How much do you owe for your gas and electric?

I'm £350 short rn, which is a lot less than it was. It was loads more last year. Obviously didn't impact them that much as they've all made billions in that time 🤨 they tried to put up my direct debit so I just cancelled it and I'll pay quarterly. Hopefully the price reduction in April will let me catch up. As long as I don't switch any lights on!

How about you?

Nearly 4k. Luckily they are not legally allowed to turn it off because of OH's oxygen concentrator but it's so bloody expensive to run 24 hours a day. And we have to have the heating on 24/7 as he goes into a dangerous coughing fit if he breathes in cold air.

I've applied to every fund I can find but been turned down for them all.

Itwasfinetillitwasnt · 23/02/2024 20:41

£150. Hoping I'll catch up over the warmer months.

Flensburg · 23/02/2024 20:42

@DoAWheelie that's terrible! I'm so sorry.

Greycheck · 23/02/2024 20:44

I cancelled my direct debit in November as I just couldn't carry it on for any longer . I must owe about 1.2k now. Going to try and sort it out next month but if I haven't got it, I haven't got it.

Perfect28 · 23/02/2024 20:46

@Itwasfinetillitwasnt surely the summer months is a chance to build up for winter months rather than pay off the previous winter?

Hillrunning · 23/02/2024 20:49

Yesterday I found out we are £900 in credit

Yeah I think you don't understand how living on a low wage works.

@DoAWheelie I'm really sorry. Ime a lot of the policies for these grants were written at a time when energy bills were an unremarkable expense. It's disgusting though that someone in your situation is in debt due to medical need.

£260. Actually that's a lot less than I thought it was going to be. Have turned all the heating off now save for DD's bedroom & should catch up (and have a bit of a buffer) by the time winter comes around again.

Sorry to read this. I can’t imagine how traumatic this this must feel Flowers
I’m in credit. I was paying £450 a month last year for gas and electric but it has dropped considerably for the last few months. I was traumatised by my bills last year

Ilovemyshed · 23/02/2024 21:08

None, I'm in credit by about £140 and they say my DD is too high at £120 (electricity only). I do keep a very close eye on usage though, we use about 340 units a month on a fairly stable basis. Heating is oil, so pay up front for a fill and save towards it each month.

Bloomingdaffs · 23/02/2024 21:10

Couple of hundred in credit but I expect that to go down after a couple of months but hoping to build it up again after April.

PSEnny · 23/02/2024 21:13

I owe about £180, will just wait until the payments over the summer pay this off. I think last year it was over £200 at this time so it’s a little bit less but not much.

Nellieinthebarn · 23/02/2024 22:50

I'm in credit by about £60, but they keep telling me to up my direct debit to double what I'm paying now. I don't understand it, why do they want me to double my payment when I'm in credit, and winter is (hopefully) nearly over. Also I am a very low user even though I've only got electric, and a wood burner, no gas.

SweetPetrichor · 23/02/2024 22:56

We pay monthly for our measured usage so the balance is currently 0.

Rainbow1901 · 23/02/2024 23:02

In credit to the tune of £358 but next bill is imminent so according to Octopus it is at this point I will owe them according to their predictions. We will see!!

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 23/02/2024 23:19

Have 800 credit on electricity but that is from government free top ups. Got latest gas bill 160 but paid off 60 so will pay 50 next few weeks get on top of that. To those with massive bills and medical issues can you not contact a charity like here in Ireland is St. Vincent De Paul and they helped me with my last gas bill and helped me get over the winter months. Shocking that we have to worry about heating when those suppliers making so much profit. Still have not brought down prices enough in Ireland even though wholesale prices are down.

My balance is always zero, because I pay variable DD, but my understanding is that it works depending on when you open the account. If you open it in spring-summer, you'll be overpaying for a while, so that in winter it'll zero out from a previous positive sum. If you open it in autumn/winter when your usage is higher, you'll be underpaying for a while, so that in summer it'll zero out from a previous negative sum. That's the theory anyway. In practice, perhaps in the later scenario the provider will hike the DD in the first few cold months.

Wowzel · 23/02/2024 23:25

16 pounds in debit

Pixiesgirl · 23/02/2024 23:37

I was on the eon scheme where I paid a dd for 6 months at 50% market rates and at the end they wrote off your debt. They did actually do that and credited £1300. I will need to sign up to a new tarriff before it ends in April. The only bad thing was that they are still taking money from my esa, many phone calls and nothing changed, so I guess I will have to tackle that soon.

Who is your supplier? There is a grant through British Gas (but you don't have to be a British Gas customer) that can give grants, I think step change can put you forward for it.

I am also in debt of £5k and I have recently agreed a repayment plan with octopus, the lady I spoke to was lovely and have said they will match what I pay to wipe off most of the debt.

Pixiesgirl · 23/02/2024 23:42

Tbh I will do pretty much anything to avoid a prepayment meter. Being skint is bad, being skint with no electric or gas is just awful.

OhmygodDont · 24/02/2024 07:55

Ours says £160 in debt but doesn’t have this months reading but have just upped the Dd so we now pay £270 a month from £200.

Flensburg · 24/02/2024 09:22

I'm not in debt at the moment.
My heating is gas and I barely use it so that was £20 last month.
But everything else is electric. I live on my own and don't have a dishwasher or tumbledryer. I use the electric shower twice a week. The oven isn't used even weekly. I don't understand why my bill is so high. Washing machine?
I'm with octopus and they sent me a list of tariffs I can change to but I don't understand it.

Flensburg · 24/02/2024 09:28

Meant to say my electric bill was £102 last month.
