How much do you owe for your gas and electric?

I'm £350 short rn, which is a lot less than it was. It was loads more last year. Obviously didn't impact them that much as they've all made billions in that time 🤨 they tried to put up my direct debit so I just cancelled it and I'll pay quarterly. Hopefully the price reduction in April will let me catch up. As long as I don't switch any lights on!

How about you?

I'm about £1400 in credit so they've just readjusted my DD to £30 per month. No idea how I amassed so much credit. Middle house in a terrace of 3. Largeish 3 bedroom with extension on the back. House seems to be very well insulated. Barely ever need the CH on even in the middle of winter. I have a nice electric fire in the lounge which I use alot, electric shower every day. Dishwasher and tumble drier both on two or three times a week.

Usernamefoundunderthebed · 24/02/2024 09:49

Too much. I also turned my direct debit off because they kept hiking it up leaving me in credit, so I let the credit run out and pay my old direct debit amount. This is the first time in my life that I am struggling to pay my bills.

OldTinHat · 24/02/2024 10:23

I had an email from my energy supplier last week wanted to change my dd to £4.03 a month. That's when I found out I was £700 in credit and got a nice refund of £450 sent back to me. I've asked for the dd to remain the same at £60.

whoami24601 · 24/02/2024 10:35

We are around 2k in debt. We were paying only about £80 for ages. Rang up and said this can't possibly be right but they insisted it was. Got a smart meter put in and suddenly they realise we've been underpaying for ages (no shit Sherlock!) So now our DD has more than doubled to pay it off. I'm not stressing about it. They'll get it all eventually and its their own fault. Stupid EON!

@Itwasfinetillitwasnt surely the summer months is a chance to build up for winter months rather than pay off the previous winter?

Good grief.

We're mid terraced too and it helps a lot!

I'm £120 in credit but we only pay £75 a month, low energy users. As someone on a low income, I prefer to keep a buffer in case of unexpected expenses.

Who is your supplier? There is a grant through British Gas (but you don't have to be a British Gas customer) that can give grants, I think step change can put you forward for it.

I am also in debt of £5k and I have recently agreed a repayment plan with octopus, the lady I spoke to was lovely and have said they will match what I pay to wipe off most of the debt.

Do you know what the grant is? My debt with them is 2350 but the only grant I could see says I don’t qualify as my debt is too much. My bill is roughly £450 a month (how?) and I just can’t afford it. I can’t keep up.

user63737383882 · 24/02/2024 12:56

British Gas energy trust I think - I am sure it was through income max

DoAWheelie · 23/02/2024 20:37

Nearly 4k. Luckily they are not legally allowed to turn it off because of OH's oxygen concentrator but it's so bloody expensive to run 24 hours a day. And we have to have the heating on 24/7 as he goes into a dangerous coughing fit if he breathes in cold air.

I've applied to every fund I can find but been turned down for them all.

I just got over 2k written off for a client with E-on Next trust fund, only had MH issues so no extra costs with running equipment. Have you tried that one? sorry not sure if you have to be with E-on - Next.

Yesterday I found out we are £900 in credit

I'd rather most of that was in my bank account than theirs!

I agree, we requested £600 back. It was a very welcome surprise

Floralnomad · 25/02/2024 01:01

I’m in credit , about £150 for both elec and gas .

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 25/02/2024 06:48

£430, I'm chipping away at it by £30 a month. It was a lot more than that, £800ish, but I applied for their grant and they stopped charging me standing charges and vat for a few months which reduced it down to about £500.

TokyoSushi · 25/02/2024 06:52

£42 debt, I didn't think that was too bad after the winter.

Crumpetdisappointment · 25/02/2024 06:56

£200 in credit, which is odd, but they did have to refund me after their error some months ago

PleaseBePacific · 25/02/2024 07:08

None for gas as we're on a card meter. Was in the house when we moved in and is a pita but in some ways has been a blessing as unable to get in debt. Electric owe about £300 which isn't too bad all things considered

Autumn1990 · 25/02/2024 07:09

I pay the full amount monthly. I keep a really close eye on the meter. We’ve gone with only a couple of baths a week sharing water and heating only when it drops below freezing for a few days. When it we really cold we all slept on the living room floor with the fire lit. I just can’t afford to get into debt

Crumpetdisappointment · 25/02/2024 07:13

dishwasher broke,
washing machine on less due to rainy weather
have a smart meter so notice when oven/kettle is on which perhaps makes a difference

Maverickess · 25/02/2024 07:33

Nothing - but I'm on a pre payment meter, so no money= no gas and electric, so we are very careful to eek out what I put on at the start of the month because when it's gone, it's gone.
Switching everything off when we're not in except the fridge and freezer has made a few pennies difference and it goes a bit further.

Manage to keep usage at around £4 a day for both unless I have little luxuries like washing my clothes or using the oven (cram as much stuff in a possible so I use it less) have the heating on for a couple of hours in the evening when I get in from work and 30 mins in the morning for when we get up and showered. It helps a bit with it not being so miserable getting out of the shower wet into a freezing bathroom.

I put the same amount on per month summer and winter but the extra was wiped out pretty fast this winter.

I've read on here that some of the companies are recording record profits, not sure if that's true but it wouldn't surprise me and if it is then someone somewhere is benefitting from everyone else being miserable, or being in debt, because no doubt they'll be charging you extra for not having enough money in the first place, like most places do.

I work full time and work has to be warm, so there is that I suppose!

BobnLen · 25/02/2024 07:45

About £500 due to British Gas cockup not charging us for our electricity and putting the direct debit down to £75, I did ring up and say there must be an error as there is no way it should be that low, BG said we have credit so assumed that was why. I have now had the bill and although we have a smart meter which has given readings, we are on peak save and have had credits for that, they have not charged any kWh just standing charge and peak save refunds, this is from September. They are sorting it out...

Newbeginningsandhappy · 25/02/2024 07:46

£250 in credit. Octopus want to increase direct debit - not sure why.

Mammma91 · 25/02/2024 07:48

£138 debt in the electric and £191 in gas. Slowly paying of each at an extra rate of £25 a month. It was over £900 and it’s took ages to pay it off and have my DD’s adjusted so I’m paying the right amount each month.

PansyOatZebra · 25/02/2024 08:59

About £200 in credit. Just upped the direct debit though from £88 to £125 as we’ve just had a baby.

Meadowfinch · 25/02/2024 09:05

I'm about £140 in credit.

But I had to have a tree felled in spring 2022 which cost £1,000 (it was tipping over and dangerous) and the tree surgeon cut it into 6" rounds for me.

I spent all that summer splitting the rounds into logs - very hard work, but it means I've had free logs to burn all this winter, so I've had the log burner running most cold days. My 2023 gas/electric bill was £1350. I've used about half so have enough to see us through to April, with some left over for next year.
