What do people do at the weekend?

I'm genuinely intrigued as to what people do at the weekend?

I live at home with my parents, have a boyfriend he lives at home with his family as we can't afford to buy atm. I am currently recovering from being in hospital. I went out for the first time in a while to a local shopping centre on Friday mid morning and it was heaving. Struggled to find a parking space, so many people were out, queues everything you name it.

Which I didn't get because all I hear on the news is everyone's struggling due to COLC / bills etc

Now based on this what are people doing at the weekend? If on a Friday the shopping centre is already heaving with people eating shopping.

I also need inspiration of things to do as I have no idea.

Up early to take DD to a sports match. Came home and had a shower / hair wash and put washing on. Had an early lunch at a local farm and pooped into grandparents. Will take dog for a walk in a minute and nip out later to get nails done. Out tonight with friedns for dinner. DP is playing golf all day

tomorrow I’ll do a fitness class and told the kids we can go and see an exhibition we all fancy

A typical weekend, DH goes to gym, I do online tai chi and one or two light household jobs. I or we always go for a walk. DH enjoys horse racing and I've got into it with him, so often watch some of that in the afternoons. Later a home cooked meal that takes a bit more effort. I love reading, so never far away from my book so tend to pick that up about three times in the day. On a nice day I might do a bit of gardening.

There are variations to this, we have lots of hill walks so often go for a 2/3 hour walk on Saturdays with a sandwich. Also, we sometimes see other people, today it's my DM and next couple of Saturdays will probably see friends for coffee. I fancy going to local pub one Saturday soon, as they do a lovely massive plateful for £9.

Sundays, I work. DH always goes for a hill walk, does voluntary training for his job and reading.

Oh lucky you having to hills to walk in! stuck in the city just cleaning the house, eating, reading and relaxing

Blip · 25/03/2023 14:01

Going to an art show and a foodie street market with DD and will also wander into a few shops to find a birthday present for my brother.
Tomorrow going for a walk, a bit of decluttering and organising, making meatballs and spaghetti and watching something on Netflix with DH.

SweetSakura · 25/03/2023 14:04

I am ill, so spending most of the time in bed reading /on the sofa. Just nipping out to take children to and from their clubs .

Re cost of living - I know what you mean, its hard to believe it when I go out and see full restaurants and busy shops etc. But I think the reality is the spending is visible whereas cost cutting is what we don't see.

DH and I have both had promotions so feel fairly cushioned from the rises.

If I was well i would still try and avoid the shops, but would be dog walking as well and me might go out for a day if there was time

We don't spend much on clothes and stuff but the children love things like climbing walls/swimming /ice skating/cinema in the winter and watersports in the summer so we tend to spend a lot on that kind of activity

kitsuneghost · 25/03/2023 11:13

You literally said it was heaving which you didn't understand because of cost of living crisis.
Does the fact you can afford it not suggest others obviously can too.

You’re in a good mood this morning!

TiddlySquats · 25/03/2023 14:14

I do whatever I feel like doing, long dog walks, studying for ou maths degree, gardening, visiting friends, catch up on TV if anything interesting as never watch in the week, read.

Currently going through a decluttering phase so try to fit in a couple of hours getting rid of stuff to charity shop or tip.

Never go to shopping centres.

Meandfour · 25/03/2023 14:17

Me and DH are a similar age to you but in a different position.
Today we’ve been out for breakfast, then had the DCs clubs and we’re off to a family party this evening. Tomorrow we’re going to the zoo.

I agree places are still very busy. Not everyone is affected by the COL.

bellac11 · 25/03/2023 14:19

I think people generally seem quite busy at weekends and I barely do anything. We have cleared some rubbish in the garden, cut back a bit of plants, gone to the dump, gone to look at some garden stuff, having a visitor (very unusual), tomorrow a bit more of the same. I need to get some provisions

Most of the time Im randomly looking at the internet

We would be seen purchasing things a lot of the time though, we're still buying quite a lot of stuff for things we need.

Rebel2 · 25/03/2023 14:21

I guess some people are just mooching about? I was "shopping" yesterday
Really what I was doing was killing time before a hair appointment so I only spent £6!

Usually I catch up on Netflix, clean, cook, food shop, laundry and all the "adult crap" that needs doing

JamSandle · 25/03/2023 14:22

I chill, go for meals, the gym, stay at my partners, see friends, watch films or YouTube, visit family, road trip, go on holidays/travel, yoga at home, read. Really depends!

LSSG · 25/03/2023 14:34

Ferry the kids about, swim, the park, bikes, beach in summer, get coffee, cook and eat nice meals at home in the evenings.

Upsywavy · 25/03/2023 14:40

DS had rugby first thing Saturday morning so I take him there as me and some of the other mums have a nice catch up whilst they play, then DH meets us after and we usually go to a cafe for a coffee and maybe some cake.

Then the afternoon depends, I like to go to the gym or for a swim and then head back and spend time as a family go to a NT place or something before having a takeaw- me and DH then watch a film when DS is in bed. Sunday is my lie in day and generally slower pace- usually a walk or cycle somewhere and some bits around the house.

