Reasonable food budget for four adults

Hi,
I was just wondering what others would consider to be a reasonable weekly food budget for 4 adults in a household.

As per usual... it all depends. Vegan, vege,or neither?
What are your nearest shops and what is it your family dislikes?
Including packed lunches? Cooking from scratch? Big freezer at home?

Dacadactyl · 23/09/2023 20:30

We are a family of 4 (2 adults, DD16 and DS11) and when we eat majority veggie dinners, with sliced meat or tuna sandwiches for lunch, I can bring the shop in at just under 80 quid.

Today, I bought a lot more snack food and more meat than normal and it cost 108 quid. No alcohol included in this, but washing powder, toothpaste and loo roll were included.

I shop at aldi and would say if you budget for 100-110 pounds a week, you'd be ok.

BHRK · 23/09/2023 20:31

£200pw

Countrygirl38 · 23/09/2023 20:33

We are vegetarian . We do have a chest freezer in the garage. We all take lunches to our places of work with us.

I don't drive so I do go to my local Co op sometimes but can get food shops delivered by all the main supermarkets if we wanted too.

If you shop at the co op I'd say a million quid a week then lol.

Marylou2 · 23/09/2023 20:37

£200-250 a week. More if including alcohol. Probably less if vegetarian.

Kitkatandcoffee · 23/09/2023 20:42

Two of us between £50 and £60 a week. That includes cleaning and laundry stuff and toilet rolls. It doesn’t include alcohol. That is for breakfast lunch dinner snacks etc. So at least double that.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 23/09/2023 20:45

We’re 4.5 adults (ds girlfriend here a lot) and we’re heading towards about £180 a week.
Saying that, ds is a gym addict and a massive meat eater, and 3/5 take packed lunches 5 days a week.
Thank goodness we have 1 vegetarian or it would be worse!

ChicoryDip · 23/09/2023 20:45

Last week's food shop was £130 for the week (all meals apart from school lunches for DC). It did include a joint of meat and some household stuff. No alcohol as we get that separately.

If we have a veggie week I can do it for just under £100 a week but there aren't many treats in that. That said, if we really had to cut costs there's still some 'give' in there (going to cheaper brands, no alcohol, cheaper fruit/veg etc.)

BarbaraofSeville · 23/09/2023 21:09

Depends what you can afford. £200+ pw is way above average and there's no need to spend anywhere near that much to eat a good diet.

As vegetarians you could do it for under half that if you needed to and were good at cooking with pulses, seasonal vegetables and eggs etc.

HerMammy · 23/09/2023 21:16

£200/250is excessive, plenty ways to spend less.

Icedlatteplease · 23/09/2023 21:17

I'm currently feeding 3 adults for £80 a week and am currently wondering if I can bring that down.... (I probably can)

But we all eat meat and don't buy tescos basics range so that helps.

Clariee45 · 23/09/2023 21:24

Can be done on £70 a week, £100 more reasonable, £150 if have a bit more to spend

Countrygirl38 · 23/09/2023 21:42

Thanks for the replies so far. I currently spend about £100 a week for the four of (my children live at home and are young adults) I have quite severe ADHD so don't find budgeting the easiest . I am trying to stick to a budget. Sounds like £100 a week is maybe reasonable though.

We're 'technically' 2 adults and 3 dc. But 2 dc are 13 and 15 year old boys so 8n reality we're shopping for 4 adults and one child.

I'd say we spend about £150 ish a week.

Clariee45 · 23/09/2023 21:47

Yes your doing well on £100 a week, that’s only £3.57 per adult per day which is about what we aim for, plenty of people spend far more

CinemaCrazy · 23/09/2023 21:48

My household consists of 4 adults and I spend £1000 per month on food shopping. We normally have a takeaway once a week. One adult eats lunch at their workplace three days a week. One adult WFH all the time and two are retired and have one or two lunches out per week.

BansheeofInisherin · 24/09/2023 11:25

We are veggie and I can feed 4 adults for less than £100 a week. But I cook everything from scratch, and we don't eat a British diet, mostly.

HerMammy · 24/09/2023 17:09

Why do people comment oh we spend £1000 pm, when the OP is aiming for a budget, £1000pm is a huge chunk of many households income, maybe some kind of stealth boast? odd

The OP asked what others consider a reasonable budget for a food shop is for four adults and I answered.

HerMammy · 24/09/2023 17:22

@CinemaCrazy
You must know £1000pm is not average or reasonable, especially in todays climate where everyone is looking to economise.

CinemaCrazy · 24/09/2023 17:26

Of course, by having a range of answers it may help the OP realise that he/she is doing well with their budgeting.
Also it’s good to get an answer from someone that does actually have four adults in their household.

frozendaisy · 24/09/2023 18:50

Similar family set up, only buy local meat, and alcohol. Packed lunches because it's cheaper than paying school cafeteria fees.

Just food, no liquids included £80/90 a week including the meat.

Add liquids on, beer, two bottles of wine, orange juice, squash and a few cans of fizzy drinks, another £50 on top.

Obviously there are weeks we need laundry cleaning stuff.

WombatBombat · 24/09/2023 21:07

We’ve had family here for a week (4 adults, 3 kids) and it’s been about £140 which has included a top up shop for milk, bread and fruit & has also catered for a coeliac.

No alcohol or toiletries.
