Spent £52 on fuel and a couple of snack bits.

Found out the rent part of my shared house is going up by £50 a month 🙄 annoying.

How much do other people spend on house related stuff like boiler service/carpets cleaned/windows cleaned/guttering cleaned etc?

I'm wondering if I need a separate saving pot for these things 🤔

Happierwithouthim · 12/03/2024 22:54

Definitely need a separate pot girlie I saw 10% of price of the house mentioned somewhere before. I don't have anything like that. I'm still trying to figure this house owning thing out, almost 3 years in this house.

€68 diesel
€4.30 on yogurts for ds & an orange twirl for me

lifelongfrugaleer · 13/03/2024 06:49

My boiler service just cost £80 in the NE
couple hundred for gutters (guess)
windows cleaners no idea as don’t bother
couple Hundred quid carpets unless you get a deal and depending on carpet. Some round here do 3 or 4 for £99

lifelongfrugaleer · 13/03/2024 06:50

Loads of spends but will expense them. Home tonight thank God

Happierwithouthim · 13/03/2024 09:40

Will you come home to chaos or will the three have pulled together at home?

€31 on Nike swim shorts, washed all swimwear and towels together, and all the fluff from one of the towels attached itself to bf's swim shorts. Did click & collect to avoid €5 postage charge

Girlfriend - some people recommend 10% mortgage costs for ongoing maintenance of a property, as a rule of thumb. Honestly, I don't know. That would cover boiler servicing, gutter cleaning, the odd basic repair that crops up, window cleaning, oven cleaning, buying paint/tools for jobs that we do ourselves. But it wouldn't come anywhere near the big jobs, like the bathroom renovation we're just about to embark upon, or the new boiler we had installed. But yes to a separate pot, because it's always useful to have something set aside, even if it's not quite enough! the other thing is that expenditure can be lumpy. Our boiler service, plus our house insurance is due in January, which coincides with peak energy usage and the after-effects of Christmas expenditure...for 2025, I'll make sure I have a bigger pot set aside, oh yes!

Bathroom looks lovely need - is that a cup and cove floor? And yes, I can just see the very clever seating, looks great. I'm afraid I also gravitate towards the expensive option, but well, we do make things last!

Spent a ludicrous amount in the posh greengrocer yesterday - £16 on really not very much. Lovely experience shopping there, but I do tend to gag at the till. The fennel and walnut salad last night was delicious, however, as was the purple sprouting broccoli. The chicken breasts were the cheapest things on the plate! (under £6 for 3, from the butcher).

lifelongfrugaleer · 13/03/2024 18:19

A mix of both happier. Some things will be nailed. Others utter chaos

Chile1978 · 13/03/2024 19:20

Looks like a very calming, tranquil bathroom @needastrongoneagain that fits your dh needs.

@Girliefriendlikespuppies I don't do 10%! But I do budget £200 a month for the house - that also includes things like fluffy cushions! 😍 and at the moment it's only got £40 in it - house things seem to crop up all the time. That being said we've only recently had a full renovation so in a years time we'll probably start long term savings for things such as boiler replacement, new carpets, etc. Not sure yet what I'll budget for that but probably 400 splitting the pot so it's 150 to maintenance and 250 on renovation/replacement. Do you have neighbours you'd feel comfortable asking about any recent(ish) work they've had done to gauge a budget?

What I would say though any savings are better than none so don't worry too much if it's not the recommended amount.

Acc2 is still -990 and that won't change next month. Hopeful that will change in May. Very pleased with my progress on other goals though.

Knowing what I've got in my account has helped me avoid those pesky top up shops that spiral and snacks/small meals out.

ShortFatShambolicHouseElf · 13/03/2024 19:55

I missed my top-up date for vodafone, was offered a swap to automatic monthly payments from my shiny new credit card, so now I don’t need to remember to do it. Not sure if this is good or bad what with my memory getting less of a workout so to speak!

Poor DH has been wrestling with the bank, who refuse to acknowledge that they created the overdraft charges by paying a fraudulent debit. I’ll have to doublecheck everything to make sure the fault isn’t in fact with dh who never asks for or keeps receipts. I keep everything, which ultimately leads to similar problems as I can never find anything.

I see pp starting some garden work. I managed two days in a row without rain, which feels like some kind of record this winter! 🪜🪚🧹🌿🌦️

Nellieinthebarn · 13/03/2024 20:02

Well the council tax bill has hit the mat, and its gone up £23 a month, so not as bad as we were expecting. The water bill has gone down by £3 a month. We are £39 in debit with the electric, but that should sort itself out in the coming month when we use less in the summer. The rest of the bills will stay the same for the time being, car and house insurance are later in the year, as it dog insurance. So at the moment, barring emergencies, things are not really any worse. Phew..

Happierwithouthim · 13/03/2024 21:28

€12.66 on ponston for dd
€38.90 on dinner with bf, he has paid the last two weeks, hoping for dry weather next Wed so we can get back to walk on weds!

I downgraded our Disney+ subscription. They wanted £109 per year. We had the premium option - 4 screens at a time etc. but I bumped it back down to the £79 a year one.

had a mishap with my fave pair of work trousers yesterday. The zip broke 5 minutes before I had a client meeting. Ffs. Need to weigh up cost of repairing vs new.

SheepAndSword · 14/03/2024 10:51

Can I join in next month please 😁

Looks like you all know each other, I've gone £100 over my budget this month so I need a prod.

