Martin Lewis saying it's no brainer. You can be an existing customer or not.
Price cap reduces by 15% April to July.
Obviously no knowledge yet if what winter price cap will be.

With e.on, but this had passed me by: is there a catch? It drops 3% below each change to the price cap, right? I'm trying to see the catch, and can't find one for someone, like me, already with them , paying by by DD,with a smart meter? Am I being thick!

CeeJay81 · 21/02/2024 18:42

I'm with eon and they recently sent me an email about fixing and the options. @Windymoore sign in to your account and you should be able to view the options. I also pay by dd and have a smart meter. I'm still deciding whether to do this or not.

Do you have to have a smart metre for this deal?

Do you have to have a smart metre for this deal?

Yes, according to the terms on the app(I've looked now)

Knackeredhamster · 21/02/2024 19:35

I think you have to agree to get a smart meter.
I dodged one for about a year with eon.
But to be honest like having it now. It doesn't mean you have to have the monitor in your house, just the digital meter.

Yes I got an email about a week ago and if you log in it's there as a choice.

No, as I'm on an Octopus fix until August. I'd consider it otherwise.

It would depend what your yearly usage is, if it's low like ours, then 3% isn't a lot and the £50 you can get from switching to Octopus (if not already with them) could be higher.

Where is the £50 switch offer?

Where is the £50 switch offer?

There are many referral codes in the promo section.

Here's mine https://share.octopus.energy/rust-skunk-5661

If anyone switches using my code we both get £50 credit.

We enjoy octopus smart meter Tariff rates now less than any of the cap rates, no need to wait til April. Start saving now.

Todays power 17.69 /pkWh and gas 3.86 p/ kWh. Rates are on average 30% below current rates.

what are the fixed tariff rates going ? Are they better than this?

previously we had been customers of EDF and regret ever giving patronage on extortionate tariffs.

if you want to use my referral code.

eon have been trying to give me a smart meter for 6 years now, I just ignore them

@workoholic me too

SomethingDifferentt · 22/02/2024 22:51

No chance. We've been on Octopus Tracker for a year and have saved an absolute fortune compared to if we'd been on a standard variable tariff. Probably in excess of £1k as we're reasonably high users.

My rates today are 16.83p/kWh for Electric and 3.96p/kWh for Gas today. And this kind of price has been the case 99% of the time for a year now. Nothing else out there right now can match it.

Knackeredhamster · 23/02/2024 08:40

Wow some of those octopus rates are very cheap.

I vaguely knew that postcodes do change quotes with prices but with my postcode in Devon here is the flexible rate quote.

Which is in par with the normal eon rate for this part of the country.
It's bloody unfair really.

Such a huge difference.

I'm so shocked at the disparity. So actually asking my question really wasn't a level playing field for comparison.
Staying with eon in my area will cost the same.

Jeez fucking water bills and energy.

Ifailed · 23/02/2024 08:47

I already pay more on standing charges then I do for gas or 'leccy, it seems pointless to swap.

SomethingDifferentt · 23/02/2024 09:24

@Knackeredhamster your screenshot is the Octopus standard tariff rates.

If you switch to Octopus then contact them and ask to be put on their Tracker tariff, the rates will be more like what I posted earlier.

With Tracker the rates you pay change every day, up and down in line with wholesale. People are put off because it's possible that a daily rate or rates can be above the price cap - but that hasn't happened more than a handful of times in the past year at least. And in the months where you get one day charged at 35p a unit for Electric or whatever - its just ONE day and the other 20 odd days in the month where you pay between 12 and 20p more than make up for it.

Would honesty recommend switching to Octopus and their Tracker tariff, I think it's the best financial decision I've made in recent years!

I have noticed some of the prices they have offered me state I have to agree to a smart meter.

MrsHGWells · 23/02/2024 09:49

@Knackeredhamster here are octopus tracker rates for Devon (Ex17 ) region as an example. It’s pretty much been around these rates past 12 months .. a few exceptions but rarely exceeds current cap SVR.

the smart meter is not big brother - it’s just a device to measure power usage on a 1/2 Hr basis .. and opens up access to more competitive tariffs.

Octopus is a leading supplier. One of the good ones trying to make a positive difference.

apwlgamgo · 23/02/2024 09:55

I'm not with Eon, but I just keep refixing my tariff with my current provider. Usually you can refix with no fees so long as you're staying with the supplier, so I fixed back in October on a tariff that would be rubbish today, but have just refixed on a below cap tariff until May 2025 (refixed a couple times before that too!) if a better tariff comes out with them I will change again. I just can't go to another supplier (without paying fees). So it's a no brainer for me.

MrsHGWells · 23/02/2024 10:02

@Windymoore if you want any information on smart meters and options dm me- can help understand you best option .

smart meters & their access to cheaper flexible tariffs can save you a fortune

Leafbuds · 23/02/2024 10:11

I"m with eOn but I can't see how to switch on the app - I have a feeling I have a locked tariff but I can't really remember - I know it has an end date that I can have it until, but I thought at the time there was no penalty for switching before that. But the app won't show me any other deals, so maybe I'm wrong.

Looks like their website/app are a bit overloaded at the moment!

Edited

Good grief, thankyou for that.

When I put in my postcode I saw that it was the one rate but believed there were no more available.
So I'd be better off phoning up.

Would you be so kind as to do a search for tq7.

I mean I'd do it but couldn't see any way to find the tracker or any other rates.

How confusing it all is

Appreciate it

I finally got into my account on a desktop to see my tariff.

EOn renewals don't seem to offer much choice, as they have put the standing charge up to 44p on every single tariff. It used to be that there were different variants you could choose from - lower standing charge vs higher unit prices or the other way round etc. But not now. And my current tariff has a standing charge of 37p. And as I live alone in a small flat, I usually try to go for the lowest standing charge one. But if the new unit prices are quite a bit lower, maybe that would actually work out cheaper as I use 3-4 kWh on a typical day.

I think I still prefer a tariff that has no exit fees though, even though it might not be guaranteed for as long - any opinions on that? (I'm electricity only, as our gas in a district heating system that we have no control over - which is a whole other issue!).
