Frugal Friends Facing Forward with Fortitude

Happierwithouthim · 05/12/2023 14:12

Here's a friendly space for new and existing frugal friends.

We have all different types of incomes and lifestyles but with a common goal of making the best of the money we have.

Many of us have experiences of becoming debt free or being in difficulty with money for one reason or another so there's no need for embarrassment, just join in, post as little or as often as you wish.

Some record daily spends, some record only spends that are unplanned, some don't record spends at all, the choice is yours!

Is it ok if I join in please? I have been on these threads before and always fallen off the wagon. I've spent loads over Christmas and need to get control over my spending. Reading the first page and seeing people turning their heating off and going up to bed in the evening made me smile, I've been doing that too as it occurred to me it's silly to heat the whole house. I've had a check of my cupboards, fridge and freezer and have a lot of leftovers that will carry me and adult DD through the week, maybe I'll need milk and some fresh fruit but nothing else.

SingToTheSky · 31/12/2023 18:07

Oh no tayto hope it passes soon 💐

Thinking about frugal goals for NY - first it’s just getting back to a routine of tesco deliveries twice a week (we don’t have a lot of food storage) to hopefully cut down food waste. Again this is something I don’t have full control of ATM but may as well live as though I do right?! I don’t want to be starting all the better habits from scratch when H moves out.

And I guess the other goal is spending more on my health/self care and less on unnecessary stuff. 2024 is the year of looking after myself 💪

Happierwithouthim · 31/12/2023 18:17

Ah no way Tayto sorry to hear that, dd will appreciate you more after this!
F*ck it takeaway!!

My frugal plans for next year is to start saving for my next car, going to act like I've a car payment, and factor it in like that.

Fantasea welcome back, stay with us you'll be in better financial shape for it next Christmas Grin

Dc gone to their dads for the night, myself & bf will go watch fireworks and then go for something to eat

Aww Tayto, hope it isn't too miserable. sounds like you have a plan!

Helloandgoodmorning2 · 31/12/2023 19:30

Steak and onion pie and veggies for supper tonight, so all food from fridge and freezer. I returned an Audible book so have put the £5.99 in my savings. Looking on Rightmove for inspiration to move in a couple of years time.

Fantasea · 31/12/2023 21:12

@SingToTheSky when I was with exH, I used to spend so much on food and a lot got wasted so I think you're right to take control of this now. I need to take a closer look at my Tesco orders, I've never really got over the Covid shortages and tend to over-buy plus I do like an offer. I've got 5 tubs of Bisto currently!

ememem84 · 31/12/2023 21:40

@SingToTheSky aorry to hear about H. You got this though. And we’ll be here cheering you on.

love the bun!!!!!

for those of you who remember my journey with “catface” (she does have a real name but in mn fashion catface is her alias). This is her today. A perfect loaf. She’s almost 6kg of tabby floof. Hasn’t left my side today because of the winds here. 70mph which to be fair whilst annoying aren’t anything like the hurricane that smashed us in November (120mph no thank you!)

we had Chinese for dinner. From M&S. ducky pancakes. Chilli beef. Noodles. The kiddos had popcorn chicken and rice. And broccoli.

I’ve had half a bottle of Prosecco. Feel a bit floopy. So am in bed. With catface. The dc are in bed. And I’m getting ready for a run in the morning. I’m determined to see the first sunrise.

2024 is the year I turn 40. So I’m starting it the way I mean to continue. I’m not drinking until dsis wedding in March (so I’ll be sufficiently shitfaced after a couple of glasses of wine…!) and am determined to lose the 10kg I put on having both dc and in lockdown etc. happier. Healthier. Etc.

Here's to 2024 StarWineSmile

Sandytoxic · 31/12/2023 23:53

Cat face is adorable!

I’ve just sold 3 dresses on Vinted. All to the same buyer, but separate purchases, so that’ll be 3 separate parcels. But hey, 3 sales!

best wishes to all for 2024

lifelongfrugaleer · 01/01/2024 07:54

Ah Catface ❤️

happy new year

R00tat00tt00t · 01/01/2024 08:51

Hello & Happy New Year!
I've lurked on a few of these threads on and off for years but cost of living, a big-ish home renovation project and a few other lifestyle changes mean that I really need to take action to have more control over my spending this year.
Can I please join you all for a bit of moral support and advice?

