Crumpetdisappointment · 21/07/2024 10:23

i have gone off broccoli - i quite like it in a stir fry but a whole head is too much for 2 people
and do tend to buy currently asparagus/tenderstem broccoli

i did go through a phrase of kale but this is in bags

so all the above is currently expensive

i do buy leeks and carrots but for the colour what else is a good buy?

I buy lots of frozen veg to keep the variety up without having waste.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/07/2024 10:33

I can't imagine a head of broccoli lasting more than 2 meals in this house! Frozen veg is a really good shout.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/07/2024 10:38

i have frozen peas and frozen sweet corn and also spinach
perhaps i should buy frozen green beans, although i tend to find them a bit watery

OP posts:
mylittleitalianhome · 21/07/2024 10:38

I try to buy seasonally, so beans, lettuce, peppers, courgettes, aubergines and tomatoes in the summer. In the spring, tons of asparagus; autumn, pumpkins and squashes, and the winter, leeks, root vegetables, broccoli etc.

edited to add that I agree frozen veg is a really great shout though! Morrisons do roasted Mediterranean veg and they’re to die for…perfect for a pasta sauce in a pinch .

shuffleofftobuffalo · 21/07/2024 10:39

Green beans, spring greens, tenderstem broccoli, peppers, spinach, butternut squash currently in my fridge. Frozen veg I've got peas, sweetcorn and spinach - personally I find other frozen very a bit mushy for my liking.

With your green veg repackage them when you get home - I use ikea reusable airtight bags, it really does make the veg last longer. I've had some spring greens in my fridge for 3 weeks now good as new because they're in airtight bags.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/07/2024 10:40

that sounds good @shuffleofftobuffalo

i was reading a thread that people were criticising the asparagus and of course it is expensive

cauliflower - like broccoli but cream coloured
Savoy cabbage - nicer than regular cabbage
fennel bulbs - occasionally; pre-cook then sauté and sprinkle with Parmesan as per Delia
pak choi - occasionally; never as good as takeaway

in bags:
cavolo nero - better in winter
manges tous
dwarf beans (haricots)
spinach - throw a handful into the pan with every omelet
frozen peas - DCs eat these frequently

asparagus - only when British is in season b/c it tastes so much better and asparagus farming in Peru is criminal for a range of reasons

I used to buy courgettes - no plastic bag, keep will in fridge, quick and easy to steam but after a holiday in Italy, eating them every day for 2 weeks, I only eat them when they are served to me.

Marshmallowbrain · 21/07/2024 10:46

In general I buy:
Broccoli - luckily both kids like this.
Baby sweetcorn, mange tout and add broccli to make stir fry veg
Onions, courgettes, peppers - I usually roast a load up and put on salads or mix in cous cous
Potatos - I'm trying really hard to use fresh pots rather than oven chips and I bloody love a roastie. Also like putting them in the oven with lashings of garlic powder.
Salad/toms/peppers/spring onions- we eat a lot in the summer
If I'm making a curry I'll usually add in peppers, tomato's, potato Cauli (I'll roast left overs and add to the roast veg mix above)- if I'm making a Thai curry I'll put in baby corn and mange tout.

I try and plan my meals and shopping so I can use the same veggies and try and not waste.

DinnaeFashYersel · 21/07/2024 10:48

Tons of frozen veg. Stops me wasting it it. Currently have these in the freezer.

Broccoli
Cauliflower
Green beans
Peas
Brussels sprouts
Onion
Sweet potato

SquigglePigs · 21/07/2024 10:49

Carrots, green beans, broccoli, courgette, mushrooms and peppers are the staples in our house. Along with corn on the cob on the BBQ.

We also have peas and sweetcorn in the freezer. Great for when DD is having a quick tea or to bulk out a meal.

We love cabbage and other greens in the winter with stews and things but tend to have it less in the summer.

Other stuff gets rotated in as and when it's on offer, we fancy a change, or a specific recipe calls for it. Always get a cauliflower when we're making a veggie curry as it goes very well. I don't like eating it any other way but DH and DD will finish it off.

Startingagainandagain · 21/07/2024 10:54

I am vegetarian and I get:
-broccoli
-carrots
-courgettes
-peppers
-kale
-aubergine
-cauliflower
-sweet potatoes
-garlic and onions
-mushrooms
-tomatoes
-turnips
-spring onions

I also grow my own spinach, beetroots, tomatoes and cooking herbs (basil, oregano, mint, rosemary...)

