How much is your weekly food shop?

I’ve just done the food shop online (we usually do it in person) in an attempt to get costs down and not just buy things we see but it was still so expensive…

I managed to find a £25 off your first shop voucher so it should have been £116.06 but it went down to £92.56 with the £1.50 delivery fee.

This will do 7 teas (with half of one frozen as leftovers for next week), lunches and breakfasts (there will probably still be breakfast for next week as I ordered a big box of Weetabix and long life milk) for 2 adults and a 2 year old. The only ‘extras’ are orange juice, dilute juice, bananas and yogurts 🤷‍♀️

A couple of years ago we used to do a family Asda home delivery for £70 for the week. It's now over £100 every time.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 05/01/2024 19:00

about £125 a week for 2 adults and a teenager so really 3 adults include school dinner money, all food, toiletries cleaning materials laundry sanitary ie anything from supermarket, that's everything main and top up shops our budget is £500 a calendar month so technically slightly less than £125 a week.

Biscuithelp · 05/01/2024 19:01

For us (me, DH, one teenager, one 10yo), it is about £100 in the shop then about £20 in top ups. Once a month I do a Big Big Shop which is £150 ish and includes cat stuff, pants and socks, cleaning stuff etc. About twice a month we have fish and chips which is another £30 each. That’s a rough total of £575-£600 for all meals (we all have packed lunches)

£200ish 2 adults, 2 teens, 1 eight year old SEN child (who only eats fresh raw veg never cooked) and 2 cats. All have packed lunches. That includes all cleaning, bathroom stuff etc. No top up shops in between.

How do the cats open their packed lunches? 😺😺

cosypompoms · 05/01/2024 19:06

@MintJulia

It does include nappies but only one pack every other week at about £4 so not a huge cost. Both kids potty trained but wear a pull up to bed. No wipes as we have reusable ones.

I would only cook 4 meals a week as we usually always double up. This week is daal for two days, falafel for two days, roast dinner for two days and the spag Bol from the freezer from a previous batch cook. I make a huge pan of soup every week which we eat everyday for lunch. H takes sandwiches to work and he has cheese mainly.

Everything cooked from scratch with beans and lentils and no fake meats. We all eat the same meal so no fussy eaters here. Kids drink water and oat milk.

Yet every week shopping is £100 whereas it used to be £40 around 6 years ago.

Mumofyellows · 05/01/2024 19:11

Roughly £100 a week, 2 adults, DSS at weekends and 2 Labradors! I shop online at Tesco. This does all our meals, toiletries, laundry and cleaning stuff, including lunches for me at work ( I usually make a bigger portion and take leftovers).

Daisies12 · 05/01/2024 19:13

£50-£60 a week for 2 adults including all meals. Cut juice as your first thing to go, it’s just sugar: have an apple instead

Iamblossom · 05/01/2024 19:13

£200-250 a week. At Lidl. 2 late teenage gym going boys, me and DH

MerryMarigold · 05/01/2024 19:19

About 125 per week. Me, dh, 3 teenagers, 2 cats and a dog. I shop in Lidl, Aldi, Home Bargs. That includes cat/dog food and toiletries and lots of snacks. We eat fairly basically. Tonight we had tuna pasta with courgette and pepper in it. Yesterday we had pizza and turkey soup (soup is sooooo cheap). I buy Soya mince to pad out my mince dishes. I get meat on offers and then figure out what to make later. Frozen fish is another cheap product which lasts several meals. Dried lentils and chickpeas in curries.

How did you get the 25 percent please

@Daisies12
I think I will look at what to cut out. I like to pack many types of veg into every meal and have a full fruit bowl.
I do buy juice every other week to make a smoothie with. We also have lots and lots of fruit, seeds and nuts in the porridge. None of these things I'd want to cut down on really.

I think I over buy too. I like to have a full store cupboard which makes the weekly shop cost more.

Quornflakegirl · 05/01/2024 19:28

£80 - £100 per week shopping at Tesco for one adult, 2 tweens and a cat. We’re pescatarian.

this weeks meal plan is
Tomato & veg pasta
Vegetable pie, roast potatoes and veg
prawn Thai green curry & jasmine rice
Egg and vegetable chow mein
homemade nachos with vegan mince
macaroni cheese and tomato salad
jacket potatoes with beans & cheese or tuna
lucky dip from the freezer
this is an example of what I buy in my weekly grocery shop

I don't drink and this is for breakfasts, packed lunches, my lunch and the cat.

newyearnewnothing · 05/01/2024 19:28

I shop online at Tesco but shop fortnightly as I find buying the bigger packets of stuff and splitting them cheaper.
For 3 adults, 14 breakfasts, pack lunch, dinner, snacks and toiletries and cleaning stuff it's roughly £180

UsingChangeofName · 05/01/2024 19:30

Not much over half yours.
For 3 adults.

I'd estimate we probably spend around £25 - £30 a month elsewhere (for example we get toilet rolls in bulk from Farm Foods once every 2 months or so, and toiletries, toothpaste, cleaning stuff from Bodycare or Home Bargains).

SugarCookieMonster · 05/01/2024 19:59

About £100 a week for 2 adults and a primary schooler. £60 in Aldi, £20 in Tesco on milk, bread and some bits we can only get there and £10-15 on fruit and veg at greengrocer.

I used to do online shopping and it cut the bills a bit. However, DH works shifts and DS has an after school activity once a week so meal planning is essential and I found the dates on food didn’t always work for our plans. It became too much of a hassle so we switched to in person shopping again.

Paw2024 · 05/01/2024 20:32

£50 average for just me at Aldi

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 05/01/2024 20:33

Around £100 a week for 2 adults, 2 children and a dog

Paw2024 · 05/01/2024 20:38

Should add I allow £240pm as it sometimes goes to £60 if I get toilet roll/cleaning stuff etc

MerryMarigold · 05/01/2024 20:49

Iamblossom · 05/01/2024 19:13

£200-250 a week. At Lidl. 2 late teenage gym going boys, me and DH

Wow! That's a lot of food at Lidl. Are they 'on the bulk'? (I have one of those but he's only 15. Eats double what the rest of us eat).

Asifiwouldnt · 05/01/2024 21:18

These two it me to shame
We are around £300+ a week for four adults (five when DD home from uni)

weegiemum · 05/01/2024 22:10

We spend about £200 a week for currently 5/6 (dd1 and her partner are currently living with us too, while they buy a flat, ds is sometimes here and dd2 is on and off at her boyfriends house or he is here with us!)

Includes basic cleaning stuff (have cleaners who bring their own stuff) and some toiletries for dh and me. Also includes alcohol. Dd1 buys and cooks dinner 1-2 times a week as a thank you for her free accommodation!!

mickandrorty · 06/01/2024 10:20

125 a week for 3 adults, 1 teen & 3 younger children, that includes toiletries etc and we do need the occasional top up during the week of bread or milk. But we do not pay for hardly any of our meat.

Iamblossom · 06/01/2024 14:02

They both obsess over protein. We eat alot of meat, eggs and fish, and alot of vegetables, and alot of yoghurt.

I've just been this morning and am £220 poorer 😳

BiddyPop · 06/01/2024 14:40

I am trying to figure out a single person budget - but I spent a lot in December for convenience reasons.

I am going to be in a permanent apartment this month and start to be able to batch cook and freeze again, and do more bulk buying as well rather than what's needed for 2 days.

DGPP · 06/01/2024 14:47

£200-£250pw for family of 5