Thanks. She’s my most favourite of my children!!! Haha!

her story is that she came to me at the right time. We seemingly needed each other the most at that point. She was a feral rescue. And spent her first 3 months with us living under a chair hissing and not coming out to see us. Two days before I found out I was oregnant with ds she hopped up on my lap and hasn’t left my side since. She’s my supervisor. Protector of the realm. Napped supreme. I am slightly worried that the fur in her head might wear away because I keep kissing it 🤣

ememem84 · 01/01/2024 09:46

Happy new year you lovely lot!

Wolfcub · 01/01/2024 10:18

Dinner at friends last night which cost me £12 in starters which I think is a bargain for a fab dinner for six. Also spent £13 in Tesco yesterday on soap, bread buns and ham (and flowers for me). The bread buns are gone already!
Should be a cheap day today unless I pay for parking anywhere, depends on whether ds actually bothers to get up to come for a new year walk. I've homemade soup in the fridge for lunch and it'll be cheese and crackers and bits for tea to eat up some of what's left in the fridge

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 01/01/2024 10:50

Happy new year to all and welcome to the many new people! I’ve been on this thread for almost 10 years but I’m not very active (either at posting or actually being frugal 😳) so aim to do better this year. Really glad to see more traffic here than of late as it helps to inspire me!

we’re coming to the end of a big renovation and it’s absolutely decimated our savings. We’re not quite finished and there’s some stuff I’m not happy with so we may end up in a dispute 😬 which I’m hoping won’t cost me too much in fees /advice. Sigh. the other big thing coming up for us is our DC1 is due to start secondary school in September. He has significant SEN and will not be able to cope with mainstream, but I have very little hope that the LA will offer a sensible option, so I’m expecting to need to appeal (and pay for legal advice) and even possible tribunal costs there.

Other things we’d like to do: we need to replace our ugly front door and would like something naice and original in style, but that will be £££. Our car is also getting on a bit so we really need to start saving for a replacement in a few years, once it becomes unreliable /a money pit (we don’t do high mileage so am hoping we can eke a few more years out of it). We’d also like to save for a couple of memorable family holidays - I’d like to take the kids to Lapland and in a few years when DC2 is older I’d like to do a US or Canada road trip. I travelled a lot before kids but my disposable income is now much lower, travel costs are higher and we have to pay for the kids, so this will be a big stretch! And we need to build up our savings again. We also probably need to do more retirement planning and look again at our life insurances /critical illness, as we’d be screwed if one of us couldn’t work.

im a higher earner, DH is a middle earner, but we live in London so our costs are high. The list above is a lot of ‘priorities’ and we won’t be able to do them all to the extent I’d like! I need to bring down food costs a lot so this year I’m really trying to reduce food waste, as we’re a bit slack with that, and also eat less meat (a battle with DH, who is stuck in the 1950s). I want to eat less processed stuff too, I cook our main meals from scratch but still think there’s too much rubbish creeping in around the edges especially chocolate and I’ve gone right off processed bread too. I also need to buy less stuff - we’ve had to declutter a lot for the renovation and it’s been disgusting how much stuff I’ve thrown away /sent to charity /sold. And we still have too much.

Right, today I’m going to finish painting the box room, which will be my home office (following bedroom reshuffles), and attempt to organise some of my belongings. I need to buy a bookcase for it, I would like real wood but will probably be sensible and buy ikea! Need potatoes for soup and cottage pie tomorrow but that’s all.

I started a sourdough starter 5 days ago and it was looking lively on Saturday but is now very flat. I may have killed it but shall persevere. Hanging out in my lovely light new kitchen is one of my greatest pleasures, and reminds me that the huge upheaval of 2023 was worth it!

lifelongfrugaleer · 01/01/2024 11:36

I’ve finished dechristmas just need to get it to the loft now.
will have loads of left overs as guests have cancelled after meal prepping done. Hey ho I’ll use them

Chile1978 · 01/01/2024 11:49

Happy New Year all! Welcome to newbies

@MaryGreenhill thank you for being tbe first to spread best wishes

@HalfWomanHalfChocolate it's odd - I feel new and old. I've been following for 6years but only summoned up the courage this year! I totally understand the post renovation scraping the barrel for pennies - we completed one last summer with the landscaping still to come. Our estimate increased from 180k (architect) to 350k (removing some big chunks of work but inclusive of fees). Covid, brexit, general world chaos hit us hard. We thought very seriously about moving but stamp duty felt even 'deader' money.
@lifelongfrugaleer what a pain. Hopefully some bits can be frozen?

