Is Lidl and Aldi still cheaper?

worktrauma101 · 18/04/2023 16:45

I was just wondering if Lidl and Aldi were cheaper shops?

I know a few months ago prices crept up to almost match Sainsburys!

We're having a tight month or two as redundancy has happened and would love to shave £10ish a week off our grocery bill (which is already pretty basic!) We're a family of 3.

Thanks :)

If you go on their websites (you can’t on Lidl but you can on Aldi) you can put everything you want in the basket and see how much it will cost before you go 😊 That’s what we’ve started doing and I’ve been doing it for Morrisons too and we’ve been spending around £20 less every week just by doing my meal plan whilst adding the ingredients to the online basket and deleting and changing if it’s costing too much 😋

Floralnomad · 18/04/2023 16:55

The prices are marginal if you buy own / cheap brand in the other supermarkets . Tesco price match Aldi on basics like mince , tea bags etc .

worktrauma101 · 18/04/2023 16:58

Thanks both! I'll have to do the basket thing.

@Floralnomad ah that's a shame. The difference in cost used to be huge and now its pretty similar.

I guess I was hoping that their prices had magically dropped 😂

Have a look if there’s a food pantry near you as well!! We pay £3.50 a week and get a bag or two of things like cereal, pasta, bread, fruit, vegetables, tinned vegetables, tuna and snacks. They sometimes have things like ham, mash, tinned pie, corned beef, noodles, rice and stuff too so it definitely helps!!

Floralnomad · 18/04/2023 17:15

It probably works out cheaper in Aldi / Lidl because there is limited choice and you are less likely to come out with loads of things you didn’t intend to buy in the first place

MushMonster · 18/04/2023 17:18

I prefer Aldi's and Lidl's food to most of own brand Asda. Especially the cheese. I find Asda's tasteless.
Otherwise, I think basic range Asda is cheaper at present if what I read this morning in the newspaper is right. Apparently, it has been for 3 years now (price matches, discounts and card club discounts taken into account)
Though we still use our local Aldi as I rather get some flavour.

Nothingbuttheglory · 18/04/2023 17:23

According to Which? Aldi is cheapest but Lidl is very close (like, 72.50 to 72.75 on a given basket)

gogohmm · 18/04/2023 17:43

Lidl is significantly cheaper than Sainsbury's. We don't have an Asda locally - the 9 miles each way would cancel out any savings anyway (we periodically do go to asda to buy world food items and my branded shampoo)

PuppyMonkey · 18/04/2023 17:52

It used to be that Sainsbury’s and Asda etc were “price matching” their really nasty own brand stuff to Aldi’s very delicious own brand stuff. Is that still the way it goes?

have you got supermarkets near you that do too good to go & are you a reasonably keen cook? If so that could work well. I know it’s a bit hit and miss but I’ve never not had excellent value when we’ve ordered one from Morrisons. This week we decided to nab one and got lots of large potatoes, some fruit juice, 3 packs of deli wraps, onions, leek, lemons, avocado, tomatoes, lentil crisps, cereal bars and some pancake mix. Random but we’ve made use of or frozen it all and it’s lots for £3.09

@whatkatydid2013 I don't think ours do this but I'll double check! Great idea. Yesterday we used up some chorizo, rice, peas and spices = tastiest paella I've ever had! Couldn't believe it was just using up what we already had!

Still way cheaper imo- Sainsburys in particular is extortionate atm!

aldi used to cost us c£70 a wk for a family of 4- now more £90-£100
but then I got two bags of shopping in sainsburys the other day-£45!!!!

SootspriteSearcher · 18/04/2023 18:06

I still find aldi cheaper than tesco/sainsburys overall. But I do go to tesco for certain things that are cheaper or I cant get in there. I also do a monthly savers/poundland trip for toiletries and cleaning products. I bulk buy toilet roll, cat litter and cat food off amazon. My total shop for everything is £250 per month.

My biggest money savers are meal plan without wasting anything, not buying prepackaged items or individually wrapped snack things. Eat mostly vegetarian meals. Big box of wash powder rather than tablets/liquid. Go down to the cheapest brand of everything (if you really don't like it go up a brand). Plan for days with no time/tired, eg on Fridays I'm knackered so we always have a frozen pizza/nuggets. Saves as otherwise I could be tempted to order a takeaway!

CC4712 · 18/04/2023 18:10

If you have the lidl app, you do get a free bakery item once you'd spent a certain amount and 10% off another, shop if you spend over £250 in a month. Our local lidl has a slightly better range on some more obscure things- balsamic glaze, jalepenos etc. I also like their grassfed beef steaks- even the rump is very good.

I have a blue light card, so get 10% off at asda. I go there if I can't get something at aldi or lidl. Often though, their basic range chickens, cheese, ham etc have all sold out!

As long as you avoid the Aisle Of Shame.

Marchintospring · 18/04/2023 18:55

The Aisle ofShame is sadly just tat now. Used to have quirky foreign exports, cheap domestic goods and just stuff you couldn’t find elsewhere on the high street …ironing board that plugs in being my favourite.

xogossipgirlxo · 18/04/2023 19:14

Only on some items. If you stick to own brands in asda or tesco, it will be pretty much the same sadly. I love lidl bakery though and some of their own brand chocolates and biscuits

livingthegoodlife · 18/04/2023 19:34

I'm finding Morrisons cheaper than Lidl, but some of the own brand stuff in Lidl is tastier.

But cheap tomato tinned soup is 57 or 59p in Lidl, and only 43p in Morrisons. And I find similar on a few products.

Try more vegetarian meals or a few basics like beans on toast to pad out the groceries.

I agree, it's well out of date to marvel at the middle aisle, it's nothing special at all. Unless not all aldis are the same I can't imagine anyone finds them remarkable nowadays

We do a similar thing, but it's called 'fridge risotto'. All of the wrinkly veg from the fridge drawer-never the same twice!

Okunevo · 18/04/2023 18:47

It's often nicer than the Tesco cheap stuff though.

Depends on your tastes though . I bought Aldi bran flakes and my dustbin husband who eats anything actually couldn’t eat them and he is happy with Tesco own brand bran flakes and their chicken breast fillets are rank .

Pointblank2 · 18/04/2023 22:02

@SuperSange I do fridge soup on the same principle!
