Best value cat food

I have two cats and the cost of their food has increased loads over the last year. I downgraded from Sheba to Felix as good as it looks to Felix original and get 96 sachets for £25. They won’t eat food in gravy only jelly. Is this the most cost effective currently ?

It's much much cheaper to buy tins than sachets, also better environmentally as the tins are easily recyclable. Tins are 400g so 4 sachets equivalent. You can get a plastic reusable tin top so you can keep the open tin in the fridge or portion out into tupperware. We buy Lidl or Aldi tinned cat food, it's about 75p a tin and our large cat has a third of a tin plus a few biscuits a day. Butchers classic is another good, inexpensive tinned cat food and comes in packs of 6, you can choose gravy or jelly varieties in the 6 pack or buy a mixed pack of 12 (works out slightly cheaper).

Very few offers on Felix these days. Whiskas is cheaper. I bought a box of 80 sachets a few weeks ago.

Butchers Classic tins are good. 24 tins for around £17.50 from Jollyes, Ocado, The Range, Pets at Home. Made in Britain and all natural ingredients I think. I think vets recommend it as pretty decent food for the low price tag.

Our cat gets a 100g of wet food and 42g of bowl of Hills Science Plan biscuits per day. We buy him a big 10Kg bag of the stuff and he noshes his way through. He never gets bored of the biscuits and he's almost 15 and in fine fettle so they must be doing some good and it's pretty cost effective.

WombatChocolate · 11/02/2023 12:12

Pascoes is a brand of sachets that Tesco sell. They were cheaper than Tesco own.

Wilkos do a cheap own brand one.

However, all the supermarket own brand ones have risen substantially in price and aren’t much different to Felix etc now. The big packs seem to be your best bet. 48 pouches of supermarket brand can be had for less than £12

fizzyfood · 11/02/2023 22:21

Good quality dry cat food worked out cheaper for us.

Tygertiger · 11/02/2023 22:27

Felix and Whiskas are utter shite. Sorry, but in terms of ingredients it’s the cat equivalent of budget chicken nuggets. Switch to Butchers tins which are a similar price and actually one of the best quality brands you can buy.

Okunevo · 13/02/2023 07:22

I've just got some Butchers cans for the cats to try. They sell it in Sainsburys if you just want a six pack to start with. The wet food I have delivered has gone up to £8.50 for six so looking to change that. They have one meal of wet then good quality dry food.

gogohmm · 13/02/2023 07:25

Dcat eats dry food from lidl, its cheap

PoppyFleur · 13/02/2023 08:13

Good quality dry food, like Arden Grange, is so much cheaper than Felix et al. It’s also better for the cat’s teeth.

Okunevo · 13/02/2023 08:27

I wish dry cat food had the number of days food for a average cat displayed on the front. Some food looks cheap but you need to feed them double the amount.

xogossipgirlxo · 13/02/2023 09:23

Whiskas is slightly cheaper than Felix. You can try with Aldi vitacat, it's in jelly too. My cats like it. They hate Lidl food (I bought it in case they go on strike and refuse to eat their normal food, it's not edible according to them).

ifonly4 · 13/02/2023 11:28

To be honest, the best value cat food is the one your lord or lady ships will constantly eat without fail!!

Having said that, Butchers is very good value for money. My last two eat it all the time until old age. My present two just won't touch it!

RusticChips · 13/02/2023 16:01

totally agree with @ifonly4 have a very fussy Lord. I would prefer it if he ate a better quality food but he is not having it. Have been buying Whiskers x 84 pouches from Amazon for £31.50 which I mix with cat soup because he doesn't like it dry. I have just looked and they have gone up to £49.99 - just as I found one he would eat 🙄

FenghuangHoyan · 13/02/2023 16:06

Another vote for Butchers if you can get them to eat it. My two used to until they discovered (in a cattery) Felix. Butchers is very good quality as well as being cheap.

Chickdaft · 13/02/2023 19:36

For those who have only one or two cats, then buying felix etc is probably okish. For those of us with more than two cats then tins it is,plus biscuits (whiskas while it’s still at a fiver a bag). My lot have the same choices I had as a kid…..take it or leave it. They take it as cats are very good at training those with just one or two to lean towards felix or a better brand. I had felix in recently as used it to bait a cat trap for a a cat that had got a bit lost half a mile away and the others knew it was in the pet cupboard and would break in to massacre the pouches as it was like crack to them! 😂 Back to tins they are and are all healthy and well fed.

