Virgin broadband increase again so fed up

hi all,im so fed up with fixed Virgin broadband (1yr to go) for £33 a month just broadband and said could not go up in that time ,no they said but it seems yes it could as just got a email saying it's going up £7 a month so £40 a month,my fault i should of checked for myself i know

That's ridiculous i have been with them years as we are heavy users and never have a problem with it and every year i phone up and get a deal on it,i think this one im on i had it cheap for 6 mths then the £33 pound contract for 18mths

so regardless of provider is your just broadband going up at such a large rate?

also my 02 is going up by 20% a month good job my dd is for £14 those with high amounts will really feel it

seems like there are still going to be increases on lots of things it seem, all seems to be about April so more belt tightening it seems

My BT broadband will be going up in April by quite a bit like other providers but my Tesco Mobile isn't so at least that is something good

RedRiverShore3 · 25/02/2023 16:57

BT did this once and put it up mid contract but because it breaks the contract you can leave without penalty, with the RPI + 3.9% one you can't leave without penalty as that is in the contract they can do this. OP can leave though because of the £7 raise in May but there if probably a window when you can do this

kingsleysbootlicker · 25/02/2023 16:59

@catskittens If it's Income Related ESA then you should be eligible. That's what I'm on and I'm signed up to BT's version

If you are with o2 and virgin you can get a dual provider deal. Pop into an o2 shop to discuss as they can do a better deal than the virgin call centre apparently.

longtompot · 25/02/2023 17:27

We are in the process of removing ourselves from Virgin media. We have bought a freesat box to replace the TiVo box, the landline which technically we don't use but do get gp calls on it, we are moving over to a SIP phone system for £3.50 a month. The next thing will be our mobiles and our email which is a big thing to move due to business. I think all we will have with them will be our mobile phones. We have been thinking about doing this for years but this latest price hike has pushed dh into actually looking into it and doing it.

(not sure how all my writing went italic, but hey Ho! )

toodlesofoodles · 25/02/2023 18:54

As far as I know Virgin don't have any minimum time frame from when you leave to when you rejoin, you could cancel and then sign up again as a "new" customer with promotional rates if you are a heavy user and they suit you OP? Although I'd speak to them first and see if they can do you a deal.

Every single provider has put their prices up by either RPI or CPI, it happens every year but obviously this year the RPI and CPI increases are higher than normal due to current factors.

lookeelikee · 25/02/2023 21:35

Virgin has a 60 days period between leaving and re-joining

Soapyspuds · 25/02/2023 22:19

You are supposed to phone up and threaten to leave. Then they should knock a few quid off.

catskittens · 25/02/2023 23:37

thanks to you all that replied,i had forgotten about them and 02
lots to get on with next week and will be using this thread to help

Plusnet unlimited fibre broad band, free landline UK calls evenings and weekends. £25 pm.

endofthelinefinally · 27/02/2023 08:22

No TV package though, but I just catch up online and use a couple of other free channels. That is more than enough for me - I don't have time to watch all the things I like the look of as it is.

catskittens · 27/02/2023 08:38

endofthelinefinally thats good im happy with mine as were heavy users and never have a problem with it and didnt fancy all the hassle with swapping, the call took 2 mins straight through

Wait, what?!
I've been with VM for years and they've never increased the price during a contract. Are you sure you're in contract?!

They increase them every year in spring when the index is updated.

Mine has gone up 33% 😳

I've just checked my Ts and Cs and there's nothing in there about a guaranteed price rise every April. It does say that they can change their prices at any time but that I'd be free to cancel the contract if they do that.

PerfectYear321 · 28/02/2023 19:34

Maybe people are on different types of deal

yeah in contract otherwise would be £52

they have now sent the details this is how mine works they are saying they are charging me £26 a month for 12 months no mention of the £7 increase so im guessing the £7 will still be added making it back to £33 a month

@catskittens just trying to catch up here. Did you call vm and get your own price? And what was your tactic.

i just phoned VM and said i was not happy with the increased straight away they offered me the reduction It was all very easy i think they have had many calls regarding the increase

it was so quick and easy i think they have been advised to offer this as when i have phoned them before you have to battle to get a deal

all very straight forward if you're having the same problem

OP posts:
Cassiusclay · 03/03/2023 22:59

They tried to put my fee up 50% this time. Admittedly I was already on a pretty good deal but 50% of anything is, on principle, ridiculous so I called them, put on a sad voice saying I couldn't afford it and could they please quote to reduce my package. Took a couple of calls but they waived the increase altogether. I don't use the phone line and since we bought a firestick a few months ago we rarely use the TV package either.

It's still occasionally shitty internet but I get speed increases due to having O2 contracts too and I couldn't get anywhere near the same speed for that price elsewhere.

lieselotte · 04/03/2023 12:25

Our Virgin Media was going up by £11 a month so I phoned and was offered a £5.50 a month reduction via the automated system, which saved me having around on the phone for ages.

Our Plusnet was going up by £4.50 a month but I was coming to the end of my contract so signed up for a faster deal which was about £4 a month less.

We have two lines as we both work from home and need to be able to rely on them.

You shouldn't need to haggle though, it should be fair from the outset. Plusnet made it much easier, by offering two packages on their website at renewal. Virgin should do the same. You should be able cancel and downgrade online as far as I am concerned.
