No you dont need the trainers

Moving is so expensive

Well done on keeping in the holiday spends happier

We just frankly don't have enough money at the minute. Can't wait for August when dh gets paid again.

£40 Lidl, 20 petrol, 19 country store, 25 the range (not necessary)

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/07/2023 17:04

Found you!!

Jumping back on the frugal wagon after a very spend week/day 🫠

Had a lovely time in Devon, where we stayed was sort of glamping, so a very posh shed cabin with a separate loo/shower. There was a communal kitchen with a fridge and hob to cook which was really handy. Think I spent around £200 for the week which includes eating dinner out a couple of times, a few lunches, ice creams etc.

We did eat in for three of the nights so saved some money there.

Home last night and then spent most of today in the hair dressers 🥴 dd and I some highlights done plus hair cut, we're both really pleased with the results. Mine came to £115 and dds £100, I put £35 over to dd and her nan helped her out a bit as well.

I used the money from my nhs bonus that I'd ear marked for self care.

Also spent £64 in Morrisons on top up shop.

So after all that I've got around £350 for the rest of the month which should be doable, if I'm careful 😬

Will catch up with the thread now...

Colliewobbler23 · 08/07/2023 17:05

Oooh nice meal plan need... I'm really struggling with ours. I feel like our appetites go a bit funny in the hotter weather. Having said that - I've done the online shop for £75 Inc packed lunches and collection is tomorrow. I've ordered some extra things for 'just in case' as I had a few quid to spare.

Is anyone buying and saving things for December yet? This year is going to be so tight for us and I've never had to start in July before. Its usually last week of August before I even ponder it all.

Colliewobbler23 · 08/07/2023 17:08

@Girliefriendlikespuppies 👋🤗 your glamping sounds cool. I've done glamping in Devon too and bloody loved it!!

needastrongoneagain · 08/07/2023 17:28

Glad you had a lovely time @Girliefriendlikespuppies, glamping sounds good (I think!).

@Colliewobbler23 I've not bought anything re Christmas but I've a savings pot on my banking app specially for it, which I'm putting money into monthly. I'll use my Nectar points and the cash back I'm getting from my Chase account too. So Christmas is budgeted for at least.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 08/07/2023 17:49

I'm a summmmmerzet girl as well 😁 I like living here, close to the coast/countryside but also close to big cities.

Collie i need to start planning for Christmas, I was to save £400 between now and Nov just for Christmas presents. Welcome back, I think I might remember you, have you got a Ds?

Need are you getting NHS rehab support as well? Don't be afraid to ask for more support, you shouldn't have to go private in theory....

North omg re the bus crash, it's scary being the parent of older teens as the stakes are so much higher imo.

Can't remember who mentioned The Detectorists, but dd and I discovered this series earlier in the year and both absolutely loved it. So gentle and very British sense of humour.

Colliewobbler23 · 08/07/2023 18:06

@Girliefriendlikespuppies yes that's me! 😊 I think we bought our shared ownership houses at the same time!

I did have a savings pot for Christmas & Birthdays and then DH & I had a blip. All my savings went. Now we're okay and we are trying to save as much as possible again. First blip in 20 years so it's not too bad (although felt horrible at the time!)

We have so many birthdays between October- January too! <Deep Breaths>

I should have a better job by then. Although the Cornish job market is a load of balls!

Thestartofsomethinggood · 08/07/2023 20:54

Petrol today. £57 as on motorway so expensive

kessiebird · 08/07/2023 22:38

School fair £15 not bad. It was DDs old primary so I just dropped her off with some money.

£9.50 funfetti cake sprinkles from Amazon. Fancy a bit of home baking this week.

Tomorrow is likely to be spendy as DD has a sports competition and regardless of how she does I've booked food for me, DD, 2 x grown up step children and Dsis to celebrate the end of a great school year for her. DH at work and DS being a his teenage self, so at least that's two less!

We have v little planned this summer for various reasons, no holiday (boo but good reasons) but I love getting ideas for next year from here. I may be super organised with all things autumnal and Christmas. I know how those blips feel collie at an stage now that I remind myself we got through okay.

WeightoftheWorld · 08/07/2023 22:54

Hi hope all well.

Dropped off and just seen you all in active, I'm too tired now and be off to bed soon so placemarking really so I can find it easily to come back another time.

Best to all

Colliewobbler23 · 09/07/2023 08:15

kessie those sprinkles sound pretty cool!

NSD. We had torrential rain and storms forecast for today but the weather forecast has changed and now its sunny all day. I don't trust it though!

Probably go for a sea swim or a woodland walk with snacks / drinks.

We're due to collect our Sainsburys weekly shop this afternoon and I stocked up on the new Aldi price match stuff so it'll be interesting to see what they don't actually have! Also I activated my 3 x Nectar Points on online shops.

I must try a No Spend Week... but I don't know if that's actually possible!

ememem84 · 09/07/2023 08:15

I keep falling off. Life is busy and is getting in the way.

I was in the midlands on Thursday for work. Morning tea in stourbridge with a client then lunch. Afternoon tea and cake with another client in Worcester. Flight home (from Heathrow).

yesterday we took ddad to one of the local Manor House’s for some falconry. Met the most beautiful birds. And flew a couple of owls before the rain hit and we had to abandon it. We’ll go back for the rest another day.

DH and ds are still sleeping. Dd is up with me. I’m so tired.

lifelongfrugaleer · 09/07/2023 08:40

Speaking of all things frugal to do. Do you realise Collie your seasonal lists are in the frugal Hall of fame. Legend they are x

lifelongfrugaleer · 09/07/2023 08:41

I need milk, fruit and salad today then that's it. Oh and cash

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 09/07/2023 08:58

Aww yes the seasonal lists, I'd forgotten about them!! Collie are you still in your SO? We've been in ours 7 years now 😳 have been really happy with the house so am pleased I went for it.

