Inexpensive cat food suppliers? Any suggestions?

Trying to cut costs- like everyone, and have two (rescue) cats. With cat food prices increasing I am looking for cheaper suppliers.
They won't touch very cheap brands, will prefer to go hungry and yowl a lot and it end up being wasted. Whiskas or Felix they will eat, I can't afford the posher stuff. I tried making my own cat food from online recipes using raw and cooked meats, fish, heart etc- my cats were horrified and wouldn't touch it.
I currently pay around 37p a sachet , and I don't mind buying in bulk.

Cans should be cheaper than sachets. Have you tried Butchers classic?

JackOBothSides · 20/04/2023 20:32

I buy Whiskas from Amazon; I change sizes etc depending on offers but often buy 120 sachets at 31p each

BarbaraofSeville · 22/04/2023 05:57

The cheapest I've found for Felix AGAIL is to get a subscription from Pets at Home.

You get 44 sachets for about £14.

The cheapest higher meat food is probably Smilla from Zooplus is currently cheaper than Felix and Whiskas but mine won't eat it. Probably a non starter as to get the best price you need to buy £40 worth for bulk discount and free delivery. So not the way to go for untested food for fussy cats!

If you can get yout cats onto a mainly dry diet you'll save a fortune. Pouches are ridiculously expensive.

Yes, good point. One of my cats enjoys dry food and I could consider replacing some of his meals with dry food. My other cat has a sensitive stomach and can't eat dry food at all. Thanks, I do sometimes buy dry food, but will consider buying it more regularly. I feed my cats in different rooms anyway as one of my cats is a greedy bully who eats fast then make a bee line for the other cat's plate.

Aldi cat pouches are actually ok. The nutritional content is similar to the expensive brands.

Ollybob · 22/04/2023 07:33

Dry foods can be terrible long term as cats don't tend to drink as much as they need and can cause issues with kidneys/bladder particularly in males.
Don't get me wrong I do use dry food but always alongside wet and it's a specialist one as my youngest has had a bladder blockage in the past.
If you can get it, lidls coshida cat food is good, however my lot much prefer the new version in the darker blue box, there's no sugars in it which means they rarely throw up, not sure how it's linked tbh but I've had friends say the same.

wehavenotomatoes · 22/04/2023 09:47

Dry cat food doesn't save money. I just paid several thousand pounds on surgery for my cat for bladder and kidney issues that would most likely have been prevented with a high proportion of decent wet food in her diet.
Also, a cat water fountain can save a lot of money in vet bills, but as a minimum site their water bowl away from their food bowl to make them drink more.

wehavenotomatoes · 22/04/2023 09:51

Oh and read the nutrition label. My vet told me to feed my cat 'cheap' food because she has to be on a low protein diet for medical reasons but assuming you have a healthy cat you probably want more meat and less sawdust in your cat food so opposite criteria to me. I was surprised to find for example that Sheba met my vet's criteria for 'cheap' but coop own brand is higher protein for less money.

Mine eat Aldi (sometimes!)

JamMakingWannaBe · 22/04/2023 10:19

Definitely the Butcher's classic mentioned above. Tins are much cheaper than pouches. Look in B&M or Iceland as I've found my "main" supermarkets don't stock it.

My local Sainsburys does, it's £4.30 for 6x 400g

caringcarer · 22/04/2023 11:06

My 2 cats eat Aldi tinned cat food. It has high meat content. They also have a chicken breast each on Sundays when I roast.

JobMatch3000 · 04/07/2023 17:04

I've just bought DCat Coshida pouches from Lidl. He prefers fish to chicken so we got the ocean selection. Grain and sugar free. He has cleared his bowl which he rarely does as he prefers the jelly to the chunks! 12 x 85g pouches for £3.19. We'll be stocking up.

MenorTayn · 15/11/2023 11:07

I feel your struggle! Cat food costs can add up. I've found that buying larger bags or bulk cans can save you some money without compromising quality. Whiskas and Felix are good choices in that regard. You can read more about it here: topcatbreeds.com. You're doing your best for your rescue kitties, and that's what counts.

I get really fancy cat food for £30 a month for my cat. Not sure what the OPs monthly budget was, but that seems pretty good to me for high grade pure steamed meat, plus it's delivered at that cost, so no shopping or carrying.

It's from a company called KatKin. The price should be £60 a month or so, but I order portion sizes twice as big as my cat needs, and always defer my next order by a month, so I only get a delivery every two months, which lasts 2 months. For whatever reason, their pricing structure doesn't really go up much if you double the portion size, so this means I get it at basically half the price.

Blueeyedmale · 17/11/2023 06:30

I got some at farmfoods yesterday 12x85g sachets £2.59 looks good at the cats seem to enjoy it and they are very fussy

Do you have a referral code or do you just wait for it to turn up on social media for trial offers?

wildwestpioneer · 17/11/2023 07:21

Try Aldi.

laclochette · 17/11/2023 09:39

I have a referral code! Although this price is what a pay every month at the full price (which works out at almost half price with my double portions, bimonthly delivery trick). Happy to share referral code if you're interested of course 🙂

TheCatWithGreenEyes · 17/11/2023 10:50

Just bought some purina in coop 8 sachets for £1.31 from £5.25. They are discontinuing it. It was right on the bottom shelf

Reallynotoverreacting · 17/11/2023 10:57

We use the pate from Lidl for our cats and they seems to enjoy it, but they are fussy buggers and we have to rotate it with Felix AGAIL every few months.
My dog would eat any old shite but those goddam cats are rascals!! (Love them dearly)

LauraSaidIShouldBeNicer · 17/11/2023 12:44

Get a few large chickens cook them and pull all the meat off portion up. I do this and feed along side dry.

Yes please. I have two cats about 3.5kg and 4.5kg but they both seem to eat the same (small one is a very active hunter). Should I say I have one large cat or two? Or is it easy to play around with?
