What time is your heating going on if you usually

just put it on in the evenings?

We live in a drafty 1930s build semi (made of stone - so no wall cavity insulation) and usually put heating on for evening around 4.30 or 5 and 'tough' it out during the day...

However it's bleddy freezing - might have to stump up for January and just pay an extra whatever .

Most of the time it's on timer, 7-8am and then 5-7pm. This week however it's been freezing, so we've had it on more, usually goes on as soon as we get up (maybe 6.30), as as soon as we get home from school run (4.00). Don't tend to use it during the day as everyone else is at school/work, and I'm in bed after a night shift, but if we were in/up and cold, I'd turn it on.

OurDreamLife · 09/01/2025 07:22

Ours is on first thing in the morning and back on after school.

I think it’s essential first thing. The temperature drops so much over night.

blendingstruggles · 09/01/2025 07:26

Mine is left on constantly at 16. If we feel cold then we boost it to 18 for a few hours.

Summervibes24 · 09/01/2025 07:34

We don't have it on in the weekday mornings as we don't need it. OH and eldest DD up and out by 7am. Youngest DD has 30mins and snuggles under a blanket whilst I have a hot water bottle. It comes on at 4pm as the house is really cold by then.

Is there a room in the house that is a bit warmer? Our tv room is warmer (internal walls) so DD and I tend to sit there,, have breakfast and watch breakfast news in the mornings and not the kitchen as that is colder.

Just put it on. This is the coldest snap we'll have this year. Mine comes on at 3 30

5am-7am and 5pm-7pm. 2 very young kids, one a baby. My gas bill is depressing.

Good point

@RedHelenB also good point.

I think I'll put it on today - pretend it's Christmas for one day.

@coldscottishmum that's hard with little ones - you definitely need it on. All adults in this house, but I guess no one likes being uncomfortable. Note - we do wear multiple layers/oodies etc too.

Weekdays I don't put it on until 4pm, I WFH but won't heat the house just for me when I'm working in one room of the house. It doesn't get too cold though, new build. When people are home we usually put it on about 9 am and 3pm for 2 hours each time, to 21C.

klopteaklrd · 09/01/2025 07:52

And despite doing that half of December and living in a 4 bed detached we only spent £60 on gas for the whole month.

Jingleballs2 · 09/01/2025 07:53

It's on 17.5 overnight. Turn it up to about 20 when we wake up and stays on all day as we are generally home. Back to 17.5 when we go to bed around 11

Paradoes · 09/01/2025 07:53

We don’t put it on until about 4.30 or 5 but when we are off or the weekend I probably put it on from 11-2 and then evenings (we have a stove so that is usually on the night before so it never is too cold in the morning as it’s a huge fire

Sorry didn't read properly 🙈

I left mine on last night for the first time. The thermostat was on 10 but the heating wasn’t on this morning.

Wowzers! Our bill will be a heck of a lot more than that.

Maybe I need to bubblewrap the house - or get a different one. We've been here 16 years though and love the garden - so maybe not.

Ours is on a thermostat, it’s currently -4 outside so we changed the thermostat and it came on in the night. Which is very rare for us.

We are retired though in our fifties so at home more. I grew up in a house with just a gas fire in one room and single glazed windows I would give up every other thing for heating if I had to. I assist at a warm spaces food project that’s open today I expect us to be very busy as it’s so cold here.

hattie43 · 09/01/2025 08:07

Mine has been on 24 hrs a day in this cold . I can put up with a lot but being cold isn't one of them .

Bromptotoo · 09/01/2025 08:10

DP is retired and I WFH for 24 hours a week.

Heat comes on about 06:00 but goes off at 9:00 until 17:00 but with a boost around midday.

Works fine most of the time but it's been on all day during the cold snap.

Off all night though.

I've built up a load of credit with last mild winters so I'm not going to worry about the cost now.

BobnLen · 09/01/2025 08:14

All day, set at 19c, and it comes on at night too a bit as that is set at 15c, we usually have it at 18 in the day and 20 in the evening but find the constant 19 better at the moment

midgetastic · 09/01/2025 08:16

You say the house is drafty

That can be sorted - big heavy curtains across windows and doorways, sausage dogs across doors , cling film like stuff across the windows ?

LikeABat · 09/01/2025 08:28

On all day as long as someone is home which is most days at the moment. Honestly makes little difference cost wise whether it is on all day or just first thing and after school as maintaining is cheaper than increasing the temperature. Similar age house but brick cavity walls.we don't have it too hot so still wear warm clothes and have sofa blankets.

9outof10cats · 09/01/2025 08:28

On days I go to work I leave heating off until about 3 pm, then turn it on remotely so it's warm for when I get home. I set it to 16 overnight, but it doesn't usually come on unless it's very cold.

My starting point is 18 degrees for the whole house, but 19-20 for the room I am using. Luckily I run hot so around 19/19.5 is perfect for me.

I installed TRV's last year to allow me to adjust the temperature in individual rooms. Best thing I did as my heating bills have come down significantly.

ThirdStorm · 09/01/2025 08:39

I'm fortunate to have an energy rating of A on my home so my thermostat is at 18c. Heating on at 1730-2030 and weekends I generally boost it at lunch time in this cold weather for an hour or two and I'm pretty comfortable. Last month my gas was about £45 (4 bed detached).

Puppupandaway · 09/01/2025 08:53

Ours comes on 6am-7am, then 11.30-1pm, then 4-7pm.

I used to brave it out in the day and try to just do mornings and after school, but I found it was a false economy. The house was so cold by the afternoon it took much longer to heat it up later. So now it's on more regularly but switches off once it gets to 20 degrees.

Being in a warm house is a non negotiable for me. Our gas bill for December was £75 so I think that's a good price for how much we use our heating. 3 bed semi with four people.

Iliketulips · 09/01/2025 09:00

When times were harder it'd be on around 7am-8.30am, then 3.30-7.30, ie when DD was in the house. Things are easier now and one of us is pretty much around all the time, so put it on when we get up 6.45-7.30pm and to be honest we've left it running the last couple of days at 18c, house normally goes down to 16.5c before it clicks on again. Paying £135pm (just reduced though) has built up a large credit of £700, so we have the luxury of dipping into that.
