What have you replaced with a cheaper version ?

That's it really.

To reduce my shopping bill I've found alternative cheaper options for the things we love such as baked beans, washing liquid/detergents, cereals ...
Some things are a no go and just don't taste good/preform as well but I just wondered what everyone else has replaced as a product that may have cost much more before but does just the same as a cheaper version ...

Or maybe even cost saving actions such as diluting disinfectant and using a spray bottle instead of buying anti bac and bill buying hand soap/dishwasher tabs from Amazon ...

Thanks 🙏🏼

Nothing really, more own brands

Ilikewinter · 25/10/2023 16:05

Pretty much all food is now own brand, I buy refills for things like kitchen, bathroom spray bit they are only a but cheaper so not that much difference!. Apart from wash powder due to alergies I stick to what we know. However, I still buy branded shampoo, deodorant and skincare products which I am sure I dont need to do but hey ho!

Doodledeedum · 25/10/2023 16:05

@Nsky62 yes I'm turning to these more and more I've found the Tesco Stockwell brand of stuff really good

Try asda just essentials and look online at reviews

Soggybaps · 26/10/2023 09:41

So I do my food shops at Aldi and the only thing I buy that is branded (due to sensitive skin) is Fairy washing detergent and fabric softener.

I use a “dishmatic” that has washing up liquid in and find my washing up liquid lasts for eternity!

any branded skincare or shampoo/conditioner I buy from home bargains as tends to be a bit cheaper.

I buy a lot of non-perishable foods as they tend to last longer and I can make things go further (such as dry pasta / rice / sauces) as good bases for meals. we are eating much less healthy too as I buy frozen things as they last longer and tend to be a bit cheaper than fresh.

my weekly shop can be anywhere between £70-£90 for 2 adults and a 3y/o. Used to be able to pull in a weekly food shop for £50! 😭 x

Grantanow · 26/10/2023 13:35

Heinz

Doodledeedum · 26/10/2023 19:20

@Soggybaps Ah yes we go for more frozen and dry food too now and I buy bills of pasta and rice where I can

Good too for home bargains thanks!
Do you ever use savers? I used to think they were decent prices

B&m is great

qotsa · 26/10/2023 19:28

@Doodledeedum is your DH called bill by any chance 😂😆🤣 keeps popping up in your sentences.

BeansOnToast32 · 26/10/2023 19:40

M&S ketchup £1 for a 495g bottle. Far superior to Heinz, it's thick, dark red and tastes rich and tangy rather than sweet and it doesn't have any of that runny liquid water that Heinz tends to have either.

Their brown sauce isn't bad either, same price and has a bit more tang than HP.

I also love their roasted garlic mayo. Probably the best shop bought garlic mayo I've tried but that comes in a smaller bottle.

Doodledeedum · 26/10/2023 19:48

@qotsa 🤦🏽‍♀️ I really should proof read 😂

I like Aldi organic cider vinegar, it’s with the nuts and seeds rather than with the other vinegars.

PauliesWalnuts · 26/10/2023 20:08

Lidl two in one lavender detergent instead of Fairy and Lenor.
Sainsburys bleach tabs instead of thick bleach.
I also buy celery, leeks and carrots, peel and chop, then freeze together as a soffrito/mirepoix for stews and casseroles.
Nice bar soap instead of shower gel.
Also buy the giant bottles of BedHead shampoo and conditioner from TK Maxx - lasts for months and months.

NewDogOwner · 26/10/2023 20:09

Pasta. Stopped buying fresh pasta. Now I have to wait for dry pasta for dinner which seems to take forever.

2023shady · 26/10/2023 20:10

The only branded things I refuse to give up are
Heinz bean snap pots
Persil washing powder - but I buy a giant one for £20

wildwestpioneer · 26/10/2023 20:23

I used to buy high end toner and moisturiser, I now buy Aldi

I buy Aldi branded stuff where I can, even my purple shampoo is Aldi

I bought a £39 air fryer to see if I liked it, then was going to upgrade to a ninja, but I've stuck with the £39 one from Asda

I have an £89 vax that replaced my Dyson that died

My clothes tend to come from eBay or charity shops

wildwestpioneer · 26/10/2023 20:25

Oh and the Aldi Rose and Rhubarb hand wash for a quid is a dupe of the Molton Brown stuff

TiredArse · 26/10/2023 20:30

Grantanow · 26/10/2023 13:35

Heinz

Definitely. Price gouging twats.

Polish ketchup is good. Cheaper and far more tomatoey.

Supermarket colour wash powder is good as well. Powder goes further than the wash capsules.

And I agree with bar soap instead of shower gel.

ElinorDashwood68 · 26/10/2023 20:31

Asda's yeast extract instead of Marmite. Can't tell the difference

MintJulia · 26/10/2023 20:40

Salmon, replaced with rainbow trout (30% saving)

Sliced ham replaced with ham I cook myself (50% saving)

Jam with home made jam using free damsons & greengages (90% saving)

Coffee - Dow Egberts granules replaced with Taylors decaf on half price offer (20% saving)

Breakfast cereals, replaced with porridge oats, that I mix with some sultanas & chopped apple,& microwave. (40% saving)

HowYouDoinMooin · 26/10/2023 20:50

I buy own brand bread now instead of Hovis, M&S super soft white is very good and 75p I think!

I can’t give up Diet Coke though as we have the caffeine free version plus anything else tastes rubbish 😭

gerteddy · 26/10/2023 22:59

Dishwasher tablets used to buy Finish. I switched to cheap ones and I can't believe I used to pay £10+ for a tub of them when the ones at £2.50 do the same job!

Used to buy fairy non bio liquid tabs and conditioner. I switched to non bio liquid tabs from Aldi but I still buy branded fabric conditioner as it smells nicer.

Toilet rolls were changed many years ago to cheaper ones.

I've tried some other changes like ditched the lurpak but not for long and I try get it on offer now.

I do still buy quite a lot of brands especially crisps, chocolate and fizzy drinks. The cheaper stuff isn't anywhere near as nice!

heartbroken22 · 29/10/2023 22:33

@gerteddy which own brand dishwashers are they?

Daniki · 30/10/2023 08:39

The only thing I will keep is Hellman's Mayo, branded shampoo & conditoner, deodorant& branded sanitary towels, can't find an own brand decent pad so stickin with always. (Extremely heavy here so no option) anything else I will switch to own brand I haven't found much of a difference! A lot of companies changed recipes etc on products to save money too which have affected how they taste/use.
