Tend to do my shopping between Asda and Aldi.
Was going to do an online shop at Asda and priced it up to £101.
Decided to go to Aldi and bought the same and it was £93 so wasn't much difference. I also had to factor in petrol to get there.

Made me realise that there aren't really any 'cheap' supermarkets anymore. Looks like we are all eating less.

Was hoping to have a holiday this year but no chance. We have good money coming in and still can't afford luxuries.
We used to eat out, holidays and buy clothes.
It has gone crazy and just can't see an end to it!
By the time we have paid bills and food hardly anything left. Trying to be positive and look at what I have- not what we haven't but think tough times are going to be here for a while.

It is tough. My salary doesn't stretch as far as it did. Waitrose is still better value. Better quality (but I know people have different views). More veg and lentil stews and soups - cheaper and better for you.
It's the energy bill that's the real killer for me though.

Cuddlycheetah · 17/02/2023 20:12

I get the best Waitrose coupons. I love it. Usually 50p off things I love buying. So they're very welcome.

Today I took full advantage of Boots 3 for 2 on vitamins. I managed to get DC vitamins, Perimenopause Vitamins and then Floradix for free!! Was so pleased as I can't usually afford all 3 and Floradix is amazing for fatigue.

I live alone, don't drink or smoke like chocolate etc. Follow gluten free diet. Prices are astronomical.now and shrunkflation too🙄when will it end? I used to buy what I wanted, now I have a conversation with myself andsay,I'm.not paying that🙄

I went to Boots to get a prescription and thought I'd pick up some toothpaste...the cheapest option was a Colgate pump...£6.00!!

Boots is expensive!

Hedjwitch · 17/02/2023 20:38

2.10 for bottle of Schweppes tonic inocal co op. Yes its a luxury item but we cant afford to go out and have a drink so its a wee treat. Just have to drink the gin neat 😉

BrendaWearingBaffies · 17/02/2023 20:41

No holiday this year for us either. Only day trips here and there. I get it. It's rubbish isn't it.

Branster · 17/02/2023 20:47

Everything seems to shrink in size but priced the same or more than before. Even Airwaves chewing gum packets appear to be shorter. Toilet paper size has started shrinking during lockdown. Bacon is sooo thin nowadays, from all supermarkets, it's like parma ham almost.
I'd like to see the profits for all major supermarkets. They stayed open during lockdowns and did a roaring trade. Prices go up at the first opportunity. And I'm still not convinced all price increases are due to higher energy costs and the war in Ukraine. Supermarkets are definitely doing really well compared to other retailers and industries.

Shallysally · 17/02/2023 20:47

Asda have extended the Blue Light card offer until March. 10% off in store.

B&M or home bargains. Amazon too

I'm a real bargain hunter so I constantly check prices. Love the dove cream max deo but it's about a fiver in boots. Amazon sell it in bulk and it works out as £3 each
One tip I would give is if it's cheap, buy it. Because even if you don't need the toothpaste that week, it will get used and you won't have to pay full price
Aldi sensitive toothpaste is good too

Orangesandlemons77 · 17/02/2023 20:50

I get toothpaste in bulk on Amazon now, it's cheaper

Hedjwitch · 17/02/2023 20:51

You can save a lot on cleaning products by using refill tabs from companies like SMOL and others. As you are mostly paying for the bottle, the water and the transport it makes sense to reuse if you can. Bar soap is cheaper than shower gel and handwash.
Foodwise I make a lot of soup and bulk it up with lentils or orzo pasta. This does me for lunches in work along with a banana or apple. We eat about 60% non meat meals now and very rarely eat fish. 4 adults now at home but i think our bill isnt too bad. Dont buy any biscuits or crisps, but do buy alcohol. Grow my own herbs for cooking and teas ( windowsill is fine). Dont buy kitchen paper or wet wipes, cloths are fine. It's amazing how you can save money by being a bit greener without having to resort to knitting your own leg hair to make socks or other perceived extremes

I’ve heard toilet roll is cheaper to buy in bulk on Amazon too, although I only heard this today and need to check it out. Normally shop in Aldi.

