How to make 25 last the weekend?

WatermelonLou · 26/01/2024 15:59

At that time of the month and the January drag out! How do I make this last the weekend until Tuesday probably. Got some shopping but kids to occupy?

OP posts:
bearcubs2 · 26/01/2024 16:02

Can you take a picnic and just take them out in free places for the weekend like local parks, forest area or beaches depending where you live?
I'm in a similar predicament so following for other ideas Smile

HoHoGo · 26/01/2024 16:08

If it's just occupying the kids (ie you have food and you don't need to buy anything else), can you just leave them to their own devices? Or get them to do something like sort out their rooms - when we do that we always unearth toys they'd forgotten about and then they spend ages playing with them.

Local libraries often have free things on (and the library itself passes an hour or so).

What ages are they?

Calmdown14 · 26/01/2024 16:27

Is there anything you actually need to buy?

Just get out whatever from Christmas they haven't had time to play with properly. No sticker books, crafts, etc that still need finished?

Make a cake or muffins or flapjacks - anything you have ingredients for.

Go for a walk, play park etc.

Keep the 25 in the bank.

CornishTiger · 26/01/2024 16:29

If you have what you need in food wise then you don’t need to spend anything?

headcheffer · 26/01/2024 16:30

How old are your kids?

Snowdropsarecoming · 26/01/2024 16:30

Library
Park
swimming
Free/cheap museum
stay and home and do some paint, crafts, playing, cleaning, reading
I would rarely spend more than £25 entertaining my kids at the weekend
carpet picnic and watch a film

bringsomewood · 26/01/2024 16:31

Why do you need to spend money to entertain your children, or am I misunderstanding?

CornishPorsche · 26/01/2024 16:37

Check your local Facebook groups for free events.

Our local fancy country club has a coffee shop that's open to everyone and a free soft play attached to it. Plenty of mums who buy one drink and spend the morning or afternoon...

Library, a walk round the town centre with a £2 budget per child if you really want to spend the £25. How much for a family swim at the leisure centre?

Any free cinema tickets linked to bank accounts or cheap offers via O2 / Compare the Market etc?

Walk on the common, in the woods, to a beacon or viewpoint. Get them out on bikes or scooters. Go for a picnic. Big playground. Or just leave them to play.

Namechangeforadhd · 26/01/2024 16:45

For really helpful suggestions, need ages/likes/dislikes, but I don't think I ever spent money on entertaining as such? So (obviously age dependent!) : make breakfast (doesn't matter how mad it is as long as it's edible!), go to a playground, go to a library, sort out a couple of things to watch on TV,maybe with some popcorn, learn some kind of Internet dance. If breakfast-making went well, try some lunch-making too! Have you got any toys or colouring books or crafts? If not, nature board: find stones (play football with them first?!) and leaves and stick them to a piece of cardboard.
Ah that all brings back memories, (not all good!)

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 26/01/2024 16:56

Age is relevant but here's some suggestions for lots of ages:

Trip to the park, bring a football and picnic.

Go for a woodland walk and make a list of things they have to find like acorns, pine cones etc

Give them £1 and go to a local charity shop and see the best thing they can find with it

Arts and crafts at home

Bake some cupcakes/cookies

Chestnutsroastgreen · 26/01/2024 16:59

We are going to take the children out on their bikes, do some homework and watch Gladiators. Inbetween encourage them to play with toys, oldest to read whilst we clean the house!!

Chestnutsroastgreen · 26/01/2024 17:00

Do they have any games, crafts etc from Christmas to do?

zurala · 26/01/2024 17:05

Playground, a walk, crafts at home, junk modelling, play board games, bake (if you have stuff in already), watch a film that you have at home.

ginasevern · 26/01/2024 17:14

If you've got food and electric covered I don't see why you need to spend money to entertain the children. Do you pay for activities every weekend? Can't they just play amongst themselves like do some colouring, read, watch TV, go for a walk, play a board game, to to the local swings. My son is in his 40's now but kids can't have changed that much!

I was a single parent and couldn't pay for entertainment (not often anyway).

AdaColeman · 26/01/2024 17:19

Depending on the ages....
Family film afternoon or evening with homemade popcorn.

Family board game marathon, if you've got some Christmas chocolate or biscuits left use them up now.

Serve the tea as a picnic, cushions on the floor etc. Teddy bears welcome for little ones.

Cooking session, make biscuits, use available ingredients.

Art session, all paint a portrait of a family member.

Disco dancing if you've got the space! Put on a show, everyone sings a song, reads a poem etc.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/01/2024 17:19

Buy a couple of bags of popcorn and watch a movie together? Light out, duvets on the sofa, just snuggle up and be together.

Trip to the park, all wrapped up? Get an early lunch and take snacks with you / drinks etc. bag of frozen peas for the ducks

Terfosaurus · 26/01/2024 17:20

How old are the children? What do you normally do at the weekend?

CrapBucket · 26/01/2024 17:22

Surely the answer is screen time

bringsomewood · 26/01/2024 17:22

To me it sounds absolutely bonkers to have next to no money, and spend it on entertaining kids..?! You seriously need to save your money op. Seriously.

bringsomewood · 26/01/2024 17:22

Terfosaurus · 26/01/2024 17:20

Toddlers, from what I can see on another thread.

SD1978 · 26/01/2024 17:24

As others have said, the kids and you have food, and it's winter. They will be at school, and have a weekend at home, they don't have to be entertained. If you need to get out, then a walk to a park, or around the block if you don't have a park nearby.

Talkamongstyourselves · 26/01/2024 17:26

Why do you need to spend £ to occupy your DC?

Holly60 · 26/01/2024 17:34

Yeah I'm not going to lie I'm a bit bemused as to what you are asking. You have food in right?

So just do free stuff for the next two days ...

Ewoklady · 26/01/2024 17:38

Agree … movie with hot chocolate at home
bake something (rice crispie buns - you probably have the stuff in)
use the weekend to declutter and get jobs done (that’s what I do and it’s free 😂😂)
