I got caught shoplifting

1000 replies

RoseBiscuitll · 09/09/2024 15:02

I really didn't know what topic to choose for this

I'm mortified, I got caught shoplifting in boots today, I was stealing baby milk and a facial moisturiser. I'm so ashamed of myself. It was in the city center aswell. They didn't call police but they took my details, took a picture and told me I can't return to the store again

Will this picture and my details go around to the other shops near by or will it just go to the other boots shops.

I can't believe I was stupid enough to do this! I'm so embarrassed and also feel really guiltily!

This has been a pleasure. Truly. But it's getting late now and I have to be up sharp as I'm planning on doing a trolley run at 8am. Good night and God bless

m00ngirl · 09/09/2024 23:14

@RoseBiscuitll It's relevant to an area of law I work on and I can 100% assure you that Boots is not using facial recognition. Security guards say all sorts of things and are often misinformed themselves. They would have to have a sign at the door informing customers if they did start using facial recognition. Boots is also not sharing photos with other stores to use for facial recognition - this would have legal consequences for them and again they would have to declare this publicly.

I'd rather be a thief than a cruel person with no empathy.

There but for the grace of god.

Well I can't empathise with a thief as I've never been one. I might have sympathised had she showed an atom of remorse, rather than just embarrassment that it might curtail further shopping trips. I'd rather have a moral compass.

Actions yes.

Nothing wrong with my "attitude"

I think buying expensive new baby things but saying you couldn’t have done any different shows an attitude problem.

You got 'empathy' and 'sympathy' mixed up but ok.

I read online boots and quite a number of big retailers do use facial recognition
I dont know I'm just nervous now to ever go into town again

I disagree

That’s my point, you can’t join the dots that you didn’t need to spend £120 on the new cot and if you hadn’t then you would have had more money for food and baby milk.

I really didn't. Empathy is putting yourself in the other's position and understanding that, sympathy is feeling pity etc for them.

The cot is an investment.

It turns into a single bed

So will see her threw until she is a 5-6 year old child

I think it was well worth the money.

RoyallyEFFEDOFF · 09/09/2024 23:22

A cot is an absolute necessity. Having seen some of the absolute shit advertised on Facebook marketplace I wouldn’t be keen on buying my babies bed from there either. Also, without transport how can you get the item? Not every seller on there will deliver, especially if the item is a while away.

Unfortunately it's very "cool" and "current" to empathise with perpetrators.

Meanwhile, on other historic threads, nurse forgets to renew her pin and must grovel to the governing body how ashamed she is. A mother brushes her daughter's hair rather too hard when she's acting up, and she must report herself to social services for being a child abuser (true previous examples)

But, if you've commited a crime, we must analyse you, wonder how we've failed you as a society and find every excuse under the sun for you that doesn't involve you taking any responsibility.

Women steals in the heat of the moment, for whatever reason, regrets it when caught. Silly thing to do, learn a lesson and don't do it again. Nothing more to it. All the other posters making this into some big episode akin to a TV 'aid' appeal are only more likely to make the op feel In the 'victim' mentality and justified in her mistake, hence perhaps more likely to do it again. Madness.

Come on, hand on heart... how badly did you wanna say "naiveté" again ?

I don't regret stealing when I was desperate either.

As much as those times were hard, at least I'm not hard inside now. I don't look down on other people who are struggling, because I know what it's like. I couldn't imagine posting such vicious bile at someone in difficult circumstances.

Looking around a bright busy shop full of things you need when you have barely anything can be overwhelmingly emotional. Sometimes you do just grab something and hope you get away with taking it.

It's nice for you that you don't understand that impulse but perhaps it isn't good for you to be so spoilt as you clearly feel an unwarranted superiority.

It sounds like you made the right decision to me. Sometimes you do need to make 'big' purchases and put yourself in penury for a while. It's not like you'd have any more money next month, is it?

Probably things you WANT rather than things you NEED?

I’ve been in the position of having no money and no place to stay so I got a job cleaning the toilets in a youth hostel in return for bed and board. I didn’t go out and steal.

If only there were such things as food banks…