Abstemious amigos in April? 🤝

needastrongoneagain · 14/03/2024 14:20

Welcome @SheepAndSword

Feels like it's never going to be dry @Happierwithouthim!

I'm a fan of keeping up with our house, so yes, we do have a fund and jobs probably get done more regularly than some folk would do them but it works for us. The big jobs are usually planned round payment of any dividend, more minor from our 'pot'.

Thank you re the bathroom. Yes @BigSkies2022 re the floor, it's non slip to suit DH's needs.

Fuel bill going up £38 as we are using slightly over what we did last year, which I expected.

Other than that, still a low spend week. Although I'll be buying wine tonight!

ememem84 · 14/03/2024 14:50

Welcome @SheepAndSword tell us a bit about you. What’s the sitch?

I have a DH and two dc. Live in Channel Islands. Work pretty much full time. Am trying to pay down credit card and build savings whilst still living the dream!

BigSkies2022 · 14/03/2024 16:10

Welcome Sheep.

Mmm...wine, need. My abstinence rate is running at 86% so far this year, after several nights researching some lovely Loire offerings while on holiday, so I'm staying off it until I get back above 90%.

Tuned into an FT personal finance seminar with Claer Barrett and guests on (drum roll) ISAs. Apparently only 7% of UK adults have a stocks and shares ISA - I am among them, as is DS. Come the new financial year, I'm going to start paying into a second one, then I can compare growth between 2 products (hoping it will be more exciting than watching two snails race, but well, we'll see).

First dry and vaguely spring-like day this week, but weather app tells me more rain on the way. Trying to plan Easter catering - might go full throttle and get a shoulder of lamb, inspired by a Turkish recipe. Not currently clear exactly where DS will be on Easter Sunday though, so Easter might not take place on Easter this year.

lifelongfrugaleer · 14/03/2024 17:08

Welcome sheep. Some of us have been here yonks. Others not so. All are welcome
£50 top up shop but will mean less at the weekend

Chile1978 · 14/03/2024 18:40

@ShortFatShambolicHouseElf the sun seems to still being hiding. I've probably got the stat wrong but since July every month we've had over 100% rain - basically it's been historically wetter than ever 🌧

Welcome @SheepAndSword or Bienvenido/bienvenida!

@BigSkies2022 I'm surprised and unsurprised by that. I'm going through a review of my ISAs but waiting a call back so little progress has been made.

2 more big work weeks and then can take the foot off the pedal and have some time off on holiday 🇪🇸 over Easter.

wfh today.

have done a quick sweep round the house and tidied everything up - dishwasher on, all dirty laundry off the floor upstairs and has been dumped into the garage and roughly sorted into relevant piles. will get 4 loads done today if i can.

have thrown away all dead flowers and have trimmed the plants we have and given them a huge watering.

have finally completed and submitted my tax form.

other jobs for break times - frame and put up some pictures - a job i've been meaning to do for ages yet hadn't gotten round to it.

Yesterday spent £85 at Dunelm - frames, wine glasses (we have 3 left and i have 11 people coming round on the thursday before Easter....) and food bags - seemingly the ones they sell are the best. :)

am going to have a go at sourdough bread today too. my starter looks like it might be ready. woop.

Rainbow1901 · 15/03/2024 13:33

I joined our Community Grocery store today where you can shop with tokens - so picked up some useful store cupboard items. £10 spend but that included £5 membership for a year. You can pay it forward too - so next time I go - I'll put one up for someone who needs a bit of help. It's monitored by the charity so they make sure it goes to someone really in need. We were offered a free brew and lunch too which was delicious.
Picked up batteries from the clinic and then used my bus pass to get home so no petrol use on the car.
Yesterdays spends were in total £89.58 at Home Bargains and Lidl so the cupboards are not quite so bare now. But DH was pleased as we hadn't done a biggish shop since the start of March and was wanting to buy a few treats in!! 😋
Credit card debt is still on the way down and one of them offered a transfer deal to a much lower rate of interest of 6.90% with no fee for two years - so shifted that amount and cut a few months plus loads of interest off our final settlement date (if all goes to plan!) But as we all know - life has a habit of throwing curve balls and unexpected expenses - so we'll see how we go. 😏😃

ememem84 · 15/03/2024 13:49

my credit card balance has crept up again. but am holding off until 28 until i make any payments. that's payday and i should hopefully get a nice chunky one. still waiting to find out the terms of my promotion and pay rise. it better be good. :)

SheepAndSword · 15/03/2024 14:07

Hello all!
I was asked about goals, I'm 40s, would like to buy again, minimal savings (only a few thou), no debt, low income.

So goals are:

Deal with some health issues first
Get my mother settled into care home
Deal with her house clearance
Focus on getting fulltime well paid work

I'm looking forward to not having responsibility for my mother anymore, she's bitter and twisted and I need a break to focus on myself for a change.

Also cut back on any superfluous spending! So I look forward to chatting to you all in April :)

SheepAndSword · 15/03/2024 14:08

Actually money and debt is quite fascinating when you start focusing on it

Chile1978 · 15/03/2024 17:05

Sounds productive @ememem84 Need to do a top up shop this weekend and a click and collect. Birthday trip too so will be spends but have a bit put aside so should only be train tickets that come out of the everyday pot. Have seen a photo in a gallery exhbition that I love. Am going to get the photographer details and see if they will sell. Spends£12 (would have been 37 but items were half price and then used a £5off code) £8 bread and snacks (not needed, could have spent £2 for just the bread)
