Octopus tracker tariff

Someone posted about this the other day but I can't find it. Interested to find out more to take advantage of wholesale prices dropping. What are the risks? Do you have to keep an eye on the rates every day and avoid peak times? Has anyone switched and saved money?

We were with Bulb on a similar tracker. They used to inform us in advance if prices were going up or down, hoping Octopus do the same.

Floofydawg · 12/02/2023 18:12

Bump - anyone else?

Do you need to have a smart meter for a tracker rate?

It was me. I gave details how people could find me on TikTok where i have made videos on it and the thread was removed.

Any question ask I am like a geek and know just about everything on this tariff lol

No that is why its so great you dont need a smart meter, you can switch to another tariff at any time and its at least 20% cheaper than any other standard tariff at the mo. (excluding smart tariff which need EV etc)

sazzleevans · 13/02/2023 09:55

I have also made a tutorial on how to get the tracker tariff prices automatically sent to your iphone or ipad each day. You have to keep an eye on prices as they follow wholesale prices which can go up as well as down but i have a way of automating it so you get a notification each morning.

sazzleevans · 13/02/2023 09:57

On the SV you will have to wait until the summer to benefit from the wholesale prices we are seeing now. You will get these prices NOW on tracker tariff.

This is a good document just explaining how things will change etc with the price guarantee.

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/02/2023 10:00

I switched to it last week - at the moment I'm saving a quid or two a day vs the SVR.

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/02/2023 10:06

The rate you get charged is the same all day - it changes daily.

@sazzleevans helpfully answered a load of questions about it on this thread

We looked into changing to this rate, but we did the calculations based on our usage and we are still better off on our current rate, as you use most of our electricity overnight as we have a cheaper rate from midnight until 6am.

Yes, if you are not on an old cheap rate or a time-of-use tariff which reduces overnight and you can shift lots of electricity then it's a winner hands down especially for gas as there is no smart tariff for that and you don't need a smart meter.

I am thinking of switching when my fix expires in a month. At the moment it is saving me £8 a month on standing charges and we have low usage so not sure if it would be worthwhile any earlier.

Floofydawg · 13/02/2023 11:17

Thanks for the links @sazzleevans , I wonder why the thread was removed.

No there's no benefit.

heldup · 13/02/2023 12:19

When i go onto the octopus website it only gives me the flexible option. Is the tracker avaliable everywhere?

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/02/2023 12:22

I think you should be able to sign up here (I did it by email) @heldup

Floofydawg · 13/02/2023 12:36

Makes me wonder why more people aren't switching - seems like a no-brainer to me. I can't see a catch. Interesting that Octopus aren't promoting it though.

@Floofydawg

i should probably take a look, but I'm on BG Fixed Rate to Dec so I'm not sure it would be any better and I'm really struggling with brain fog that's more like brain concrete, and I just can't face it.

Manaslave18 · 13/02/2023 12:44

Is this the same as the flexible octopus tariff as that also claims to follow wholesale prices?

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/02/2023 12:47

Flexible octopus is the SVR isn't it?

sazzleevans · 13/02/2023 13:20

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/02/2023 12:47

Yes the flexible is really very unflexible at the moment its the standard variable. Flexible is comply different and at the mo 20% cheaper BUT this could go up and down.

Qqbank01 · 13/02/2023 23:48

i am with utility warehouse (not fixed) and the electric is 31.74, gas 9.8, anything i need to be aware if i switch to octopus tracker tariff? Checking rate everyday?
