Energy prices set to rise another 40 percent.

So it seems Jeremy Hunt is refusing to lower the price cap despite falling gas prices meaning we are looking at another 40 percent hike in April.
We have 2 severely disabled kids who rely on lots of medical equipment and need a warm. house to stay well and that's not to mention the endless washing.
We paid £700 for December and are looking at around £600 for January so another 40 percent sees us paying up to a thousand a month in the winter.
I know spring is on the horizon but how on earth will people cope next winter ?
And all whilst energy companies double their profits to mega billions! It is disgusting!

flapjackfairy · 06/02/2023 09:05

The energy cap is ending, so that's why there's a 40% increase in April

Minimalme · 06/02/2023 09:14

We are in the same position.

I am not surprised the government don't give a shit. They have consistently shafted those of us in a lower economic group since they came into power.

Imagine a society which needs warm hubs and food banks to keep people alive and yet has a royal family, celebrities and a class system alive and well?

It is like a reality show re-make of 'The Inspector Calls'.

So depressing. The Tory days are numbered though. One of my family members has always been a Tory/Lib Dem voter. Has a big house, large household income. A ‘people should work’ attitude. They told me last week they were determined to vote Labour at the next election (this would have been unthinkable to them even three years ago). Hopefully the Tories will be wiped out.

Energy prices are not “set to rise by another 40%”. The price cap is increasing from £2500 to £3000. That’s a 20% increase, which admittedly is still quite a lot. The 40% figure comes from including the £400 which everyone has had, to help them through the winter, and which is ending. Also, that 40% is based on average use figures.

Help is now being targeted. Those on lower incomes and means tested benefits are receiving further help (including a further £900 over the next year or so for those on means tested benefits). There is other help for some households too.

It seems strange that The Guardian has failed to mention this extra help….

I thought there was another £900 targeted too

But not sure when

Gmamaofboys13 · 06/02/2023 10:20

the maximum amount suppliers can charge increasing by 20%.

In reality though, all households will actually see an even bigger rise to bills of 43% as the £400 payment all homes are getting this winter under the energy bill support scheme will not be extended.

Gmamaofboys13 · 06/02/2023 10:23

The £900 is split into 3 payments, the first is £300 due to be paid spring 2023, the next is £300 in autumn 2023, and the final payment of £300 is due spring 2024, only for those on certain means tested benefits and who meet certain criteria (it's not necessarily a given that if you received cost of living payments before, that you're eligible for the up and coming ones)

Whiskers4 · 06/02/2023 10:32

Bulb have pointed out to a that a 20% increase can be expected from April. Also, the last monthly payment from the government will be next month.

Really want to build up a good amount of credit if we can after that in readiness for next winter.

user1471505356 · 06/02/2023 10:37

According to the BBC this morning's TV despite the cap going up prices will fall in April due to gas prices changing, I live in hope.

Unless you're single with no DC and on min wage then you won't get anything
I'm lucky enough that I have a low mortgage but I don't know how single people with large rents will cope

Aposterhasnoname · 06/02/2023 10:41

gas prices are predicted to fall below the current price cap in July and remain at that level next winter.

Thats one person. Theres millions of Tory voters out there

flapjackfairy · 06/02/2023 11:08

@Wheretheskyisblue
Thankyou for the link. Am I reading it wrong then because it seems to be saying that although prices of wholesale gas are falling the Gov wont reduce the cap.which dictates what the suppliers can charge ?
And much as I would be grateful for 900 towards the cost realistically for a family like ours that will only cover a month and a half if that.

But we have no choices because our children are dependant on machines to keep them healthy and indeed alive .
@Gunpowder please God you are right though I don't see any easy fix to the mess we are in now no matter who is in power.
( But if your name hints at a plot to remove the current government count me in ! )

Apparently 8 million households will qualify for it.

Rebel2023 · 06/02/2023 11:36

@Another76543 crossed fingers
Previously it's been if you're on UC, but I can't get UC as I earn too much and don't have children
£1300pm goes nowhere now with bills

Rebel2023 · 06/02/2023 11:38

There you go

Pensioners and means tested benefits so if you don't receive any benefits you don't get any assistance

@flapjackfairy I'm sorry your fuel needs are high, it's scary not having the option of cutting back due to ill/disabled people in the home.

im not sure which bit is confusing you though? Can you be more sorcific. The fuel CAP is just that, the upper limit, it doesn't mean the companies will be charging that & hopefully the competition between them will drive prices down. 🤞🏼🤞🏼

it sounds like you will qualify for the £900. If not I want to know why not!! & if you're not in your situation, who the hell is!

tulips27 · 06/02/2023 11:43

@Rebel2023

was your first post a typo then??

Unless you're single with no DC and on min wage then you won't get anything

I haven't looked as I know I won't get any help. But lots of people qualify for 'in work benefits'

you earn too much & don't have children to support, so I'm not sure why you think you should get help (which everyone will be paying for, it's not magic money! Obviously you (&I) would like to get 'help' but frankly I'd rather it was targeted to those who really need it.

@tulips27

Did you read that post correctly?

why would a single person with no DC get help when a single person with DC wouldn't??

CatOnTheChair · 06/02/2023 11:57

If prices fall below the price cap, some companies will start offering fixes again tho - because there will be money to be made by having more customers.

Rebel2023 · 06/02/2023 12:01

@WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody I guess my point is that no, I people on min wage do need it. That's one income to pay everything

How do people on min wage pay say £600 rent, £100 c tax, £150 energy... that's not even touching the bills

My dad gets around £2000 in pensions and is entitled to all the payments pensioners get but on £1200/1300pm I don't get anything

Yes, people with DC need it, but they keep saying low income people will get help - min wage single IS low income and there isn't any help for that
