Could you turn 4 servings into 6 servings

You make fish pie with 500g of fish in a cheese sauce with garden peas, spinach and onion, topped with lots of mash in a casserole dish. This would ordinarily serve 4. Do you reckon you could get 6 or 7 servings out of it if you added a handful of broccoli per portion.

500g is quite a lot of fish for 4 so I reckon 6 smaller portions with sides of kale or other green veg.
Always have boiled eggs in fish pie but that adds more to cost.

It’s really not, it’s a small portion, a portion should be 140 grams.so making it for 7 folks would be 70 grams and very small half portion.

HScully · 14/02/2025 22:08

Extra potatoes, carrots and sweetcorn, serve with the broccoli

I have never tried adding eggs. I will try that but I’m not sure if it sounds nice.

We always add eggs to fish pie, nothing to do with cost, just find it goes really well together

easylemonsqueezy · 14/02/2025 22:09

My two kids would eat that between them
With a pile of veg

Londonmummy66 · 14/02/2025 22:20

Add shredded leeks (a lot of them) to the fish pie and shredded cabbage and carrots to the mash.

Add beans (pulses) or lentils.

They are not the answer to everything. Delicious but would ruin a fish pie.

3 Boiled eggs halved, more veg

Serve each portion with a good dollop of baked beans. As per Jamie...

I always put quartered eggs in, not trying to stretch the portions - it adds interest to the texture. Secret is to not overcook them first.

Perseimmion · 14/02/2025 23:12

For me, eggs are a massive NO in fish pie. I would add some diced carrots and sweetcorn, increase the mash, top with plenty of grated cheese and serve with peas, green beans and broccoli.

I didn’t say they are the answer to everything, did I? However, if the op is genuinely trying to make her pie more filling, they could be a good option. I add green lentil to shepherds pie which works very well. I imagine cannellini beans could work well in a fish pie along with egg as many others have suggested.

I don’t want to double carb

But it's only a half portion of carbs...?

Pinkdreams · 14/02/2025 23:44

Yes and if you add some veg as a side it will fill the plate more

ChonkyRabbit · 14/02/2025 23:46

No, a handful of broccoli wouldn't make up for the reduction.

Ang3leyes · 14/02/2025 23:50

soupyspoon · 14/02/2025 21:56

Its 125g per person, thats a very small portion

Yes you’re right. I’ve decided not to stretch the fish, it’s ridiculous. I’ll just keep it to four portions with broccoli on the side, adding eggs. I hope this thread helps someone

I would add some sides eg chips, other veg to increase the size of the meal so that people had a smaller portion of the fish pie. I wouldn't put eggs in, that sounds horrible.

Divebar2021 · 14/02/2025 23:58

Im really surprised that people haven’t had eggs in fish pie - it’s traditionally served like that and completely delicious. It doesn’t particularly stand out as a flavour among the sauce.

I know right! It's so normal.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/02/2025 00:08

I’ve just seen this come up in active, but my mum always put eggs in fish pie, I thought that was normal? (My DP is allergic to fish so we never have it.)

Delphiniumandlupins · 15/02/2025 00:46

I would add prawns if you don't already include them. I've never had boiled eggs in fish pie but will try that next week.

It really isn't quite a lot. A portion would be around 125 - 150g of fish per person.

Agree, what's the mumsnet obsession with adding lentils to everything.

Boiled eggs are very common in fish pie.

Fifiworks · 15/02/2025 01:11

Boiled Eggs in a fish pie are great. If I had to add extra people last minute I would also go with the garlic bread option. It allows everyone to fill up, you don’t have to eat it yourself. Use the bake at home baguettes and make your own garlic butter and it’s not too unhealthy.
