250£/week on groceries for 2 people!

How crazy is it? We buy everything organic and don't have ready meals.
Strictly speaking, we can afford it (i.e. we still can save some money at the end of the month), yet it seems to me quite of a huge amount. Unfortunately it's not something I can control, since she manages the orders. I read that 2 people should spend around 100 a week!
We are in London.
Note: the bill also include shower gel, toilet rolls. etc...

I wouldn't say it's crazy if you can afford it.. it seems like a quality over quantity thing. If you want to challenge your other half on it why not look at parts of the shop where you could suggest cheaper alternatives and offer a constructive solution?

Genuine question, if you can afford it and £250 a week or £125 per person is affordable for you for 7 days worth of food, then what is the point of your post other than to humble brag how much you can spend on food in the middle of a cost of living crisis?

Well OP seems to disagree with the decision to spend this much, so maybe the thread is to show their partner/ significant other how ridiculous people think it is.

i,e, the purpose of the thread is to resolve a dispute.

BertieBotts · 13/03/2023 18:19

That does seem like a lot. We spend around €120 per week for a family of 5.

Basically to gather data points. I was hoping to get replies like "it's high, but not too bad". The fact that half of the post are even irritated by how high is it is quite telling.

BTW you can "afford" 250£ a week + rent with around 2500£/month, which is around what 2 people with minimum wage (WITHOUT KIDS) could afford. Obviously they can't save for retirement or have holidays, hence my worries.

Does that include eating out? Take out coffees ext

uhOhOP · 13/03/2023 18:20

Uh oh, OP. "Tone deaf", "stealth boast"... If you are displeased about spending £250 per week on groceries for two people, you'd best start shopping elsewhere. Although, you partly shop at Ocado, which I can't imagine is particularly costly, so it must be what you are buying, rather than where you are shopping. How many organic joints of beef must you be buying from Abel & Cole every week?!

gamerchick · 13/03/2023 18:20

Kinda want to see your shopping list tbh.

leafygarden · 13/03/2023 18:22

£250 per week for 2 people is kicking arse - organic or not.

OP, maybe you could give us a list of all the things you've bought in a week, with the prices, and we can tell you if it is a silly amount to spend every week.

If you're earning enough then it's not 'crazy', it's all relative.

What you put into your body is one of the most important things you can choose to spend money on.

People prioritise different things.

I do earn enough to spend £250 a week on shopping (6 figure income household)

It’s fricking crazy for 2 people.

Anoooshka · 13/03/2023 18:24

That sounds like a lot of money to me. Are you throwing a lot of food away?

But you can have a healthy diet for a lot less than £250 pw per couple.

It's madness to spend that money if you can't afford to contribute to a pension or go on holiday.

Moneypanicker · 13/03/2023 18:26

OMG! only on here would this be seen as a brag post. It is quite a lot but its so easy to spend that much especially if you don't really have a budget. Try reducing by £10 a week so it's not all or nothing.

Immychops · 13/03/2023 18:26

We spend about £200 a week if you include a takeaway and our gousto box. The rest Tesco.

Then again we're a family of 3.

gogohmm · 13/03/2023 18:26

That's crazy. I bought hello fresh this week, not the cheapest way to cook, and it was £52 for 5 meals for the 3 of us. Dp did a supermarket run for milk, bread, sandwiches fillings, juice and cereal etc - came to £29 and that included a bottle of wine

We were out Saturday and Sunday I admit

EggyBreads · 13/03/2023 18:28

We spend £170 a week two adults and one 7 year old. Not including takeaways. I don't think your amount is excessive if you're eating well, with organic produce.

Gleeisweird · 13/03/2023 18:28

250 is expensive, far more then I spend for 2. But if you can afford it 🤷‍♀️ if you want to cut down, downgrade to cheap brands of food/supermakets, move away from Abel and Cole to just supermarket buys.

BounceyB · 13/03/2023 18:29

FrogOnSaturn · 13/03/2023 18:13

Ocado and Abel&Cole.

Abel&Cole is the most expensive way of shopping. I used to order from similar and when I stopped I saved £60 a month. I now do £100 pw for me, two kids and a dog. I shop between Waitrose and Tesco. If you want her to cut down I think you need to be prepared to do some of the shopping yourself.

PandasAreUseless · 13/03/2023 18:31

Who is 'she'?

Vitriolinsanity · 13/03/2023 18:31

Well it's 35 quid a day. Even a fresh chicken from Ocado only costs about £7, two steaks about £8.

Do you both work from home so breakfast, lunch etc included or is that just evening meals.

holierthanthou73 · 13/03/2023 18:32

Sainsburys £50/60pw 1 adult & 2 cats including toiletries/cleaning.

RaininSummer · 13/03/2023 18:32

I actually can't figure out how I could come close to spending that unless I purchased lobster, champagne and fillet steak each week. I reckon I spend 60 for several weeks running and than have a big freezer and cupboard shop at about 100 every 4 to 6 weeks. So, to me it's a fortune but if you can afford it and enjoy expensive food it's not a problem.

Nsky62 · 13/03/2023 18:32

Seems excessive, def, use waitrose not the cheapest, can you find local stuff and not organic, that is where some of your money goes

Wheretheskyisblue · 13/03/2023 18:33

Organic food is expensive, easily twice the price of non organic and more for meat. If you eat a lot of meat, fish or expensive prepared items I can see how you can get to £250.

Yeah, more or less. It's a point that has been debated over and over, apparently we can't get the bill down and at this point even talking about it creates tension. I can't really forbid my parner from buying fancy organic stuff. Maybe I can refuse to eat it. :-)
