Virgin broadband increase again so fed up

hi all,im so fed up with fixed Virgin broadband (1yr to go) for £33 a month just broadband and said could not go up in that time ,no they said but it seems yes it could as just got a email saying it's going up £7 a month so £40 a month,my fault i should of checked for myself i know

That's ridiculous i have been with them years as we are heavy users and never have a problem with it and every year i phone up and get a deal on it,i think this one im on i had it cheap for 6 mths then the £33 pound contract for 18mths

so regardless of provider is your just broadband going up at such a large rate?

also my 02 is going up by 20% a month good job my dd is for £14 those with high amounts will really feel it

seems like there are still going to be increases on lots of things it seem, all seems to be about April so more belt tightening it seems

I called up virgin to cancel as I found a better deal elsewhere, they then offered a substantially reduced price for the core service I actually wanted, did take about 45 mins on the phone though.

Augend23 · 25/02/2023 15:01

I'm pretty sure that high an increase means you aren't bound into your contract any more:

www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/2023/january/virgin-media-broadband-tv-phone-price-hikes-2023/

Not sure if it will scramble the link as Mumsnet seems to hate MSE links. I'll try again if so.

BabsDylan · 25/02/2023 15:02

I finally left them last year, the speed alone was no way near what they said it should be.

I’ve changed to community fibre,£25 a month for 1000mps! They’re only London based however.

Blingstar · 25/02/2023 15:07

Yes it really pisses me off that they are able to do this when you are in a contract. We are also increasing by 7 a month even though we are supposed to be on a deal till October.

Yet if I wanted to leave that deal I'd need to pay a penalty! How can this be fair? They should be forced to honour the contract.

If anybody can explain the implications of the new virgin tariff from next year which is Retail Price index plus 3.9% or something like this. I'd be grateful. Is that going to be a massive increase too?

Dondigdu · 25/02/2023 15:12

I was struggling with my virgin media payments, I rang up to cancel my contract as it had ended anyway and was just rolling over

Turns out they do a deal for people on universal credit for £12.50 a month, or £12 I cant remember which,

They also credited my account the last 3 payments I'd made which was nice of them

DeathMetalMum · 25/02/2023 15:14

It's linked to inflation, many contracted services have always had this in the contract, but as inflation has been low for so long it's been a fairly low increase.

I think most are down to the level of inflation in January of each year. So while there will be an increase its likely to be lower next year. I only entered into a 12 month contract when renewing my broadband before Christmas in light of this, I think ours has increased by around £3/£4 a month.

UnaOfStormhold · 25/02/2023 15:17

I'm about to leave for this reason - there are a lot more people doing cable broadband now so there's better choice. Bit of a hassle but prices were getting crazy.

@Blingstar it's hard to predict at this point but there's a good chance next year's inflation rate should be a lot lower than this one - basically prices have been affected by the war in Ukraine and the impact on energy prices, but that's already baked into current prices so won't affect next year's inflation (hence why the PM's pledge to reduce inflation is meaningless).
More or less did a good podcast on this - think it's this one www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0dyk8jg

Just call them up . They after a bit if tooing and froing agreed to keep me at £30 per month without the increase. Even the automated phone call person offered me 3.50 off straight away but stayed on and haggled further. It helps if you know their current offer for new customers

Bullshot · 25/02/2023 15:27

Are you sure it increases immediately? I just read my email which reads as if mine won't go up until the end of my current promotional package?

"However, this 2023 price increase won't affect you until your current price offer ends. The full price of your package will then increase by £7.00 a month, subject to the new pricing terms referred to below. If you'd like to check when your offer ends, please refer to your bill"

It's a huge percentage increase seeing as we only pay £25 per month anyway... 😮

sarahd269 · 25/02/2023 15:29

You can WhatsApp them so not left on hold to the phone for an age! I got £9 a month taken off my bill then going back up to what I was originally paying in May (when the price hike was due to take place) community.virginmedia.com/t5/Managing-Your-Account-Cable/What-s-app-contact-number-for-Virgin-Media/m-p/5106135

If you’re getting income based jsa it counts as a qualifying benefit. I’m not sure about virgin but by does a unlimited fibre option for £20 a month versus £15 a month for copper.

lookeelikee · 25/02/2023 15:37

I've just binned off virgin for all the packages and just want broadband.

I've requested the same rate as new customers as I do not understand their rationale when a loyal customer of decades gets ripped off!!

We're writing to tell you about some changes that'll affect your package price, our services, and the way our price rises will work from 2024 onwards. Please make sure you read this email carefully.

As you can probably imagine, with costs like energy bills rising fast, our running costs are increasing too. So to make sure we can keep giving you the quality of service you expect from us, the price of your package will go up by £7.00 a month from 1st May 2023.

If you’re not happy with this or any of the other changes announced in this email, you can change or cancel your package. For more information, please scroll to the bottom of this email.

We're changing our pricing terms
Currently, we usually change our prices each year, and will write to let you know how much any increase is and provide you with a right to cancel.

From April 2024, we are changing our approach so any price rise to your package is always made at the same time every year, and it’ll be linked to the Retail Price Index (RPI) rate of inflation plus an additional 3.9%, so the amount of any increase will be clearer, sooner. To do this, we need to change our terms and conditions. The key features of these new rules are:

The monthly subscription price for your services will increase every April starting from April 2024.

The amount the monthly price will increase will be RPI rate of inflation plus an additional 3.9%. This increase will apply to the monthly subscription price you're paying at the time and also (if applicable) to the monthly price payable after subsequent expiry of any applicable offer or discount.

It’s ridiculous. I’m with sky, I joined nearly 18 months ago. I got a deal for £39 but not once have I paid just £39 it’s always been £46 every month even though that was not my contract.
Just this morning I called and cancelled with them, I have just one month of paying them before the contract ends. I will pay for just the internet now at £28 a month.
I had to ring sky twice this morning as the first guy actually tried to get me to pay £60 a month from when the contract ends.
If you go into the contract they should honour that and not increase the price.

catskittens · 25/02/2023 16:10

well that will be me phoning them next week and looking around at other providers,it's a shame as we are heavy users and never any problems but needs must

will update if i get anywhere

Ours is Virgin and going up to £51 a month....internet only...i despair ringing them up, our initial contract was taken out by a friend who stayed here years ago and he is now a missing person and they refuse to talk to us about the account as not in our name, nobody i speak to understands the situation, its horrendous.....we will switch to community fibre soon.

Mybestusername · 25/02/2023 16:27

Definitely call them - mine was due to increase by £9 per month - they have given me a £7.80 discount until next year. When that runs out I'll call them again. They rely on people not bothering to call up and just paying every price increase.

Ilovetocrochet · 25/02/2023 16:36

It’s not just Virgin who are putting up their prices from April, all broadband and mobile phone users are doing the same according to Martin Lewis. I had the same letter from Virgin but as I am out of contract my payments will increase from April. I also had a very similar letter quoting the retail price index plus 3% from Plusnet who I use for my SIM only mobile phone.

Lasy year when I contacted Virgin to complain about the price increase, they refused to negotiate, just told me to leave! Unfortunately, at that time, Virgin were the cheapest provider for TV and broadband in my area - can’t have Sky as no where to put a dish and BT are very unreliable.

Im now looking at getting rid of the TV package and just using Catchup to watch programmes that I miss, I will be trying to get the broadband for the same as new customers though!