Inspireme2 · 21/07/2024 10:55

I had a food box with a recipe including lemon juice to go over brocolli it made it really nice and I think some seeds.

mynameiscalypso · 21/07/2024 10:55

We always have chopped onions, soffrito and chopped peppers in the freezer. They're fine to use as a base for sauces and the peppers work okay in stir fries/fajitas etc although they're a bit mushier than fresh. We also have frozen peas/beans.

I normally have broccoli and cauliflower in the fridge as well as salad bits.

Orangesandlemons77 · 21/07/2024 10:55

Most of the above, also children like carrots..

Butternut quash and red pepper good in a curry.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/07/2024 10:56

i did see a recipe with spinach with a squeeze of lemon over it
which was tasty
so might try the broccoli again with the added lemon juice

Every week -
Broccoli
Carrots
Tomatoes
Cucumber
Peppers
Onion
Salad leaves if some kind
Mushrooms

Always have in frozen spinach, peas, butternut squash chunks and tinned sweetcorn.

The rest depends what we’re planning on cooking/ eating that week, often use courgettes, leeks, sometimes do a cabbage and white bean soup, pick up sugar snap peas when I see some nice looking ones - never green beans as I just don’t like them. DD loves corn on the cob so might get a few of those - the frozen ones aren’t great though. Love asparagus too but didn’t really get it much this year. Cauliflower only if I’m going to do it with cheese really. Went through a phase of eating lots of sweet potato but have sickened ourselves on that a bit. Love aubergine but am incapable of cooking it nicely so don’t bother with that.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/07/2024 10:59

i like to roast aubergine and add it to dhal.
like above, only really have cauliflower with a cheese sauce but really should do a curry as it is really good in a curry

I love sugar snap peas or mange tout. Often have them as a green veg accompaniment with meat and potato type meals! Also use them in stir fries.

thehappyotter · 21/07/2024 11:04

i grow all my own . we tend to eat seasonally because of this .
at the moment its beans beetroot raspberries, strawberries have finished .
we always have potatoes garlic and onions .
we are about to pick the apple tree so they get eaten next
we do buy peppers and bannans as its too cold .
we can,dry and store what we can but i look what i have and look for recipes on that . also the leaves off many of the plants are edible .
we grow salad all year round

DilkushaKitchen · 21/07/2024 11:05

This week my veg box came with

  • Kohlrabi
  • Potatoes
  • Onions
  • Bunched carrots
  • Summer greens
  • Spinach
  • Little gem lettuce
  • Mixed salad leaves
  • Chestnut mushrooms
  • Padron peppers

I had some multi coloured peppers leftover from last week and some fennel and a courgette. I bought spring onions, a cucumber, some cherry tomatoes and lamb's lettuce.

Pleaseleavemealone0 · 21/07/2024 11:09

I'm on a tight budget an mainly use frozen I usually rotate between cauliflower/brocoli, carrots, peas, sweetcorn, peppers and green beans.
Then fresh peppers, onions, and any special offer veg.

LegoHouse274 · 21/07/2024 11:17

I cook different things all the time tbh so it massively varies! I don't really buy the same stuff often, other than the bare basics which for us are: carrots, onions (white and red, we mix it up), lettuce (change variety often), cucumber, every colour bell pepper, and spring onions.

Otherwise we use a mixture of:

  • Broccoli
  • Green beans
  • Sugar snaps
  • Mange tout
  • Aubergine (but neither of the kids will eat it)
  • Courgette
Are the main ones. Occasionally butternut squash, asparagus (but neither of the kids will eat it)
  • Mini corn on the cobs - but I'm finding these have suddenly become difficult to find?
  • Spinach (but the kids also won't eat this)

Frozen we have:

  • Mixed frozen veg packs which tend to be some combination of broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, peas, sweetcorn, red pepper.
  • Peas
  • Edamame beans

We often use tinned sweetcorn too.

SeeSeeRider · 21/07/2024 11:24

Broccoli keeps in the fridge - as a green veg on Sunday, in veg curry on Monday, with pasta on Tuesday. It helps if you really like it, as we do. Also carrots, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, courgettes, red, green, and yellow peppers, spring onions, tomatoes, chicory, leeks (this week, yum!). Broccoli is one of our changing 'green veg' choices, could be cauliflower, white cabbage (love it with gravy!), Savoy cabbage, Sweetheart cabbage, Cavolo Nero, rainbow chard, etc. Also frozen peas, peas & edamame beans, or broad beans.

I agree, Morrisons frozen vegetables seem to always be nice and a lot for your money.
