Do these direct debits seem too much?

Picture to save time but these are me and my DH direct debits every month. Do these seem reasonable to you? Do you think some of them are too much/or actually ok? Trying to find ways to save money every month (our incomes combined are around 48k) so would be interesting to get outsiders opinion!

Firstly. Speak to a Protection Adviser and see what you can do about your life insurances.

Pet plan I've always found ridiculously expensive, so if the pet has nothing pre-existing I'd be looking to switch to Many Pets or Insurance Emporium lifetime gold.

Sky would have to go, and I'd be looking at Now or something similar.

I'd switch to sim only when the mobiles are up and I'd check that extra payment with Vodafone. It is usually cheaper to add both mobiles to your home insurance.

Then I'd be looking to pay the loans down fast. They're the main issue.

PinkRoses1245 · 30/09/2023 07:04

Water is very high. A lot of insurances do you need them all? It’s usually cheaper to buy annual insurance if you can, and instead save a bit each month to pay for it.? Phone is high but assume that’s a device. Sim only much cheaper. Sky obviously highest thing you could cut.

Pleaseme · 30/09/2023 07:12

I’d get rid of sky. I just sign up for stuff for a month and then get rid. Disney in the holidays with Tesco vouchers.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 30/09/2023 07:39

Emrc- car services £18 a month, what's that for as seems high?

Fallingthroughclouds · 30/09/2023 07:42

I'd get rid of Sky that's crazy pricey. Do you need three phones? £41 for one is too much. Rest looks about right.

Overthebow · 30/09/2023 07:47

If you’re looking to save money, cancel sky and get one subscription like Netflix. £75 a month for tv is ridiculous. Your phone s are also high, no need to pay £40 a phone.

Tilllly · 30/09/2023 07:49

I ditched pet plan and went with animal friends
Same cover much cheaper

That's what we pay for sky but it's broadband, sports package and other shite DH watches

Water is high - you not on a meter?

User174085934 · 30/09/2023 07:51

Is your Sky out of contract, if so I would ring them up, we pay £58 for Sky TV, Sky cinema which includes Paramount+ and multiroom, we keep Sky as we like the convenience but you might be better off with Now TV or Sky stream if you just want to keep the Sky programmes.

User174085934 · 30/09/2023 07:54

Water looks high, we pay £43 but you may be in the South West where it is high, it seems to vary greatly around the country unlike gas and electric

Glittertwins · 30/09/2023 08:07

We pay £35 for water per month. I also have all mobile phones linked to the one contract and the data is shared so it's only £50 per month for 4.
I'd say Sky and broadband is very expensive. I know I got a better deal on Virgin on phone/broadband/tv by negotiating. We only use the broadband though, it was cheaper this way which seems ridiculous.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/09/2023 08:12

Be wary of changing insurers if your pet has an existing condition as its unlikely to cover it in future.

Also check the terms carefully. We use Many Pets and find them very good but not all policies include dental treatment, so while the monthly payment is cheaper you might end up paying if dental work is needed, which is fairly common in cats, no idea about dogs.

clary · 30/09/2023 08:13

I agree with others, your phones are v high. How long have you got left? Do you need that level of (I assume) data? I pay for five phones and it was about £60 Inc three devices, now down to about £38 Inc lots of data for ds2 but the rest of us use WiFi at work etc.

Also yy Sky is a lot. If you're cutting down it's hardly essential. Our Netflix is about £10 pm.

SootspriteSearcher · 30/09/2023 08:16

I would cancel sky or ring up to negotiate if you want to keep it. We just have amazon prime and disney+ at the moment. We've just done a half price trial for Paramount and watched everything on there we wanted to, I think we might do Netflix next.

And look at changing mobile phones. I've got ours for £5 each a month through o2 sim only. 10gb data, we get discount on top of that for the 2nd, 3rd & 4th phone, plus £2 off each of disney & prime. I used uswitch to compare deals and waited for a really good one! We bought our phones outright from music magpie.

Starfish125 · 30/09/2023 08:20

Thank u everyone for the input, yes we are definitely getting rid of sky after you guys confirmed it is a joke! We can get a fire stick from my cousin so think we will go for that.

I can't cancel the petplan insurance, my cat has severe epilepsy and they have covered various treatments and hospital admissions for him also we claim for the medication every month so it's just not worth leaving.them.

The phones are.high but I've just changed mine toal a SIM only contract which also has my daughters tablet on the contract and I know she's used data on it hence the higher price as last month it was £27.
I am also on a water meter.

Definitely keep petplan with that diagnosis. My dog has lifetime with IE and we have to stay now because he has ongoing ear problems. You don't want to be paying out for his medication if it's more expensive.

ChimChimeny · 30/09/2023 08:30

Paying insurance monthly is basically a very expensive loan. You'd be better off getting a credit card with zero interest in spending which you use only for insurance and pay monthly

There are plenty legitimate and cheaper options for TV before turning to an illegal option 🤔

Starfish125 · 30/09/2023 08:44

@Snittler it's a victimless crime? Not actually hurting anyone!

So’s stealing from a shop, but you do you 🤷

stickypoint · 30/09/2023 09:00

@Starfish125 life insurances look good, just curious whether they still cover you for the expected levels? If not I'd review those. We chose to increase ours significantly and incl critical illness. I'd rather not rely on work benefits.

NepheliLoux · 29/09/2023 19:29

You’re paying a lot for TV, Broadband and phones. £75 for just Sky TV is insane! You could get Netflix AND Disney+ and still save over £50 a month.

I think your water is high - we pay less than £30 a month for a family of five, but then we pay double what you are paying for Gas and Electric

depending were you are
£ 26 water
£ 30 sewage
I m in the south, 2adults and child

lampformyfeet · 30/09/2023 09:11

Be careful of changing pet insurance! All conditions claimed for previously (or even noted on your pet’s record) will be classed as pre-existing and therefore not covered. Also avoid annual policies- anything claimed that year will be restricted the next. Lifetime is better and stick with the same company throughout. If you’re not doing that, then have a decent amount of savings put aside.

Nothing is a victimless crime. By doing this, companies like Sky have to put more resource into shutting down illegal streams, which will ultimately impact their good customer's prices. The bit that most people are stating on this thread, yet failing to see the irony.

LIZS · 30/09/2023 09:29

Does dd need data on her tablet, not just use wifi?

Vettrianofan · 30/09/2023 09:41

Scrap your TV licence and Sky TV. We did a few years ago and so glad. Never watched all the channels we paid for. Waste of money. I do not miss live TV because I never watched it to start with.
