1 · 10/03/2025 07:37

Def grow tomatoes, ( I;m not in UK but you do have a summer ) so easy, just buy a raised garden bed, fill it with good potting mix and any handy pony poop or fertiliser around,. Lay the seeds or seedlings in theose cute little trays or just in the ground with a layer of seed raising mix. Put a shelter of mesh to stop cats and birds over the top. Add some sticks for them to grow up. Youwilll have more tomatoes than you know what to do within a couple of months. Fertilise and water regularly. My favourite are Romas and they have never failed me and we have just started autumn here and they are still appearing.

Sinkintotheswamp · 10/03/2025 07:40

Bad harvest last year.
You can buy frozen broccoli instead.

bruffin · 10/03/2025 07:44

€1.30 for brocoli. Just checked.

Today Ocado prices
Brocolli 82p
Cucumber 65p
Tomatoes £1

Never understood the love for Aldi and lidl.Quality is not good and goes off in a couple of days

Hengaoxingrenshini · 10/03/2025 07:45

I wonder if the original post is more about the rate of increase than the price itself. I.e an almost 25% (more than 25%) math isn't my strong suit.

And if you already spend most of your money post rent and bills on food and prices increase a lot then you have a problems rather like when electricity prices spiked.

The price itself being objectively expensive/inexpensive doesn't matter. If you had budgeted at a certain price and then it increases dramatically (as per old price) rather than objectively being expensive.

doodahdayy · 10/03/2025 07:46

@bruffin yes Lidl definitely overrated but
Tends to be a bit cheaper than elsewhere usually. I wouldn't shop there unless there wasn't a store a few mins walk from me

Mirabai · 10/03/2025 07:48

malificent7 · 10/03/2025 06:05

You are right about seasonal eating but brocilli surely is a wibter veg? The hungry gap explains it a bit.

No it’s a summer vegetable.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 10/03/2025 07:50

89p in ASDA for cucumber 79p for broccoli

And the quality of produce is far lower.

I find it madness that people want raspberries in February.
It is extremely sad that people don't understand seasons.

The person refusing a sub for organic strawberries at this time of year...
I just can't

Totally agree. Its the "want it now" consumerism that I find grating.

I might understand wanting out of season fruit now if they tasted nice but it doesn't. My auntie occasionally insists I bring her some raspberries with her shopping and then complains they taste like cardboard 🙄.

It doesn't matter what everyone else is paying if one can't afford certain things for themselves/here.

IBSisBS · 10/03/2025 08:14

International food prices are so unpredictable.

Quite a few years ago (pre Covid) Which named Waitrose the cheapest supermarket for fresh vegetables, Britain had a bumper year for crops but Europe had heatwaves and other issues. Waitrose (not sure if they still) prioritise buying British grown food.

I am lucky to have a few local shops nearby, literally I can walk to them in less than 2 mins. So tend to buy my fresh vegetables daily, slightly more expensive price wise, but zero food waste so overall cheaper, as I tend to not use some of the thing I buy when I add them to the weekly shop.

why anyone posts about this at 2am is beyond my understanding! Aren't you tucked up in bed?

I never shop at lidl but those figures don't seem high compared to other stores.

Cucumber and toms are seasonal and will be imported.

If you don't want to pay 99p for broccoli, buy cabbage or kale- likely to be cheaper.

Jijithecat · 10/03/2025 08:15

Try eating with the seasons. It's cheaper, tastier and better for the environment.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 10/03/2025 08:16

Broccoli is a winter veg, @malificent7 , but tomatoes an cucumber aren't. Winter veg is more affordable.

ThatOtherAustenSister · 10/03/2025 08:18

Cucumber is not one of life's essentials- it's basically water.

If you buy grown in the UK veg you may well find it cheaper.

I always try not to buy as much imported fruit and veg as possible.

The packaging usually shows where it's come from.

You can't be serious surely? 😂

Bestnottalkaboutit · 10/03/2025 08:19

Broccoli has been 99p for 500g in our Lidl (London) for months; I notice because I buy it about three times a week!

DuchessOfNarcissex · 10/03/2025 08:20

WooleyMunky · 10/03/2025 07:53

Not in my experience.
