Is Lidl and Aldi still cheaper?

worktrauma101 · 18/04/2023 16:45

I was just wondering if Lidl and Aldi were cheaper shops?

I know a few months ago prices crept up to almost match Sainsburys!

We're having a tight month or two as redundancy has happened and would love to shave £10ish a week off our grocery bill (which is already pretty basic!) We're a family of 3.

Thanks :)

Depends on your tastes though . I bought Aldi bran flakes and my dustbin husband who eats anything actually couldn’t eat them and he is happy with Tesco own brand bran flakes and their chicken breast fillets are rank .

If chicken smelt off then I'd take it back, I buy thigh fillets from Lidl which have been fine. I don't buy cereals other than oats so can't comment there. Chocolate is far superior than Tesco brand at both. I can do my whole shop at Lidl without a problem.

daffodilandtulip · 19/04/2023 06:33

I find they all have cheap things and they all have nice things. (And they all have horrible and expensive things.)

I do a huge online order for cupboard stuff at the start of the month from asda, then I top up from Lidl, Aldi and Sainsbury's. Get the best of both worlds by alternating each week, once you know what you like and which items are best value.

I don't think anywhere can definitively say they are the cheapest anymore.

I agree, Lidl has lovely own brand chocolate. I also like their tortilla chips and guacamole- never had better, unless homemade.
Deluxe nut muesli is nice. I am now eating fruit muesli (for a change) and it's also nice.
Never had problem with meat from Lidl, never stinks. It's not rule they're bad quality. If it stinks, it should be returned.

postwarbulge · 19/04/2023 09:54

The only disadvantage to shopping at Lidl or Aldi is the long queues at the automated checkouts, only half of which ever seem to be working.

worktrauma101 · 19/04/2023 09:56

Thank you everyone. Going to give it a go!

Thankfully our Lidl is brand new and really speedy. Good at opening new checkouts when it's busy too

I think aldi is still cheaper and the quality is better than the price matched equivalents. it’s consistently cheaper on things rather than just on selected items.

AlltheFs · 19/04/2023 10:04

It depends what you buy. Aldi isn’t cheaper for us but Lidl usually is. We use a mix of Lidl and Tesco with the occasional bit of Aldi. We used Aldi for the big Easter shop (we were hosting) and that was really well priced but on an ordinary week Lidl is usually slightly cheaper for us.
Tesco on the clubcard prices is often the same as Aldi. We buy a few things in there we can’t get at Lidl and all the fruit/veg as our Lidl/Aldi stuff is dire.

We live rurally though and the nearest town only has small supermarkets- Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, Co-op.

We used to shop online but have had to go back to in store to get the prices down by shopping around. Well, DH has-it’s his job!!

JorisBonson · 19/04/2023 10:17

We've recently switched from Aldi to Tesco delivery and found the prices to be pretty much the same, with better choice. Plus when I go to Aldi I always come out with a bunch of tat I don't need.

VincentVaguer · 19/04/2023 10:19

I think it's true that Tescos and Sainsbury price matched items are worse quality than Aldi or Lidl. I still find Lidl much cheaper than Sainsburys but I've started shopping at Tescos more.

worktrauma101 · 19/04/2023 10:46

So I did the online basket test with Aldi. As I was adding stuff to the trolley (online) I was noticing very little difference in price and a few things were considerably more expensive at than Sainsburys.

I was doing last week's sainsburys shop so was comparing like for like.

Anyway the difference on a £71 shop at Sainsburys was £59 at Aldi!

The only thing that wasn't available was a single courgette.

I wasn't expecting that! Really pleased 😊

Last weeks shop didn't include things like tea bags and loo roll.

But still impressed overall!!

No, and I can never do a whole shop in either.

Godwindar · 19/04/2023 11:08

worktrauma101 · 18/04/2023 16:58

Thanks both! I'll have to do the basket thing.

@Floralnomad ah that's a shame. The difference in cost used to be huge and now its pretty similar.

I guess I was hoping that their prices had magically dropped 😂

Longterm Aldi shopper. I noticed this week and last, the prices were lower and I came out with 3 large bags for more of a price I would expect. Meat and fruit/veg seemed to be lower again, having been high at the start of the year. So I do think you will save. I would have been less confident of this a couple of months ago, especially if someone was shopping with savvy in a supermarket.

Floralnomad · 19/04/2023 13:12

@Okunevo they weren’t off , they were according to my adult chicken eating son just tasteless and inedible . I don’t cook with chicken thighs as nobody eats them

HangryFace · 19/04/2023 16:06

If you have a sainsbury's local near you and can go lateish, they often discount some really nice stuff including prepackaged vegetables.

