Octopus tracker tariff

Someone posted about this the other day but I can't find it. Interested to find out more to take advantage of wholesale prices dropping. What are the risks? Do you have to keep an eye on the rates every day and avoid peak times? Has anyone switched and saved money?

It’s been corrected, panic over!

Floofydawg · 02/03/2023 08:11

How weird, wonder what happened. Have just messaged husband to tell him he can have the heating on today after all! (I'm out all day)

@Floofydawg could you kindly share the other website you use to track prices, our gas is showing zero on the app too

Floofydawg · 02/03/2023 08:35

This one. Filter by tracker tariff, and then area.

Haha I had just been setting up my electric radiator!

@Floofydawg thank you.

Phew!

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 02/03/2023 22:39

I think I’m on this tariff (we were transferred over from Bulb) but I’m confused about whether the unit price can still exceed the current price cap?

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/03/2023 22:53

from another thread

www.mumsnet.com/talk/cost_of_living/4736696-energy-prices-set-to-rise-another-40-percent?page=3
"you also get the energy price guarantee deduction. If prices go above roughly 34p per kWh for gas and 10.3p per for gas you will get the discount applied.

When the price goes ABOVE the price guarantee which is 34p per kWh ish for electricity and 10.3p per kWh for gas this discount is applied BUT it cannot be discounted below the EPG.

So the price can increase 33.43p above the EPG but you won't pay any more than you would have on the standard variable. If prices are below the EPG you just get a cheaper rate with no government discount."

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 02/03/2023 23:05

Thank you. It looks like the current rate is almost exactly the same as the price cap which confused me. Is this just a coincidence? Or is it showing as this because the current market value is actually above the price cap so I’m only being charged the EPG rate? Money supermarket etc seem to think I’m better off switching but I don’t see how anywhere else can be cheaper?

If you look at your tariff it should be called octopus tracker if you're on tracker.

If you're being charged close to the price cap you're likely to be on flexible octopus, which is the standard variable rate (assuming you're with Octopus at the moment).

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/03/2023 23:21

mysmartenergy.uk/Tracker/ has a liat of today's tracker prices - just select your region. They shouldn't vary wildly.

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/03/2023 23:23

Oops sorry wrong link - use mysmartenergy.uk/tracker

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/03/2023 23:24

Agh it keeps breaking - the bit after "uk/" should say 'tracker'

Coffeecoffeeinmytummy · 02/03/2023 23:39

Ok now I’m very confused! Lol. This is what it says. Same for gas.

NewBootsAndRanty · 02/03/2023 23:56

Ok this is what my gas tariff info looked like when I was on the standard variable rate/flexible octopus/price cap - I'm guessing it's just a tariff name for customers who have moved over from bulb and are still on the SVR.

When it says prices are based on wholesale costs, it doesn't mean they change daily - they're set every quarter.

This is my tracker info - it has a tracker gadget thing underneath the price bit.

Floofydawg · 03/03/2023 07:07

@NewBootsAndRanty I don't think you're on the tracker tariff which changes daily.

Thanks, super useful!

I signed up 1 month ago and my unit rates were 30% less on the tracker tariff rather than the Octopus standard variable.

Well worth getting on the waiting list for this one.

starpatch · 07/03/2023 18:02

Do you know how long the waiting list is please? My fix ends in June.....

Some people seemed to have been and to bypass the waiting list by phoning - there was a post a couple of weeks ago.