Unicornsaregreat · 25/03/2023 14:41

What are your interests?

When I’m not doing stuff with my daughter, I’m normally doing sport - cycling or running.

I also like reading, cooking, doing my garden, walking, sewing, writing, sleeping, seeing friends, films, browsing second hand shops

GerronBuzanDoThaWomwok · 25/03/2023 14:51

My imaginary weekend:
clean the house when I finish early on Friday, wash gym kits and uniforms, life admin, unwind and relax in a calm, clean house, potter upstairs, write, think...
Saturday: day trips, watching the sea, bookshops, out and about not spending but people watching, family dinner at home, netflix
Sunday: church, family walk/explore, quiet alone time for me, have already done everything for the week ahead, so early night, read in bed and don't worry about the new week

So far:
Friday
came in, spent the last money in the house on a meal deal as there was nothing to eat, went to bed, got up at 8pm, burnt oven chips and fish disaster, Mumsnet, bed
Today
Up at 5.30am but stayed in bed til 11am, bit of washing up, soup and cheap sandwiches, one load of washing, will soon be having fortifying mugs of tea, making lists and wondering when my life became such a let down, and a plan to change everything !

NancyJoan · 25/03/2023 14:57

Pottering, mostly. Cleaning, tidying, sorting the build up of clutter from the week. Usually go out for lunch on a Saturday, often meet a friend for coffee on Sunday morning. My kids are teens, so don’t need much input apart from lifts/money. Cinema tends to be a week night thing.

Pourmeanotherwine · 25/03/2023 15:02

Today I had a bit of a lie in, then breakfast. Bit of gardening, then a walk around local docks and lunch out. I've got back and put some ingredients in the slow cooker for a vegan tagine ( I'm not vegan, but DD is and is home from uni for Easter). This afternoon I might go to the local garden centre ( 5 mins walk) for some plants to go in my pots, or I might just read my book.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/03/2023 17:08

Today I haven't stopped! Went to SlimmingWorld, then came home and had quick breakfast. Walked to the nail salon and had them done. Walked home, took DD to hobby craft and also had to go to b&q for paint. Came back and then went to drum lesson. Then took dd to buy a present for my mum! Tomorrow I'm taking my mum for afternoon tea in my home town and DH has a gig.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 25/03/2023 17:09

Next weekend I'll be painting as too knackered to do it now lol

FrankandWalters · 25/03/2023 17:18

Today DH is working away, so I bought vegetables at the farmers’ market (v cheap), met my sister for a coffee with my DS, then we met some other friends at an anti-racism march. Tomorrow I’m going to climb a mountain with friends if the weather holds. If not, I have free tickets to a Spanish film and will go for a run, also take DS and his friends to an outdoor event. Other weekends, I visit friends in other parts of the country. Sometimes I go with DH when he works abroad. We’re skint, so it has to be cheap.

C1239 · 25/03/2023 17:50

How does everyone have the energy to have such busy weekends?! Your weekends sound much more exciting than mine!

Yoyo2021 · 25/03/2023 17:56

We do literally nothing. I work long hours and single parent to ten year old.

Saturday - slept in and still in our pjs. Watch movies and child games

Sunday - go for a short walk to town. Go to the barbers, my child chooses a book from the shop or magazine and maybe have a hot chocolate.

I then come back and blitz the house.

I then cook a roast or something warming.

Used to do so much but due to col we can’t have it all so I save money now really for annual leave.

Lcb123 · 25/03/2023 17:58

Personally can’t think of anything worse than going to a shopping centre! But hey - today we went to a national trust place had a walk and lunch. Usually see friends for walk/food/drinks, or DIY, or house work, or weekends away, going to weddings etc.

Architectahoy · 25/03/2023 18:38

Typical weekend here is

Swimming lessons for DC,
Walk on the beach
Visit the city (more like a deprived large town!) for a coffee
Bike rides / skating or scooting in the park.
Try and visit 1 set of grandparents (we have 4 sets to visit on rotation!)
Laundry
Mowing
Boardgames
Film
Watch David Attenborough / something chill on a Sunday night
Sunday night bath

Every other weekend we choose somewhere new to visit in the county. We live in a tourist destination but its quite a sad / poor place so we try and be a tourist for a few hours. And buy ice creams, sandwiches, coffees to help the local economy. Just a little something something. I try and spend £12 ish to cover NMW staff for an hour. 😳 (someone on the local radio said this was a good way to support local places)

We don't even have shopping centres here. But when I lived in London I went to shopping centres because it was dry and it would towards my 12,000 daily step goal 😂

Cadburysucks · 25/03/2023 18:42

So many shops have shut that going to a shopping centre is really boring, before you could browse and get some retail therapy even buying some basics, and then having something to eat at the in store cafe/restaurant like Debenhams/BHS. Weekends are now spent at home making some simple lunch watching tv going for walks and shopping locally.

QuintanaRoo · 25/03/2023 18:51

Watch netflix
go to the gym
walking
cycling
reading
meet friends for lunch (coffee shop, type lunch so on the cheaper side of eating out)
