Just received the usual mid contract price increase from them.
We don't have a huge bundle with them, but the increase will be £15 per month.
Mid contract changes by them absolutely boil my piss, so I'll leave it until my blood pressure stabilises, so the poor soul on the other end of the phone is spared my wrath.

We cancelled the TV bit and kept broadband and got a Firestick instead.

SomePeopleAreJustBloodyStupid · 17/03/2023 09:13

Same here. I've got broadband and landline with VM, pay £33 a month. They said they're putting it up to £56 in May, even though my contract doesn't end until September. I'm going to fuck them off before May.

KeHuyWinner · 17/03/2023 09:16

I was paying £72 a month and received an email saying it was going up by £12 per month. I called them and said I was going to move to Sky and I got 18 mths at £54 a month. That's the first time I've done that though and have been with them for over a decade so think that made a difference.

TurquoiseDress · 17/03/2023 09:30

Yes we got the email a few weeks ago!Angry

Contract doesn't end til Feb 2024

Need to get on the case to do something about it

Forwarded the email to DH about it but he's said/done nothing (I deal with ALL the admin & bills in our home- otherwise nothing would get paid!Confused)

This is very frustrating

I thought we were safe from price rises for another 12 months Angry

Toddlerteaplease · 17/03/2023 09:38

I went into the EE shop and said I was going to cancel, the (useless) bloke said they couldn't do anything. Which I doubt so will have another go. Virgin offered me a good deal but they aren't reliable from what I've heard.

Floppyelf · 17/03/2023 09:41

What on earth? Why are people paying so much? I’m on the new £26 broadband at 125mb speed. You don’t need to pay for TV. With Iplayer, ITV player, c4 apps you get all your usual programmes and then you can get netflix or prime for any top up series. You don’t need a landline anymore. I cancelled mine years ago.

RoxTen · 17/03/2023 09:49

Prices for new customers are often much lower than for existing customers.

We don't have a landline (i.e. physically don't have a connection to the house) so we're fairly limited for options.

WinterMusings · 17/03/2023 10:02

Kitkatandcoffee · 17/03/2023 09:05

If you get a newer tv. You can watch the apprentice etc on catch up at a time to suit you. You don’t need to record it. Same with all the channels you can watch what you want when you want. My mum and dad in their 80s love it.

@Kitkatandcoffee thanks. I think I can watch Iplayer like that on my iPad?!

I guess part of it is that I like the list of recorded stuff, setting series link & wish list so it picks up stuff I don't realise is on. So for example I might wish list 'kit Kat' and it'll pick up everything you're in. Then it's just there to be watched.

I'm renovating at the moment, at some stage after that I'll need to get a new TV (waiting until there aren't inches of building dust!!) I guess I'll be able to use prime properly then & sign up to say Netflix, but I'm not sure what else I'll have access to?!

whereeverilaymycat · 17/03/2023 12:23

Thank you for everyone that posted tips on here. I'd received the letter and assumed it was cancel or suck it up. I'm now off to try and negotiate the extra charge away.

Radiodread · 20/03/2023 23:12

If you do find yourself having to switch, then see what cashback deals are on offer with eg topcashback.co.uk or directly with other broadband suppliers . Sometimes it can be quite a lot, £100 or more.

Move providers. And call up the retention team if you’re an existing customer and give notice that you’re going to a rival. They will match you with a new customer offer.

RoxTen · 21/03/2023 09:39

The point is we can't move providers as virgin are the only provider in our area that doesn't require a phone line into the house (i.e. the physical cable, I'm not talking about landline rental).

I've phoned retentions previously and whilst I've got a reduced price that way I've never got near the new customer offers.

monsterradeliciosa · 21/03/2023 09:41

Just order a new provider who offer a cheaper plan. Virgin will call and reduce your price before the switch.

RoxTen · 21/03/2023 09:56

We can't place an order with a new provider as we don't have a phone line!

monsterradeliciosa · 21/03/2023 10:18

RoxTen · 21/03/2023 09:56

If you needed a phone line to get the internet you'd have it already?

I don't use a landline and Virgin said they wouldn't bother installing my phone line at the time. That's been later contradicted but who knows, thing is you can order a new provider, they just set up to instal a phone line if needed. Then Virgin get notification you've switched and call you to reduce their price.

You aren't really switching.

RoxTen · 21/03/2023 10:23

We have virgin cable into the house. They don't share their cabling with any other provider so to go with someone else would involve the installation of a line.
Last time I looked BT/openreach wanted 140 up front to install the line (which every other provider other than virgin uses), you got some of this refunded when you took out a package but that's not helpful if you don't intend to take out the package!

monsterradeliciosa · 21/03/2023 10:24

Try Sky
Just order Sky and virgin will call you

moggle · 21/03/2023 11:00

This made me get my ripped up letter from virgin out of the recycling bin to double check! We started a contract feb 2022 and it runs til august 2023. £24 for broadband. My letter says the prices are increasing but it won’t affect me until my current price offer ends. Anyway I will tape it up and keep it safe just in case…

WinterMusings · 10/03/2023 14:09

my head hurts just thinking about it.

I have talk talk for broadband & Virgin for TV

last year I rang to get a package with Virgin, but it wasn't any cheaper so I left it.

I have the XL package with Virgin, not because I watch much TV, but because if the channels it has.

I like my Tivo box, I'm comfortable with the recording system so I don't really want to change to sky.

but it's just getting too ridiculous between them.

I think I need to buy a recording box & use now (or whatever) & maybe Netflix?! I like to have a recording box so I can watch things like 'The Apprentice' when I can as I can't always watch when it's on. Also because there are things I want to watch but not when they're in & I'm not sure where they are on if I only have 'now' or one of the other options?!

how much hassle (what do they need to do) to change talk talk broadband to Virgin/sky/any other provider?

I'm starting to feel 'old people' when I've always been the one the oldies come to for help.

it's horrible!!

Can you not watch Apprentice etc on the iPlayer app? I have (rubbish) Virgin for wifi/phone but Roku boxes which have Nowtv. I'm also looking to get out of Virgin as pay £47 pm and £11.99 Netflix, £79 pa Amazon Prime for Prime & Paramount. Way too much expenditure.

KleineDracheKokosnuss · 21/03/2023 11:19

We just ditched sky broadband in favour of Vodafone due to the mid contract increase. Sadly we couldn’t cancel for free (they charged £35) but Vodafone offered both a cheaper payment per month and £100 Amazon vouchers. So we win overall.

@NurseCranesRolodex

thanks.

I need to look at it all. I have a very old TV, it takes 5 minutes to decide to respond to the red button. It's one of the old 2 men to carry it style! It's idea if 'smart' is having a remote!

it was second hand when zi got it 13 years ago, the picture is great & im rather attached to it. So, it's staying until it decides it's had enough! 🤣I'm not entirely sure, it might take ok to now Tv/Netflix/whatever?!

more so than watching current stuff (like the apprentice) I love that I have set up my wish list to various programs/presenters/actors to record when they're on, so there's just stuff there to watch.

I guess the TV isn't the only 🦕 residing here.
😂🤣
