Crumpetdisappointment · 21/07/2024 10:23

i have gone off broccoli - i quite like it in a stir fry but a whole head is too much for 2 people
and do tend to buy currently asparagus/tenderstem broccoli

i did go through a phrase of kale but this is in bags

so all the above is currently expensive

i do buy leeks and carrots but for the colour what else is a good buy?

Fresh carrots and cauliflower and frozen peas and mixed vegetables.

caringcarer · 21/07/2024 11:38

Pressed to soon. I also buy fresh peppers, aubergine, courgettes and onions. Also swede in season and Sprouts around Xmas and NY.

longdistanceclaraclara · 21/07/2024 11:54

I try to buy what's in season.

BobandRobertaSmith · 21/07/2024 12:06

If you find it hard to get through a whole head of broccoli, anything with a stem will keep longer if you stand it in a pot with a few mm of water (like flowers) eg broccoli, lettuce (but keep the leaves out of the water), asparagus, herbs, spring onions (just the roots) etc You can stick spring onions in the ground/a pot to keep them fresh and they keep growing! Keeping things in air tight bags will keep things fresher. Those special Sistema boxes for fruit and veg keep things fresher longer too and are better than bags at preventing mould. If you have leftover veg because the pack is too big, freeze it before it goes off. You can also perk up veg that is starting to go soft or limp by putting it in cold water in the fridge.

Not quite what you asked but it saves food waste and money.

As a true patriot I buy nothing but turnips. I make turnip pie, turnip pasta, turnip in the hole and am working on fashioning my next child from turnips - added bonus is that this will avoid any difficulties with the benefits cap.

Crumpetdisappointment · 21/07/2024 12:11

thank you @BobandRobertaSmith
i was really asking because i was looking for a green veg, other than broccoli and tender stem broccoli

A head of broccoli lasts one meal between two of us! At the moment I’m loving roasted cauliflower, I just roast two at the weekend and eat them over the week. We also get carrots, peppers, salad veg, bok choy and mushrooms most weeks. Usually alternate kale, cavolo nero and savoy cabbage. And then we have frozen chopped spinach (so easy to put in everything!) and peas. If you’re looking for what’s cheap though then whatever is in the Aldi/lidl weekly special is usually a good shout, and cabbage.

Comedycook · 21/07/2024 12:16

Frozen green beans are really good value for money...I think, unlike broccoli, the freezing process doesn't negatively affect the texture

muddyford · 21/07/2024 12:19

I keep my veg in green Stayfresh bags in the fridge. Bought mine from Lakeland. Wash between uses and they go on for years.

Gemstonebeach · 21/07/2024 12:26

Not a big fan of frozen veg except peas, corn and endamame beans. I do like frozen cauliflower and Broccolli rice though!

I would say we eat pretty seasonally. Big fan of a stir fry with bok choy, mushrooms, carrots and capsicum. Steamed green beans and broccoli. Love a salad but my kids will only eat a deconstructed salad with no lettuce! Eat a lot of tinned tomatoes and different types of tinned beans. Love cauliflower, parsnip, pumpkin - recently discovered spaghetti squash!

We grow a lot of spinach and kale.

BobandRobertaSmith · 21/07/2024 12:40

If you like broccoli (usually), Brussel sprouts, cauliflower, Savoy cabbage, kohl rabi, kale, green cabbage and collard greens are all actually the same species so maybe try those as alternatives? I love roasted cauliflower or Savoy cabbage or courgettes.
Frozen baby broad beans are good value and tasty. French beans are fantastic sautéed with lemon and garlic butter, topped with chopped nuts or pine nuts.

Nellieinthebarn · 21/07/2024 13:19

I buy in season because its cheaper, and the easy way to do this, in Aldi anyway is to look out for veg in union flag packaging, if its not packaged it says on the shelf label where its from.

So lately I have bought tenderstem broccoli, carrots, spuds, tomatoes, lettuce, courgettes, spring onions, runner beans and cauliflower. Fruit is strawberries and plums. I also get some frozen veg, and fruit. The only imported thing from the fruit and veg section was some apples and bananas. I would buy asparagus if I didn't hate it.