Spends
£30 food/toiletries/household

Timetoswitch · 01/01/2024 11:59

Happy New Year frugaleers!

Financials aims for this year:
Decide whether to replace my car, or if it can go another year (I’d like to eek it out, but before it turns into a money pit)
Save up for 2025 holiday (almost have enough put by for the final payment for this years one)
Pension overpayment or something else
Could really do with replacing some carpets

My childminder has said she will continue doing childcare for DD2 if she moves to the expected school in September. The alternative was changing work hours/ give up job/ then look for a new one. So a relief for now!

2024Hackathon · 01/01/2024 12:20

Happy New Year all! Welcome to newbies

Thank you for the warm welcome and NY wishes. I'm a LT MNer but need a NC for 2024.

I started a sourdough starter 5 days ago and it was looking lively on Saturday but is now very flat.

It took me years to be able to keep any starters because family wouldn't look after it while I was on business travel. That was before I knew I could dry or even freeze starter to keep it going. I've never found it particularly impressive but it's kept me ticking over.

lifelongfrugaleer · 01/01/2024 12:44

Luckily I’m doing the pantry challenge and haven’t restocked fresh stuff so left overs it is.

welcome delurkers , returners and newcomers

nsd planned today.

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 01/01/2024 12:46

Chile I totally get it - stamp duty is wild at London prices (are you also south east?). We did look at moving even so but in our area our existing house had a slightly bigger footprint than the average so if we’d moved to a house that was ‘done’ it would have been smaller, and defo lacking a home office, which DH now has on the ground floor, so I can have the box bedroom for work. That is worth a lot to us as we both work from home more than half of the week, as well as the chance to actually choose the kitchen etc rather than inherit one. I’d lived with my old (inherited, crap) kitchen for over 14 years and felt I’d done my time! But undoubtedly moving would have been much easier and less stressful than this has turned out to be.

Our costs went similarly up and up compared to the pre-covid quotes we had. It has been excruciating to use up most of our savings, which we’d expected not to use, and I doubt we’ve added the same value to the house as we’ve spent. But we did it to live here, so now I have to hope against hope that we don’t have to move for DS’s school!

The garden also needs work 😬

back to the painting… I am procrastinating as I hate doing skirting. Oh my knees…

Chile1978 · 01/01/2024 12:49

Trying to create a list of things I need so I only stick to those items and stop bring an opportunistically buyer.

In case it helps anyone (Who has this in their budget!)
Code : To get your £20.24, all you have to do is add £85 worth (or more!) of items to your basket, then use the code NY2024 at the checkout before 4th January at GardeningExpress

Chile1978 · 01/01/2024 12:58

@HalfWomanHalfChocolate oops cross posted. Well, if you did need plants please see my post above and I hope I haven't been an enabler!!!
Yes also South East, but S/SWLondon outskirts - fanily housing stock limited here too with invariably compromises on size, condition, location. We also decided to do the house to live in not as an investment - yes we could have done without and we are fortunate to have a home, but the works enabled us to live how we want to. We gained a functional kitchen that was no longer a dark corridor and a decent ensuite. Our builders were excellent but we still had hiccups, supply delays/changes, and things that went wrong. We have a never ending small jobs list but have lost all motivation and energy now so I'm in awe of you painting on a bank holiday no less!
We do need another declutter - I do like to be organised but i also love to buy for the girls.
Have you heard of IPSEA and SOSSEN?

lifelongfrugaleer · 01/01/2024 14:45

Done quite a bit of deep cleaning today. Very satisfied

Nellieinthebarn · 01/01/2024 14:51

Well I deviated from the meal plan on day one, but not a problem because I didn't use any more ingredients, and we got some bonus snacks.

I was planning porridge for breakfast and bacon and cheese quiche with tomato salad and chips for lunch, but we had bacon and tomatoes for breakfast and a cheese omelette and chips for lunch. So same but different.

Its still a tomato soup and bread rolls for tea.

I used up the quiche pastry up making some cheese straws for snacks.

So a NS day today.
