Social Housing

I am currently on the social housing list. I am a single mother to a four year old and take home pay after tax is £2000 a month. I currently rent a small one bed property privately. I want to bid on a two bed property that is £1000 a month. Will the council pay for this rent if I am successful?

Is this social housing affordable rent?

We are seeing this a lot in our area with new builds. You may see 3 3 beds at social housing rate of £124 a week. But 4 3 beds on the same development at affordable rent rate of £245 a week.

Exact same properties. Just some are in the social housing rate scheme and some are social housing affordable rent.

But the general consensus here is that local housing allowance doesn't apply to social housing so UC would cover the full amount whether it's social rates or affordable rates because it's still social housing.

Where do you live that the housing element maximum benefits for a 2 bed property are £264 a month, yet the housing association rents out a 2 bed property for 1k?

And you get 2k per month take home and then £750 UC on top?

Something is not right in what you're saying about one or many of these things

Yep. All of this

Who you trying to catch out by trying to list their circumstances whilst simultaneously having no idea about it?

FFS - we’d all love it if the council would pay our rent.

I'd love it if they would pay for my rent too

Yeah wouldn't we all! FFS.

I'm amazed you get any benefits on 2k after tax. I had no idea you could get another £750 on top on that kind of salary.

She said the money she receives in UC is towards her childcare.

That's not how UC works.

It may well be that her Max UC, the amount of money the law says she needs to live on, only exceeds their earnings after Work Allowance because of childcare. However if she's told UC she's renting then Max UC should include a Housing Costs Element as well as amounts for living expenses and her kids.

If the amount allowed for rent goes up then UC will increase too.

Area depending - south east - studio flat £500 - one bed flat £600 so sure a 2 bed place could be over a grand via council

where private could be £1500+

Marylou2 · 09/03/2025 08:27

Where's your child's father? Does he contribute to the rent? Or do you just naturally expect taxpayers you don't know to fund your existence?

None of your damn business where the father is.

We have a system to help those whose income doesn't provide a decent lifestyle. Would you rather kids went hungry?

£1000 a month for social housing?! For a 2 bed semi detached? Shock

What area? Most people I know pay no more than £500-£550 a month.

Whaaaaa? 😱 I don't think housing benefit will pay this much tbh.

Yes its almost as if housing associations are private companies who can charge what they like 🙄

Disagree. The primary responsibility for looking after the child should fall to both parents rather than the state. The state should only pick up the slack when there is no viable alternative.

OP unfortunately can't force her ex to pay for his child if he is refusing.

If you're paying £1k in rent £2k don't go very far!!!

There's a reason why cynics like me called Housing Benefit Landlord Benefit.

I'd rather both of the parents who brought the child into this world funded their child, but seemingly that's asking too much.

Yes, in the real world it absolutely is.

GlitteringBall · 10/03/2025 18:13

@Bromptotoo why?

@Bromptotoo why?

Do you remember the fiasco around the Child Support Agency?

A body created specifically to ensure Fathers were forced to pay.

maximalistmaximus · 10/03/2025 21:59

There really has been a shift to the right over the last 15 years.

This isnt how this thread would have gone in 2010.

skintbuthappyish · 10/03/2025 22:16

A lot of poster don't realise that new build social housing is almost, if not the same price as private lets now. The only difference is the tenancy, often they're now only up to 5 years.

My best friend pays £1200 for her 2 bed, the private let across the road pays exactly the same. My friend has a 5 year tenancy and her neighbour is now on a rolling contact

OneTealMentor · 10/03/2025 22:27

I earned much less than the OP as a single parent and I can't have got more than £200 which only covered after school club. I have a mortgage so got zero housing element.
The benefits system makes no sense to me.

It's been a principle of the benefits system for many years that help for mortgages is much less generous than for rent. It's now give as a secured loan although the wait period and some of the restrictions were eased on Johnson's watch.

The political logic I guess is that the state won't help fund an appreciating asset.

Entitled to is a useful site for figuring out how much help you can get in your particular circumstances. It’s also handy for working out your finances due to changes - ie if you want to change jobs, when children leave education etc. It is area specific so that it automatically works out housing entitlements and council tax for your own area.

When I was in Glasgow the homes were £1000+ in rent
