Have you turned off your heating now?

I know some people haven’t really had it on all winter - terrible position to find yourself in and I’m truly sorry people have had to do this.

But if you have had it on, have you now turned it off or if you’ve reduced it,how many hours per day now?

It’s late March and ours is till on for 1 hr in morning and about 4 hrs in evening. Obviously it’s not firing up so much as it gets to temp (17 degrees) faster now.

Just wondered when people who’ve already turned it off did so and what those still using it are doing…and when you’d think it will be off fully. Thanks.

No we had frost overnight and I get pain if I get cold. So I have it on at 16 during the day all day (I wfh). It goes off at 10pm and on again at 6am

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/03/2023 19:51

I go by temperature - if it’s cold, it’s on, don’t care if it’s July! Lol. And no, it’s not off yet, it was icy on the ground here yesterday morning!

Gamerlady · 28/03/2023 19:52

To cold yet we have ours on from 4pm to 8pm .. in the day we use electric throws they help massively

sanityisamyth · 28/03/2023 19:54

Mine didn't go on once. DS and I were fine. We had Oodies to keep us warm and now I have a lovely amount of credit on my electricity account.

Wow! You’re a hardy lot! Did you find it really difficult? It just shows what is possible…but I suppose previously, most people had a fire in 1 room and nothing else….so perhaps we are all just softies now.

That must be a sense if achievement, but not nice nonetheless.

Yes, it's been off for a week or two, previously on for two hours a day at 14.

sanityisamyth · 28/03/2023 20:01

@WombatChocolate at times it was a bit tough - when the flat was 6 degrees wasn't fun but quite proud that we persevered. Only have electric heaters (no fire or wood burner) which are EXTORTIONATE so was cheaper to buy 2 Oodies last summer!

Hollyhead · 28/03/2023 20:04

We just turn ours on when we feel chilly and it cuts out at 18 degrees. We've used about 70% of a tank of heating oil since July, it's reduced in price a lot since then so hoping it will be cheaper for next winter.

DelilahBucket · 28/03/2023 20:04

Ours just goes on temperature so it comes on if it drops below 17 in the morning and 18 in the evening. It is currently on about 1.5-2 hours a day, so about half the usage of January.

Butterwicky · 28/03/2023 20:06

I don't put it on everyday, but the past two days it's been below freezing outside here in the morning and 12c indoors, so it's gone on for a bit.

defi · 28/03/2023 20:07

No I'm in the north west and it's been fairly mild.

USaYwHatNow · 28/03/2023 20:08

We've just turned ours off today after I paid our 'winter' bill. Went from £400 in credit to about £30 so that scared me into turning it off! That bill was from mid Jan-today and for gas and electric.

RuthW · 28/03/2023 20:10

I never turn mine off. Set at 17 all year. Hasn't been on much today though.

christmastreefarm · 28/03/2023 20:13

It was cb on for an hour yesterday and 1 hour last week. That's been it in last 10 days.,

FernFairy · 28/03/2023 20:15

No, it is cold, damp and 4 degrees here.

mondaytosunday · 28/03/2023 20:19

No - it's freezing and rainy and I'm not going to be cold! I don't have it on in the bedrooms but I have it on downstairs and as I've set the temp at 18 it clicks on when it needs to rather than only having it on at certain times. I wfh and my daughter is on Easter break so we are here all day. I usually have it off for certain by April but not if it's still cold. On the plus side I didn't turn it on til well into November last year.

I'm also in the north west and the nights have still been cold, even with warmer days. And today especially was freezing (6° feels like 2° at lunchtime) and wet.

samsam123 · 28/03/2023 20:34

mines been off most of the winter - sit under a duvet perfectly warm enough

spanieleyes · 28/03/2023 20:37

Thermostat is now set at 15 during the day and 9 at night. It occasionally comes on but not often. Hopefully my gas bill will reflect this!

Do you just sit under the duvet all day long? Never shower in a cold bathroom? Never have to get dressed or undressed?

catscatscurrantscurrants · 28/03/2023 20:42

The heating goes on for 30 minutes in the morning to warm the house and bathroom before I have a shower. Other than that, no heating from now on. As the days get warmer, it won't need to be on at all.

no i go to work, if its cold in the evening i use a duvet,

the bathroom isnt cold after a shower as the hot water has warmed it

of course i get dressed and undressed what a weird thing to say.

It's just I don't understand the 'I sit under a duvet and I'm quite warm enough' I mean you have to get up in the morning in a freezing cold house and get showered and dressed. So you can't sit under a duvet to keep warm all day.

DanceMonster · 28/03/2023 21:04

I don’t know whether I’m just jealous as I’ve just sat down for the first time today but I don’t get it either! If your house is cold then it’s cold when you’re cooking/showering/getting ready for work/playing with your children/anything else people do day to day.

LindorDoubleChoc · 28/03/2023 21:15

I get up and put my oodie on, but I really can't stand having a shower in a freezing bathroom. So I heat our small bathroom with an electric fan heater (plugged in on the landing) for about 5 minutes before showering. Then I move the fan heater to the bedroom and have it on right by my feet as I dry and get dressed. I figure 10 minutes of electric fan heater per day is cheaper than having the central heating on for an hour or so.