Nat6999 · 17/02/2023 21:19

I shop at Ocado & Morrison's, I do one shop at Morrison's & buy nearly all my meat, basic veg & as much as I can from their other stuff then do an Ocado shop for the things I can only buy from there. For both I go through the offers to see what I can buy on offer first, I also only use delivery slots that are free if I can, that saves me at least £10 a month before I start shopping. I also constantly compare branded stuff between the two supermarkets.

NCTDN · 17/02/2023 21:42

I think Morrisons is more expensive than anywhere atm.

Chowtime · 17/02/2023 21:47

I had weight loss surgery at the end of the last for £3000k in turkey.

I'll easily save that much on food in six months in the UK.

RaininSummer · 17/02/2023 22:20

Colgate is about 99p in Lidl.

MintJulia · 18/02/2023 00:43

I've adapted what I buy to keep the costs down to £50 a week for two of us.

I make lots of veggie soups with soup mix or pearl barley, for lunches
I buy 25lb bags of potatoes from a local farm and store them in the garage.
I buy frozen hake in bulk to make chowders
Whenever I make a cake, I make two and swap the extra one for a dozen eggs from a neighbour's chickens.
This summer's tomato, pepper, cucumber & courgette plants are already sprouting in the greenhouse.

I seem to spend my whole time looking for ways to make wholesome food less expensive. 🙁

notangelinajolie · 18/02/2023 01:03

Did the weekly shop at Asda because DH said it would be cheaper than Sainsbury’s. It was not, well not for the stuff we buy.
I also gave Aldi a try. I used to shop there all the time but stoped when my local store closed and moved to bigger premises. Not shopped there for a good 18 months. It used to be impossible to spend more than £60 on our weekly food shop. Our recent visit cost us £90 and we still needed to go to another supermarket for stuff that wasn’t on the shelves - nothing special, cat food, cucumber and potatoes.

I’m sticking with Sainsbury’s - at least they have everything you want.

newfriend05 · 18/02/2023 02:34

@IloveRickyGervaisAndHisTeeth can't you claim pension credit , or claim carers allowance

InelegantAndWild · 18/02/2023 02:51

It is fucking awful. No doubt about it. And we seem to just be accepting it. Some of it is driven by external factors but some of it is blatant profiteering - eg there's no way that fucking bisto now costs five times as much to make now as it did in 2020.

Plus, the most blatant profiteering is from the energy companies. Yes British gas isn't centrica BUT it's two arms of the same company. And all the other companies likewise. They are literally buying and selling between themselves. That is what sets the energy prices. It's not some abstract formulation. Suppliers are also wholesalers. It is the very definition of a bent market.

Anyway here are my top tips:

  • m&s for food shopping. They are actually consistently cheaper for a greater amount of basics than anyone else, if your basic shop is spread wide enough. And you don't have to have a fucking clubcard.
  • get out on the streets and protest. At every opportunity. We all work fucking hard and we are getting shafted. A good riot keeps you warm. All that running about? Brilliant.
LadyJ2023 · 18/02/2023 03:06

I got asda delivery's for years but for the last year and a half I moved to tesco on recommendation of family. For the first few shops I compared my list to asdas and everyrime tesco was quite a bit cheaper so i never went back to asda

beguilingeyes · 18/02/2023 05:04

I'm supposed to be retired, but I'm terrified of my energy bills, as well as everything else.
I can't see any end to it.

Porkyporkchop · 18/02/2023 05:14

Adrelaxzz · 17/02/2023 08:12

It will the chicken I bought last week was double the year before. Could even look at lamb, beef or pork.

I have found some vegan and veggie food is so pricey! Have a dairy free dd, and the costs with alternative stuff is ridiculous

It's shit. I went to Aldi yesterday. Just bought some bits that fitted under my buggy, so i didn't even need a bag or car the amount of stuff was that little. £30. Ffs.
