What time is your heating going on if you usually

just put it on in the evenings?

We live in a drafty 1930s build semi (made of stone - so no wall cavity insulation) and usually put heating on for evening around 4.30 or 5 and 'tough' it out during the day...

However it's bleddy freezing - might have to stump up for January and just pay an extra whatever .

Mine is on a thermostat. I turn it down to 10 at night and up to 16-20 throughout day and the evening depending on whether I'm sitting or moving around.

I always thought it was better to keep the house gently heated rather than the heating go on and off? Isn't it more expensive/harder to heat the house if the boiler is starting from off/cold?

I overpay throughout the spring and summer so the winter bill should hopefully not be too harsh.

I think that's a myth that's been debunked, though I suspect it makes a difference as to how well insulated the house is.

HamAndMustardSandwich · 09/01/2025 09:37

We have it on as and when it’s needed tbh. Wouldn’t let it fall below 18 degrees. Normally have it around 21-22 degrees. No way am I going to be chilly 🥶 😂

LikeABat · 09/01/2025 09:42

@klopteaklrd I agree with @JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn . For us it seems much better to keep a steady temperature all day than fluctuating. Our 7 year old boiler works much more efficiently when maintaining temperature than when trying to increase the temperature. But it will definitely be different for everyone depending on their boiler, heating controls and insulation.

I'm off work for january( work in tourist Industry we shut down for a month). Its freezing here mines on all day, we had some credit, l expect we in debit now but I'm not going to be cold. But we are lucky that we can afford it, kids all grown and small flat to heat.

LittleRedRidingHoody · 09/01/2025 09:56

All day every day here, for all of winter/autumn/spring and sometimes parts of summer - DM is terminally ill and does not do well with the cold 😬 I've come to terms with our gas bill being through the roof for a few years.

Ilovemyshed · 09/01/2025 10:27

Comes in at 5 am through to 7.30 ish but isn't on all the time as the stat is at 21 and it reaches that very quickly. House stays warm all day, although the back of the kitchen might kick the underfloor on around early afternoon if the inside temp drops below the stat (set to 19). Rads come back on about 4-7 pm - again, not on all the time, and house is cosy all night.

Bjorkdidit · 09/01/2025 11:15

There's no point comparing your situation with others. It sounds like your house is poorly insulated. It might also be larger than many others and have a different heating system/controls - do you have a thermostat and where is it in the house - living room or drafty hallway. If not, are you manually turning the heating on and off? All makes a difference.

People also have different tolerances for cold - one person's bleddy freezing is the next person's 'bearable' likewise ability or willingness to pay for extra heating. Some people will struggle to pay an extra £50 to keep warm, others will comfortably suck up an extra £200.

Itiswhatitis80 · 09/01/2025 11:20

All the time at the moment,it’s too bloody cold.

leafybrew · 09/01/2025 15:35

@Bjorkdidit

cheers for that. A sound explanation indeed.

Also that’s me told. I won’t learn from it though. I will start other pointless threads. It’s called ‘chatting’ or maybe’comparing notes’. If you don’t like it - don’t join in.

and my house is poorly insulated and we don’t have loads a money. Sucks to be me😀

We have it on from 7-8.30 and 4.30-5.30 but I've had it on 1-2 hours extra the last few days as it's so chilly.

wintersgold · 09/01/2025 17:05

Its always on 21/22 - I can't deal with the cold at the best of times, let alone in my own home

5am-7am and 5pm-7pm. 2 very young kids, one a baby. My gas bill is depressing.

You'd hate mine. I've got a toddler who refuses blankets or fleecy pyjamas so mines on 6pm-6am🫣

PrioritisePleasure24 · 11/01/2025 13:55

It’s been on all day this week till about 8/9, we’ve plenty credit ( pay £130) a month and bills can be much lower in spring/summer so we let it build. Then take out excess in spring. We heat to around 18. Don’t heat overnight. Partner wfh and heating normally 4/5 hours in the winter apart from cold snaps like this.

We did the frugal minimal heat one year and it was shite. No thank you. We have blankets, slippers, thermal curtains etc but the air can still be cold around you.

Tumbleweed101 · 15/01/2025 09:38

I’ve left it on all through the cold snap. It was on about 17/18C over night and when out at work and 20C when home. It stopped the massive fluctuations and I think probably used less overall as boiler only comes on when thermostat detects it’s under that set temp.

Generally through winter I’ll have it in 20C when home and 15C overnight or when at work. Obviously turn it down if warm enough when home.

I had a few years when I was really struggling for money and heating the house so it is nice to be able to keep it comfortable now.

sansou · 15/01/2025 17:17
