Could you turn 4 servings into 6 servings

You make fish pie with 500g of fish in a cheese sauce with garden peas, spinach and onion, topped with lots of mash in a casserole dish. This would ordinarily serve 4. Do you reckon you could get 6 or 7 servings out of it if you added a handful of broccoli per portion.

Yes of course! You can also pack in a lot of other cheap vegetable to bulk it out even more.

Wherehavetheyallgone · 14/02/2025 21:12

Yes, try finely shredded leeks or sweetcorn too. Or add them as veg on the side. Green beans also good as a side veg.

zzplec · 14/02/2025 21:16

Peas and beans are a source of protein, so I'd increase them to help make up for the smaller portions of fish.

LIZS · 14/02/2025 21:17

3 Boiled eggs halved, more veg

Okayornot · 14/02/2025 21:18

Don't forget to put a couple of chopped eggs in the sauce for the fish as well.

TourangaLeila · 14/02/2025 21:18

Yes, double the potato topping and add a bag of frozen mixed veg as a side.

user1471538275 · 14/02/2025 21:19

No I don't think you can get nearly double the portions out of it if you turn it into fish and vegetable pie with broccoli on the side. Especially if you're talking about adults.

Who has turned up unexpectedly? Can they go home for dinner?

AdaColeman · 14/02/2025 21:19

You could add some halved hard boiled eggs to the fish mix to make it go further.

soupyspoon · 14/02/2025 21:20

Can you mix white beans in with the fish mixture and serve with lots of veg, piles of green beans, broccoli, and add boiled eggs on top

PurBal · 14/02/2025 21:21

I'd add pasta and make extra white sauce, voila "fish pie pasta"

LeavesOnTrees · 14/02/2025 21:27

Go French and serve with baguette (or any other bread).

I don’t want to double carb

I have never tried adding eggs. I will try that but I’m not sure if it sounds nice.

Maybe make the mash with fat milk or similar so it will be heavier and more filling

soupyspoon · 14/02/2025 21:39

Eggs are traditionally in a fish pie

minipie · 14/02/2025 21:40

Hard boiled egg is a classic in fish pie - it sounds weird but it’s nice I promise!

JaninaDuszejko · 14/02/2025 21:40

Egg is gorgeous in fish pie and a completely standard part of the recipe.

I didn’t know

More mash, extra cheese on top and fill the plate with veg. If you're trying to stretch it to be more frugal than you need to make sure it's still filling or else people will want to snack.

Boope · 14/02/2025 21:45

500g is quite a lot of fish for 4 so I reckon 6 smaller portions with sides of kale or other green veg.
Always have boiled eggs in fish pie but that adds more to cost.

DiscoBeat · 14/02/2025 21:45

It depends who it's for. We have two bottomless older teen boys so I always cook for 6.

Ineffable23 · 14/02/2025 21:49

I'm not convinced you can just add beans to a fish pie. I think you'd be better off adding more peas and potentially the eggs to the pie itself, and serving with a good selection of mixed vegetables (including e.g. frozen green beans if you want some beans). Then I would shrug and live with the fact I was going to be double caring if I wanted to stretch the fish that much.

Or do a vegetable soup and bread and butter as a starter, so a smaller main course feels intentional? A vegetable soup could be done with frozen veg or yellow sticker stuff, or things from Olio and anything going funny in the fridge plus a stock cube so might not add too much cost?

Its 125g per person, thats a very small portion

Rocknrollstar · 14/02/2025 22:02

Why not just serve it with garlic bread? Years ago people served almost every meal with bread and butter to make the expensive food go further.