Ironfloor269 · 17/02/2023 17:06

I googled and nothing called 'Butchers' cat food comes up. I can only see a brand called 'Classic'. The Butchers brand is a dog food brand?

Dmsandfloatydress · 17/02/2023 17:12

I've taken to buying yellow sticker beef mince. Much cheaper than cat food, which is ridiculous! I give it to them with a small amount of dry food. A packet costs a quid and lasts two cats several days as its all protein. They used to have pouches but I can't bloody afford it anymore.

It may be fine if they are getting enough dry food too, but just muscle meat will be lacking in nutrients they need. In the wild they would be eating more than just the muscle meat of a rat or rabbit for example.

Yes, I think that's the one. Google "Butcher's classic ocado" & you'll see it.

LynetteScavo · 17/02/2023 17:28

I have a fussy cat and find a large box of Sheba or Felix in B&M bargains works well, combined with dry food. I only have one cat now, so do buy expensive dry food, but I think it's works out cheaper than just pouches.

Toastnjams · 20/02/2023 23:08

Whiskers, Felix, lots of own brands are actually really bad. They only have about 4% meat. Butchers classic is not too bad, lily's kitchen is great and lots of German food on zooplus is excellent. Dry food should NOT be given to cats. . . I've done lots of research

PuttingOnTheKitsch · 20/02/2023 23:12

Butcher's Classic Cat as everyone said, is great. Good quality and no added sugar, unlike Felix. My Mum and Dad's poor cat ended up with only three teeth after a lifetime of Felix pouches.

They’re not really bad and they’re not 4% meat!
They’re 4% named meat. There are no fillers. The meat used might not be the best quality but it is meat.

Beef Felix ingredients:

Meat and animal derivatives* (of which beef 4%)
Fish and fish derivatives
Minerals
Various sugars

I have 3 middle-aged cats, aged 7-10, who have Felix wet food pouches (fish in jelly) and Iams senior dry. They are all fit, healthy and shiny. In the past I’ve tried both better quality food, eg Bozita, and tins of Felix in jelly, but they rejected it all. They just love the pouches! (And the pouches can now be recycled with soft plastics at Tesco)

I get the boxes of 40, which used to be c £10 but lately have snuck up to £12.50 or worse. They have 3 a day between them so a box lasts about 2 weeks; still less than £1 a day.

It’s worth checking on google every time you’re buying to see what offers there are.

I didn’t know Butchers did cat food. Our dogs are fed on it. If anyone is giving the dog food to cats, be aware that cat food is usually (and should be) fortified with taurine, an amino acid that cats need a fairly high amount of in their diets. If they don’t get enough, they develop digestive problems and their fur tends to fall out.

We have two dogs and two cats and the increasing costs of their food is shocking. As I said, our dogs have Butchers (they always have had) and do well on it. We tried own brand cat foods, but I noticed that it includes refined sugar (it’s a great preservative and bulking agent). One of ours is 11-years-old and since cats can develop diabetes like humans, we have stopped feeding those. We have started feeding Blink cat food. It looks very good and isn’t especially expensive, especially when compared to those where half the packet/tin is jelly or gravy. Blink is just fortified meat or fish, with no extra liquid.

Butchers do cat food as well. Supermarkets sell it. I don’t think anyone is suggesting that dog food should be fed to cats. 🙄

They are bad and they do have fillers and sugars, sugars are soooo bad for cats. Grain free/sugar free food is much better and at least 40% meat.

The meat and animal derivatives are generally scraps left over and contains “by-products” and other ingredients that are often considered to be unhealthy for cats.

Cats should also have a rotation of a few different makes of food for a couple of reasons

  1. if you only feed your cat 1 make of food, what happens if the recipe changes/ your cat goes off the food, having a rotation means you always have a back up
  2. Different brands can have different nutrients so your cat will be getting a better diet all round.

Someone said blink cat food - this is really good food.

Smila, Catz finefood, Rosies farm, Wild freedom, Macs, Bozita, Animonda carney, all really good foods which can be bought online and if you you buy in bulk it's cheaper with free delivery. There are also smaller trial packs.

or

Blink, Natures menu, Lillys kitchen, Wainwrights, Purely can be bought from supermarkets and Pets at Home if you didn't want to order online.

There is also a lot of info online about dry food - it's really bad for cats
