What have you replaced with a cheaper version ?

That's it really.

To reduce my shopping bill I've found alternative cheaper options for the things we love such as baked beans, washing liquid/detergents, cereals ...
Some things are a no go and just don't taste good/preform as well but I just wondered what everyone else has replaced as a product that may have cost much more before but does just the same as a cheaper version ...

Or maybe even cost saving actions such as diluting disinfectant and using a spray bottle instead of buying anti bac and bill buying hand soap/dishwasher tabs from Amazon ...

Thanks 🙏🏼

Lidl’s sausage and beans is better than heinz.
Aldi’s own cereal is just as good as Kellogs
asda’s essentials range is pretty good.
aldi’s cat food grain free £3.39 a box and my cat loves it

I shop around to find the best deals

Lidl's own ketchup and mayo are good. Mayo especially tastes just like Hellman's to me. Tesco own brand mayo is awful.

MadamVastra · 30/10/2023 09:02

I asked my dh and he said 'you soon' 😂

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 31/10/2023 19:53

I only buy frozen veg now, less waste and has saved a few quid a week.

ohsuzannah · 31/10/2023 20:27

Swapped Morrison's beans for Heinz, huge difference in price 😮

We now buy the Sainsbury’s own hand wash for the bathroom, it smells absolutely gorgeous and is only about 60p. We’ve changed from Fairy dishwasher tablets to Sainsbury’s own, same with the dishwasher cleaner.

savvy7 · 07/11/2023 20:45

Instead of fabric conditioner, splash of white vinegar (30p a bottle from Tesco). Or do without conditioner altogether.

savvy7 · 07/11/2023 20:48

Also soap instead of shower gel. Lasts much longer

muchalover · 07/11/2023 20:57

Morrisons "butter" which is £1.27 and just as good as clover.

Home bargains for cleaning products. Cheapest washing pods because I like the beads so buy them on offer.

Spray cleaner is zoflora made up. Also used as an addition when washing bedding or animals stuff.

I try to collect and dry lavender to use as a hoover freshener.

Friendofdennis · 07/11/2023 21:00

Now use aldi dupes for Aussie shampoo and conditioner also their toners and moisturisers. The Shea butter toilet roll instead of Andrex. Lidl Colombian coffee is lovely lidl san Celestino sparkling water ( ha ha ) not san pelegrino and has lovely fresh sharp taste Lidl or aldi laundry products are so much cheaper than elsewhere and just as good. M and S milk and own brand butter £1.80 is good

HerRoyalStressHead · 07/11/2023 21:03

Asdas own gluten free range is good and so much cheaper than branded gluten free options.(I have a coeliac son)

Thomasina79 · 08/11/2023 14:06

Bought lots on eBay especially for my little grandaughter. I tried Lidl instant coffee but it was disgusting so have gone back to Nescafé!

dutysuite · 12/11/2023 22:46

Dishwasher gel tablets
Washing detergent- and have found Aldi’s own brand is actually much better for my sons eczema
Stopped buying Heinz beans - I have found M&S the best alternative
Washing up liquid / toilet roll
Stopped buying Walkers crisps now buy own brand.

I started shopping more in Aldi but their prices in some cases are now more expensive than Sainsbury’s and the quality not as great.

I'm actually quite appalled at how much we were spending when I started to properly budget - but realise how lucky we are that we are in a position to tighten our belts, I know many people are already at capacity. But we have swapped:

Field and Flower meat subscription in favour of Lidl
Who Gives a Crap toilet paper in favour of bulk buying from Amazon
Naked Wines in favour of our local independent wine shop
Ocado deliveries for a big Lidl/Tesco shop with the car each month
Fairy/Persil capsules for Lidl own brand
Bakery bread in favour of dusting off our bread maker
Bought after school snacks for home made flapjacks
Shop bought coffees/lunches in favour of flasks and a lunchbox from home

We've also swapped most things to supermarket own brands, the only things we wont swap are Hellman's mayo, and Weetabix minis. Other swaps haven't even been noticed by the rest of the family. I have bought most non-perishable christmas food from Lidl, including a frozen goose which we also had last year so I know it's good quality. That cost £29 as opposed to £100+ from the butchers which we've had previously.

I can't tell the difference between Hellman's mayo and Lidl's Batts version.

MattDamon · 17/11/2023 18:43

Another Lidl mayo fan here. We go every few months and get most of our sauces/condiments from there now.

I would say we've more given up stuff than replaced it. We both gave up diet coke/coke because of the insane prices. Same with takeaways.

We're eating less processed food and doing more cooking from scratch. Although, we still have a weekly treat like Crosta & Mollica frozen pizzas (stock up when on sale), M&S frozen tempura and spring rolls with our own rice and noodles, Quorn burgers with nice rolls and homemade chips, etc.

Heinz

Yes no more Heinz. The prices cannot be justified when there are good alternatives

caringcarer · 17/11/2023 19:44

B&M often have branded goods cheaper. Nescafé Gold has been £5 and it's £7 everywhere else. I bought 4 when I went as it's further to go there.