Planning a NSD today, long overdue!!

Colliewobbler23 · 09/07/2023 09:22

Oh yeah!! I was thinking about those lists yesterday thinking how organised and inspired I was back then. I can't think of ANYTHING to keep DS occupied in the Summer holidays now he's almost 10 😂 I love making lists - I find it so soothing. And once they're finished it's comforting knowing there's "stuff" to do that won't break the bank.

My Sainsburys receipt has just come through and so many things have been substituted. About 10 items! And my shop is now £10 more than planned (thankfully we get a refund / coupon but still....)

girlie we sold ours just before Covid but I really miss it! We made lots of profit on the SO - they're really popular and selling it was so easy! Buying a shared ownership was the best thing we ever did!!

lifelongfrugaleer · 09/07/2023 10:24

Let me think what my ds used to like at 10. It's a tricky age

Colliewobbler23 · 09/07/2023 14:35

Thanks life that'll be helpful.

Just got the Sainsburys shop and so many things were dated tomorrow (things we cant shove in the freezer)! We had refunds on it all but its such a phaff.

The new Aldi price stuff was fine though! Interesting :)

I'm feeling tired from all the grocery mental load 😂

lifelongfrugaleer · 09/07/2023 19:02

Ah that's annoying about the dates

DS like skate park and always has scooter, skateboard etc. We went to lots of outdoor parks
Still the beach and forests. Lots of tree climbing and adventure playground.
Starting to get some play out freedom but friends all live nearby and he's a second

Thestartofsomethinggood · 09/07/2023 19:15

I remember the lists.
£40 today in marks and Spencer’s. Mainly fish for the freezer. They do individual wrapped ones that is useful as we often eat separately

HalfWomanHalfChocolate · 09/07/2023 20:19

Hi all, I’ve been away for a bit. No time 😭. But lovely to see Collie back 👋🏻 (I’ve been around for ages, used to have a festive name). I also remember the lists, they were amazing. I remember when you and Girlie bought your homes!

I also loved the detectorists. So subtle but wonderful.

I’m having an even harder time with work than usual - my staff have been dropping like flies so
I’m covering a lot of ground and I have some big deadlines. There have been lots of 3am finishes, I am the most tired I’ve ever been! Another long evening ahead, but after my deadline tomorrow I’m hoping for some breathing space for a day or two.

The renovation work continues, with its highs and lows. Right now my house is propped up with those acrow prop things, and my ‘kitchen’ is a pile of rubble. I think the steels were going in on Friday so we should be past the peak of demolition etc and it should start to take shape from now. We move home in 8 weeks (probably without a finished kitchen but nearly there) so it better had do!

So far the budget is under pressure, of course…. There’s always something to add, but not much to take out. It will save us thousands if we paint the new bits ourselves but that does complicate matters with second fix and flooring etc, so I’m not sure what we’ll do about that. We don’t have £10k for decorating but nor do I have time to do it - that much decorating, in my ‘spare’ time, will take me a year, especially as I have to do the kids’ bedrooms too.

Anyway, the frugal challenges continue outside of the build work, which is in A Whole Nother Category (of finances and of brain!). Bit of spend this week on swimwear for the Dc, who have outgrown their stuff from last year, and on nice beach towels for us all, worth the investment as they are very lightweight and dry so quickly (we had one between us all before and I was impressed, but hoping we all get in the water a lot this summer so will need one each). Other than that, and building work, spends have been minimal. Except for food. I have lost control of that completely. Partly because I’m buying more convenience foods (ready meals for DH etc) due to time pressures, and partly because I’m shopping much more often because the fridge in this flat is tiny and also not cold enough - the top shelf is over 10C. Somehow shopping at least twice weekly, and top ups, makes a huge difference! (And Dh still doesn’t ‘do’ meat free meals 😬). Only 3 more weeks here then off to PILs and then on hols, I will be glad to see the back of this place honestly! That fridge is the bane of my life right now.

If I’m honest, I’m also eating a lot of chocolate and snacks. It’s all GOT TO STOP. Need to make some big changes when we get back home.

BigSkies2022 · 09/07/2023 20:52

Half you can do some of the things all of the time, and all of the things some of the time, but you can't do all of the things all of the time. If food budget is sliding a bit because you need to rely more upon instant dinners, then so be it!

And while I'm at it, pay for someone to decorate! Otherwise you won't feel like you've moved in to your renovated place, no matter what the expenditure on it.

Colliewobbler23 · 09/07/2023 21:53

Hi half thank you 😊 I remember you too!!

Our car insurance is up for renewal in September so I just got DH to have a random check of quotes to see if they're pricey. I saw another thread about insurance going up.

Well..no claims, nothing for 11 years. Driveway and garage parking. Super safe area. Very boring car. It's gone up by £15 a month! We're in shock. I'm so pissed off. DH just checked on one comparison site so I'm really hoping he can get a better deal in a few weeks.

Glad we checked in advanced though....

kessiebird · 09/07/2023 22:17

half I wrote a report at the back of an ice rink this morning while DD trained. There's simply not enough hours in the week. 3am is hard core. The house sounds great!

£69 meal out as planned. Was lovely and I enjoyed treating family as I rarely get the chance too. As they'd been good enough to sit and watch DD's competition for 3 hours. Pleased that's done, we have a quiet few weeks now...

Colliewobblerr23 · 10/07/2023 10:32

Spent £10 on a clothes rail for the utility room (it's actually for wetsuits!)

i really hope I don't drop off the thread but I'm going to try and post a few times a week instead. As I'm trying to cut down on screen time and MN always gets me!
