Sick of being cold

I just need a rant!
Me and my children left an abusive relationship, I left with nothing,
Not even a phone.
Ive worked incredibly hard and stayed with family and have just managed to buy a house by myself. (I'm grateful every day for this)
But I'm bloody cold
I can't afford to put the heating on, and my son asked me why there is smoke coming out of his mouth.
I grew up in a freezing cold house and I swore I'd never let my kids suffer like I did.
Im so grateful we are safe and free,
And I used to love this time of year but it's affecting me quite badly, physically and emotionally!
Does anyone else feel the same?
I'm doing absolutely everything I can and it's helping (hot water bottles, layers etc) but the reality is..
I have a pretty constant headache and shoulder ache from being so bloody cold.
Roll on next summer 😅

Put the bloody heating on. They cannot cut you off so what are they going to do? If you can't pay the bill they'll put you on a payment plan. That's fine. We've had that before when struggling with bills. I picked up some extra hours and eventually cleared the balance.

We live rurally in the North and have a house renovation going on so no heating. It's cold so I understand how you feel. We're fortunate enough to have a log burner so one room is warm but,for the others, we've borrowed small electric heaters from friends. I've also got a throw to put over us, thermal curtains and some heated socks. They are making a difference. Worth looking in charity shops for the curtains and some extra layers of clothes, blankets or throws?

It’s utterly shit. You should be able to be warm. It’s not much to ask for.

if the budget will allow then I can recommend these fake oodies. I’ve been wearing mine nonstop since it arrived a few dates ago. And the price has gone down again. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silentnight-Oversized-Charcoal-Wearable-543606GE/dp/B098P7S9F8/ref=pd_ci_mcx_mh_mcx_views_0?pd_rd_w=RK1uB&content-id=amzn1.sym.6aea875e-359f-49f3-864f-cff62d586b6a%3Aamzn1.symc.ca948091-a64d-450e-86d7-c161ca33337b&pf_rd_p=6aea875e-359f-49f3-864f-cff62d586b6a&pf_rd_r=6A76MMXXZ4WE6FWZAC3J&pd_rd_wg=wDwwp&pd_rd_r=58b33b48-0c83-4219-89fc-5266916418e5&pd_rd_i=B098P7S9F8&th=1

Please look out for second hand or immitation Oodies. It isn't possible to be cold when wearing one. Plus warm socks and slippers.

wishuponastar1988 · 10/11/2023 20:57

Who is your energy supplier OP? Octopus sent me an electric blanket last winter as I had a young baby in the home so maybe worth enquiring if your energy provider does anything similar?

christologymum · 10/11/2023 21:11

I'm feeling same, I've started a new job last week. Internal promotion but means I'm at home every day where as before I was out and about a lot. I just feel so cold and low. Determined not to have my heating on too much. Today it's been on a couple of hours just to 18 degrees and my smart meter is showing I've spent £7 😢
I'm sat with gloves, hot water bottles, throws and it's just making me feel ill and isolated.

I'm going to go and work in a library one day next week just for a break.

I've ordered a heated throw, and small heater just to try and warm the room I sit in.

Hearing goes off at 6 and I always have a bath and get in bed to watch tv rather than hearing the house. Kids have electric blankets on.

Lyracappul · 10/11/2023 21:21

Primark have 7 pound fluffy leggings/ tight at the moment and they’re warmer than leggings. Can be worn under everything. Also have you seen that candle under terracotta trick? Blankets on the sofa.. body warmers for kids.. Have you a chimney’? Install a second hand stove will stop you loosing heat up it and the output from a stove is so much higher..

I live in a freezing building site. This is our third winter approaching and already bedrooms are 10 degrees. It is horrible.

Best buy this year are oodies- very expensive but absolutely worth it - we wear them all the time and sleep in them.

Wear thermals, double socks and heavy quilts over duvets.

GaribaldiGirl · 11/11/2023 22:36

My house is big, old and draughty so to save heating the whole house I bought a few of those oil filled radiators. They’re really fuel efficient and I just put one in the room we’re in. Quite heavy to move but I’m thinking I need the exercise. They really take the chill out of the air.

grievinggirlneedsadvice · 11/11/2023 22:49

Sounds like us last year- was one of the most miserable winters of my life! Circumstances have changed this year but tips I have:
-Heat one room well (if possible) and live in there rather than heating lots of rooms a little bit. We actually shut up some of the house and all slept in one room.
-go to warm spaces in your community (you may have to hunt for them but there are charities that provide warm spaces where people can go and have a cup of soup etc.
-go to the library after school/Nursery and be warm, have a quick dinner at home and then go to bed.
-electric blanket in bed, put it on for a bit then duvet traps the hot air- toasty at night, doesn't need much at all. If you work from home work from there too- place a cheap picture behind you if you need to attend an online meeting and dont want people to see the headboard.
-heated drier for washing, also heats a bit of the room too.

We survived it and I'm happy to say things have changed this year so you never know what's around the next corner for you either x

Sugarfree23 · 12/11/2023 12:18

@dreammattemousse how are things, did you manage to fix the radiator valves?

I'll assume you've checked with suppliers to make sure you are on the best tarrrif?

dreammattemousse · 12/11/2023 12:36

I tried but no luck!
I have a friend of a friend coming round next week to have a look for me! And to bleed the radiator I couldn't do!

Also, When I moved I did lots of research and went with the best tariff!

My little girl is poorly so I've decided to just put the heating on for abit today to make sure she is warm and snuggly! And it's glorious x