Obviously not realistic for a regular shop but I often get some nicer bread, veg and snack stuff that way.

I thought the word rank meant something that smelled bad, I don't know all the slang words here! I don't buy chicken breast as I find it pretty bland in general.

Echo40 · 20/04/2023 06:52

The which basket guide is based on specific products not necessarily all the ones we regularly buy.
We used to be big lilds aldi shoppers hut over the last year both upped prices some things in lidls more expensive than morrisions next door.
My aldi / lilds and morrisions all next to each other with iceland/ b&m short distance away.
Our lilds has had massive availability issues and big queues which has put e off going there.
Plus they scrapped the weekend deals which I used to love.

Aldi also noticed rises and some availability issues meant I couldn't do a whole shop and the queues are bad.
Even middle ailse been crap.
In aldi we brought a lot of basics juice/ eggs / milk/ bread/ coffee, sugar, choc spread/cheese Plus premium lines like fresh dirty fries/ deluxe pizzas all gone up a lot.
As the gap started to close and tesco started price match I did big monthly shop at big tesco further away and only did local lilds/ aldi/ morrisions for top ups.

We switched to sainsbury in Dec and happy with quality of their own brand, including value likes like hubbard/ Lovett bakery find reductions/offers and nectar better but instore experience is what wins for me nice big clean well stocked store ? Human on till no big queue we go weekday evening.

My mum and sister recently changed from morrisions/ tesco and are aldi converts since theirs was extended..
They love it but they can't remember the before prices.

Think which said lilds biggest rise 24% a 4 pack lilds baked beans in October 2022 cost me £1.09 now £1.70.
Box boil in bag rice was 98p now £1.49.
Coffee now £2.49 was £1.89.
Cheese was £1.79 think £2.85 more expensive than morrisions value line.

My kids some reason don't like lilds/ aldi cereal so always go sainsbury/ tesco own brand as cheaper than morrisions.

Aldi never have reduced meat anymore.
Lilds never have the veg boxes.
Tried magic bags they used be good then they were rubbish.
Finding some reduced at smaller supermarket sainsbury local/ tesco express and coop but it's being there at the right time sainsbury around 6 and coop tesco usually between 6_7.

Definatly meal plan, make a list
Do a few veggie or pasta dishes pasta bakes a cheap one with value garlic bread.
Batch cook and freeze.
Baked potato cheese and beans
Cheese toastie with value tomato soup
Omlette and chips.

Both Aldi and Lidl way cheaper overall although individual items sometimes cheaper in other shops if on offer

I thought so too, rank means something stinks. But maybe it's mumsnet dictionary that something without taste=bland.

This is my observation too. Especially branded stuff like coffee. I always check beforehand price in Asda, before I buy in Lidl, because sometimes it might work out cheaper. Same with Lindt chocolate- Asda very often has offers, so it's basically same price as Lidl's own. I'm talking about these 70% dark chocolates. Unbranded milk chocolate is much tastier in Lidl than Asda.

SpringLobelia · 20/04/2023 19:25

A couple of weeks ago I bought a small bag of stuff at Aldi and just out of interest did a like for like comparison with Tesco and Waitrose. It was just regular stuff- some rice; some chocolate; oranges' a mini bottle of prosecco or two just whatever i was buying that day.

Aldi came out at circa £9
Tesco at circa £14
Waitrose at just under £30.

It was as close to like for like as i could- so own brand compared to own brand and so forth.

It was quite eye opening for me.

Rank definitely doesn't mean tasteless

I don't find Aldi chicken breasts to be very tasty but they arent rank

Floralnomad · 21/04/2023 17:56

To clarify I’ve found a definition :
Rank – is slang for something that is horrible, in bad taste or actually smells unpleasant
therefore , yes it can mean smell but can also mean something that is horrible , which is what my son meant when he called them rank . Hope that clears that up .

Happygirl79 · 21/04/2023 18:07

I have always been a Lidl shopper but on the past three occasions they have over charged me by a considerable amount. The app didn't record my final shop either so I was given no credit towards the bonus free bread £2 off etc. The treat of Greek yoghurt that should have cost £1.79 ended up at £3.58 for the pot as they charged me for 2. I live a fair distance away so didn't go back and since my shopping wasn't recorded on my app I had no proof anyway.
I won't be using them again. I can't afford to