MrsBobtonTrent · 21/07/2024 15:32

We grow veg and try to always have at least two vegetable ready to pick plus fruit over the summer months. But I buy cabbage and try to get interesting ones for variety. I count kale/greens as cabbages. Frozen peas, endamame and spinach blocks. We prefer tinned sweetcorn to frozen. We freeze excess beans (runners and green beans) but buy frozen green beans when we are out of stock. Love fresh broad beans, but not frozen, so preserve excess as a puree in jars - same goes for aubergine. Dried borlotti when we have excess. We like sugar snaps (home or shop), corn cobs when there is a good deal. Grow interesting carrots, then buy normal ones out of season. Buy brocolli most weeks - the stem is great in a stir fry or soup. We have our own bean sprouts and mushrooms. I always try to have onions, leeks, carrots and garlic on hand - home or shop depending on yield/time of year. Salad stuff (including toms and raddish) from home. Anything else bought if there is a specific purpose.

Even if you don't have space/time for a garden, I've always found it worthwhile buying bargains and preserving at home. Bought a massive pile of very reduced strawberries last week for pennies and made jam, coulis and frozen puree for future use.

Nellieinthebarn · 21/07/2024 15:38

Oh, that's just reminded me, any fruit that's going a bit beyond gets chopped up and frozen to be made into mixed fruit smoothies.

Starlight40 · 21/07/2024 17:07

We buy carrots, parsnips, broccoli, green beans, swede, onions, spring onions, peppers, potatoes. Frozen veg I buy peas and sweetcorn.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 21/07/2024 18:10

carrots are a good staple in this house, we also buy broccoli and potatoes regularly. We get sweet peppers and lettuce once a week as part of one of our more expensive meals (tacos) but theres usually enough to last into another meal, pasta bake or something. Waitrose and Uber Eats do a half price veggies on Mondays deal so I tend to buy quite a lot of fruit and veg for the week on that deal. We like green beans, leeks, cabbage in a stir-fry and really whatever else we can buy in cheaply. We get various tinned veggies from the pantry every week (like a food bank but you give them a fiver a week) plus some fresh bits but that depends what they have. I am more likely to reach for sweetcorn, sweet peas and carrots in tins than anything else.

MissTrip82 · 22/07/2024 12:24

We got a book ages ago that lists seasonal fruit and vegetables and we use that. Makes it much cheaper.

A head of broccoli would certainly not serve more than two here though.

rainbowunicorn · 22/07/2024 17:19

Pak choi
Courgette
Spring onion
Radish
Cabbage
Sweet potato
Potato
Baby corn
Aubergine
Cauliflower
Beetroot
Celery

Really just peas and swede because I hate chopping swede

BuzzKiller · 22/07/2024 17:25

I’ve got 2 dc (and dh and I)

we always have in the freezer:

frozen value mixed veg
frozen peas
frozen sweetcorn
frozen green beans (delicious cooked in the oven!)
frozen broccoli (again don’t like it boiled but we cook it in the oven)
frozen spinach

fresh:
cucumber
round lettuce
big value pack of peppers (dc eat them like apples)
cabbage (savoy/spring greens- whatever is cheaper)
carrots

then more occasionally (because they tend to be more expensive) we buy:
courgette
broccoli
cauliflower
leeks

LegendInMyOwnLunchtime · 22/07/2024 17:33

Red Cabbage.

It makes great slaw, finely shredded with carrots and a dressing of lime, ginger, salt, sesame oil . The colour is fab and a red cabbage lasts ages like this.

Also good as spiced red cabbage in winter

WitchyBits · 22/07/2024 17:38

I buy carrot, cherry and onions and blitz them through my food processor and then put the mix into those silicone muffin trays and fill them with oil and freeze for ease of use. Perfect base for 99% of sauce based this like chili/bolognese.

Other than that I buy cabbage and spring onions and finely julienne with carrots and radish to make my own sauerkraut. I also buy Cauliflower and broccoli and carrot and swede for meal sides ( roast/ sausage mash add veg etc) and peppers/mushrooms/mange tout/baby corn for stir fry. Salad stuff for butties.

WitchyBits · 22/07/2024 17:40

I forgot I do bit spuds and also frozen peas/corn/leeks. Tons of frozen fruit too for porridge/smoothies.

We always have chopped onions, soffrito and chopped peppers in the freezer. They're fine to use as a base for sauces and the peppers work okay in stir fries/fajitas etc although they're a bit mushier than fresh. We also have frozen peas/beans.

I normally have broccoli and cauliflower in the fridge as well as salad bits.

I’m the same. I’ve started buying more frozen vegetables to cut down on waste.
I always have salad stuff and try to only buy what’s in season.
