Do you have a bank account with an overdraft facility OP? Have you looked to see if there are any community kitchens or community fridges near you? Can you ask a neighbour or friend even for some food for the meantime? So sorry you’re having such a tough time.

Mammma91 · 24/03/2024 15:11

Is there anyone around you at all that could offer some tins? Beans and sausages and such? Checked all nooks and crannies for coins?

Mammma91 · 24/03/2024 15:11

Also there may be a facility open with your local council for an emergency grant, especially because you have children. Or phone the bank for an emergency overdraft?

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 24/03/2024 15:12

Have you got any supermarket points? Tesco? Nectar card?

Mrsttcno1 · 24/03/2024 15:12

Are you able to say your rough area OP as then people may be able to signpost you to help available near you today, I know a few options local to me but may not be the same area

GrazingSheep · 24/03/2024 15:13

Could your family or friends give you some food ?

mysparkleismissing · 24/03/2024 15:14

Have you got the ap Olio?
Where are you based OP?

LeavesOnTrees · 24/03/2024 15:14

Do you have any neighbours or parents of your children's friends you could ask to borrow some food off ?
If someone on my street asked me for some dinner I'd give them a packet of pasta and some tins, no problem.

Could you go to a supermarket at closing time and ask if they are throwing anything way ?

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 24/03/2024 15:14

I also think you need to spell it it to friends and family. You need a tin of beans and 6 slices of bread. Don’t sugar coat it. For the sake of your kids tell them how desperate you are. One of them must be able to lend you that.

colourblindrainbow · 24/03/2024 15:14

What area do you live in? I would be very happy to give you some food if you live locally.

Proseccoh · 24/03/2024 15:15

"Olio" app and "Too Good to Go" are good free apps that frequently offer free food etc

HeadsShouldersTitsandArse · 24/03/2024 15:16

We’re in this position too OP. I feel for you. No advice unfortunately.

We get paid Thursday and it can’t come soon enough.

We’re currently living on buttery pasta with two kids also😂 they’re loving it though.. us not so much.

usernother · 24/03/2024 15:17

Ask on your local FB page. People are generally very helpful. You'll get local information which isn't the case on here.

LeavesOnTrees · 24/03/2024 15:17

Do you have a local Facebook group ?
My one near me sometimes has people asking for specific things when in need (a common one being winter coats for children and baby stuff).

Hopeandmoss · 24/03/2024 15:18

Contact your health visitor. They can arrange an emergency food parcel and a small amount of money for food usually a voucher. Potentially they will not be open till the morning though depending on your area, but I would ring them now as they may have an out of hours number. There is an ap called Too good to go, where you can get stuff which is unsold from local shops for a few quid ( however you would need probably £5 to get enough stuff). If you are in housing association accommodation they may be able to help you also and can definitely provide you with some financial advice to support you in the long term

AmaryllisChorus · 24/03/2024 15:18

I'm so sorry you are in this situation.

If I were in this situation I would try not to let pride prevent me from feeding DC. I might start by calling in at the vicarage of a nearby church and asking for help. You can ask them to refer you to a foodbank for later in the week, and they should also provide you with some food to keep you and your family going for the next few days.

Or you could knock on a neighbour's door and explain, ask if they could lend you a couple of tins of soup and beans or some cheese and milk. You can pay them back when you are next paid.

Or post on local FB group and say due to an emergency you are without food or money for the next few days and ask if anyone local can help with emergency supplies. If someone did that in our area, they'd be given enough food for a fortnight within 10 minutes. You can promise to pay it forward when your circumstances improve.

Or go to a local supermarket that has a basket for food bank donations and ask to speak privately with the manager and explain your situation and ask if they would consider making up an emergency bag from the food bank donations.

VanCleefArpels · 24/03/2024 15:23

Call Citizens Advice first thing tomorrow (Monday ) they will be able to access emergency funds / food bank voucher. They will also make sure you are maximising your income ie claiming everything to which you are entitled and/or give budgeting advice in order to make sure this does not happen again

Womblingmerrily · 24/03/2024 15:25

Toast? Sandwiches?

I would also add that the time to be considering the food bank etc is when stocks are getting low not when the cupboard is literally empty - with small children you need to plan ahead a bit, monitor your expenditure and bills and pre-empt an emergency

Sorry I am in Hampshire. I hope you manage to get something for you all to eat for today and tomorrow. I like to keep a stock of long life foods to fall back on if it were needed, can be done cheaply and bit by bit each week once you’re in a better position.

DigitalDust · 24/03/2024 15:39

It doesn’t help for today, but in case it may be useful in future

Hello everyone

We've had a number of reports from people concerned about this thread so, as we usually do in these circs, we're putting our heads round the door with some important reminders.

Right now we can't see any evidence to indicate that the OP isn't above board – if we did, we'd remove the thread straight away. But the truth is that, sadly, we at MNHQ can't know with 100% certainty that any poster is genuine, no matter who they are or how long they have been here. As frustrating as it is, we're not able to vouch for anyone here.

So we always ask users to remember that not everyone on the internet is who they say they are – and remind folk not to give more to another poster, either financially (in cash or gifts) or emotionally (in time or care and support) than they'd be prepared to lose if things went wrong. We strongly advise against parting with any cash or giving away your personal details, and if you receive a PM which makes you uneasy - report it to us and we’ll take a look.

Sorry to hijack your thread briefly there, OP – we really hope you get it all sorted soon.
