Eon sudden increase?

Watto1 · 15/02/2023 18:43

Yesterday I received and email from Eon asking if I wanted to sign up for their ‘Energy Saving Events’ ie the scheme where you can save money by not using energy at peak times on certain days.

I thought this seemed like a good idea so I signed up. As part of the sign up process, my smart meter had to be changed remotely so that it would send readings every 30 minutes. However, my energy usage appears to have doubled overnight! I usually spend £3-£4 per day according to my smart meter. Today it’s already over £8. I haven’t done anything differently. I haven’t even put a wash on today. I’m shitting myself that I have more than doubled my bill by trying to make a saving. Has this happened to anyone else?

Did you read the T&Cs? Have you used energy as normal today?

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 15/02/2023 18:49

We are doing the saving sessions with EON but I don't think it's changed our prices. How strange

Watto1 · 15/02/2023 18:50

T&Cs say my tariff will not change and I’ve done nothing abnormal! In fact, we’ve probably used less energy than normal as dh (who usually works from home) has been in the office.

was your in house display showing the correct prices before? Mine is still showing the cheap gas prices of 3.7p or whatever, so I just mentally treble it or whatever.
maybe by doing the update, the IHD has actually just updated the unit prices rather than showing the old ones?

Watto1 · 15/02/2023 18:52

I’m hoping it’s a strange blip but will keep a close eye on it. I’m wondering if the meter update has buggered something up.

ChilliBandit · 15/02/2023 18:52

It may be the tariff was incorrectly showing on your meter before and is now showing actual usage. What did your actual bills work out as in average per day before the change.

Watto1 · 15/02/2023 18:54

I wonder if you are right @ZeroFucksGivenToday . To be honest, I have been thinking that the cost was a bit low considering the price rises. Bugger!

NewBootsAndRanty · 15/02/2023 18:57

Look at your usage in kwh, not cost.

PhotoDad · 15/02/2023 18:57

Sorry to say, @Watto1, but I think that @ZeroFucksGivenToday might be right. My EON meter hasn't shown the right electricity tariff for months. I contacted them and they said they couldn't fix it as we had an old smart meter (!). Gas is fine (for me).

Watto1 · 15/02/2023 19:08

I feel a bit daft now. I’ve been mentally patting myself on the back about my excellent cost saving efforts despite the price increases. I’m usually quite intelligent honestly!

OP posts:
Calmdown14 · 15/02/2023 19:16

What are you paying each month? Under £120 for both would be pretty low.

Is that what you've been paying or just what your smart meter displays?

Watto1 · 15/02/2023 19:52

Well, my last direct debit included the discount so ‘real’ bill £130. However, this has been the same for ages and eon hasn’t asked to increase it, so I assume I must have built up a large credit over the summer. I have been thinking it’s suspiciously low and that something is going awry somewhere. We are very careful with our energy usage though. 4 bedroom detached, 2 adults and two kids. I really need to get more on top of this.

OP posts:
PhotoDad · 15/02/2023 19:57

@Watto1 If you click through the settings on your display you should be able to find what tariff it thinks you're on, and you can then compare it to the real thing (which is probably around 30p/kWh of electricity and 10p/kWh of gas). Also, you can use their website to check the status of your account and give a reading to get back on track!

Watto1 · 15/02/2023 19:58

It’s on £9.82 for the day now! 74 kw. Think I’m going to hide the display unit in a cupboard Sad

OP posts:
Watto1 · 15/02/2023 20:00

Thanks @PhotoDad , I’ll have a play with it.

OP posts:
ChilliBandit · 15/02/2023 20:09

£9.82 for a 4 bed with 2 children is pretty good these days sadly. We are a three bed, 1 child, all appliances less than 4 years old, insulated as much as poss, use eco settings etc and we are £7-8 a day still in gas and electricity.

Watto1 · 15/02/2023 20:25

It’s so scary @ChilliBandit ☹️

I know @Watto1 😢

I’m with Octopus and I definitely can’t trust my smart meter. Sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes not at all for gas and then other times jumps from £2 to £8 in 5 mins. I’ve complained but they basically fob me off, strange it’s just been like this since October?

Is that the actual meter or the display unit?

DonnaDonna0 · 16/02/2023 08:20

The display unit.

TimeForMeToF1y · 16/02/2023 08:41

DonnaDonna0 · 16/02/2023 08:20

The display unit.

In that case you need to check the actual meter to know if you are being charged correctly

The display unit is a bit like a calculator working out the cost and showing what it thinks is the usage, it has no bearing on what your meter is reporting back and from what I read they can be unreliable

DonnaDonna0 · 16/02/2023 09:05

Yeah done all that and I’m reading my meter to keep it all accurate but my point is if you can’t trust or rely on the display what is the point in them for the consumer? Especially if it’s giving you incorrect info and misleading people, your better off without one.

Mine does the same but it’s a signal issue. My meters are in a cupboard, in a cupboard and there is a solid brick wall between the meters and the display so it’s a bit hit and miss.

I don't have an IHD - the one from my original supplier went kaput years ago, and octopus don't supply them if it's not their meter/is the old type (can't remember which applied).
I just keep an eye on my usage via the loop app. When I was on the SVR it was pretty accurate at measuring cost (I've since switched to a tracker tariff but it's still good for tracking usage in kwh though).
