Supply your OWN energy meters!

I've put this here as there doesn't seem to be a board for household bills or utilities.

I'm hoping this may help the ever increasing numbers of us who are being pressured to accept smart meters, particularly if you struggle paying your bills. Companies are increasingly changing these to prepayment remotely, so if you cannot pay you are effectively disconnecting yourself.

For anyone interested, it turns out you can actually purchase your own gas or electricity credit meter, and have it installed yourself if your energy company refuse! Some companies charge hundreds of sounds to install a standard credit never instead of a smart meter. However, more and more companies are saying you can't have one because they don't have any, or are no longer available, but this is an outright lie.

This company give advice, and can also provide meters and perform installations.

This company sell standalone meters, both gas and electricity. Electricity under £50, gas from as little as £20. Obviously, you would need to obtain the relevant advice as to what would be appropriate for your property.

Exactly that, i have been having an absolute nightmare with this.

We cannot even have them in the area as they are not available yet, but i am now being told that my meter is faulty and they HAVE to come an install one and its fine with them if we find another supplier.

Will be interesting to see there response when i ask if we can install our own meter and if this presents as a satisfactory resolve.

What was the outcome of this?
I’ve ust been informed by email from Scottish Power to book in for a smart meter as my current meter has come to the end of its life.
huh...?

I thought was illegal for anyone who is not appointed by the Energy company to touch the meter. There are a lot of conmen out there offering to install meters for illegal purposes so I would be very cautious on anything like this that looks too good to be true. It probably is

What do you mean by "illegal purposes"?

Genuine question from a Smart Meter Resistor (getting very fed up of EDFs constant texts and emails implying this is a legal requirement too Confused)

Everyone is saying it lets them see exactly what they are using. Ok, I get that

But as a household who are extremely energy efficient (and every reading and bill since we've had our home has said we use way less than average) I don't see how that's a benefit? As we aren't using anything unnecessary or for longer than needed?

Haven't ruled one out but at the moment I don't see the need

I use way less than average too. I've seen pensioner friends watching and worrying about how much they're using and then turning down the heating when they really need to turn it up.

Eh?? I honestly don't get the conspiracy theories around smart meters.

Which parts of that post are the conspiracy theories?

I cant believe no one has even mentioned the strong EMF given off by smart meters, we know that emf's are seriously damaging to your health and a smart meter gives off way more than a mobile phone or a router. Why would you want anymore emf's in your home than you already have, causing harm to yourself, your children and pets??
There was a case in the usa, where all the smart meters for a small block of apartments were on one outside wall, on the otherside of that wall was a young man's bedroom. He started feeling ill almost straight after moving in and got worse and worse and within 6 months died from a huge cancer tumour on his brain, There were 12 meters on the otherside of his bedroom wall.

Yes, just because you can't see EMF doesn't mean it's not zapping you.
I had a boiler problem last winter due to freezing temperatures, and had to turn off the gas heating for months as I couldnt afford a new boiler. It hadn't occurred to me that the programme worked on wifi. (I have no TV and always turn the phone off at night) But after a couple of weeks I realised I was sleeping so much better...🤔

Hawk666 · 07/10/2024 11:57

Hi all, get a fully qualified electrician to take out old meter and install ur own, make sure it is compatible with ur home usage, get a certificate from engineer, then box and keep old meter, make sure you get meter check off engineer who installed it or another that is NOT connected to the usually sorry corporates because they won't want you to have ur own meter, protect ur meter and find energy companies that will price you fairly, also to all the SHEEP out there,, the smart meter is NOT UR FRIEND guys, wake the fik up!!!!

Some facts for those interested.
Fact energy is created from the land.. at point of entry its free for all.. then they corporate it and then the middle man steps in aka suppliers.. ovo. Octopus. Utilia on and on.. these are brokers for the government? To ensure that you pay up now smart meters have a serial number these brokers Rent to you.. this serial number tells them what you use.. they then take their cut from whatever the government decides is the price that week.. basically we are all paying a broker? Middle man thousands a year to keep you in line.. simple and fact.

Any advice on how to pay the Grid with fitting own meter? I've had eon cut my power to fit a smart meter that I didn't want or agree to and wanting to not pay a broker but I can't see how to pay the Grid direct once I've had an analogue meter fitted. Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm on my own with a disabled child, I'd be very grateful 🙏

maxipooh · 07/11/2024 15:20

Truthmum · 28/11/2023 06:00

Don't tell me was it utilita they robbed me thousands I was paying triple gas bills and then they add debt to my electric .
I have a complaint on going .
Energy company's are 3 rd party brokers they do not supply your energy .
Best to buyback instil your own box's and buy tokens and top up that way .
Pay for what you use only.
They steal money of you. Legally and lawfully they can not deny you to do that
They will threaten you sure but they can't. If they say you owe them then send them a promissory note

How can we just pay for what we use? I want to fit an analogue meter as suffering severe headaches in the back of my head, there are 6 SMART meters under my bedroom. I understand I need to get a certified engineer etc but how can we pay the Grid direct for energy do you know at all?
Many thanks in advance for any advice 🙏

You don’t pay the grid, you pay your supplier whatever meter you use. I’m not sure why you’d want to fit your own - that means you are paying for two, one that’s built into your bills as part of regulated tariffs and the one you want to to fit yourself. This thread is bonkers.

You're missing it. The 'supplier' you're stating is only supplying the meter for which we are charged. The grid supplies the energy up to the meter and then on of the well known 'companies' fit the meter and charge you for the kW rate and add their fees on top. Some research around, the network, transmission, distribution and supply will educate you. Perhaps you won't call this thread bonkers when you're a little more enlightened.

Aroundthetwist · 08/11/2024 07:42

@maxipooh, I work in the energy industry, it’s my specialist topic - I am very much enlightened.

This thread is full of conspiracy theories !! The cost of all smart meters is spread across the industry as a whole, so everybody pays for them, whether or not they have one. The cost is included in the Ofgem regulated price cap - this includes both the meter and the whole communication infrastructure network.

If you want to buy and have your own fitted, you are effectively paying twice.

I know all about the composition of the price cap, the hedging profiles of the big energy companies, smart metering, long-term gas purchase contracts, T&D costs, renewable energy and LNG. When I see such a ridiculous thread full of misinformation it’s my responsibility to call it out !

Xenia · 08/11/2024 12:36

My own view (as an anti-smart meter person) is just to do nothing. So far I have not had one forced on me. I don't even click to indicate I don't want one as even that might trap me into their net.

luckyliam1976 · 08/11/2024 16:14

the reason to have your own meter is two fold because we dont want pay mark up and fraudulent credit agreement no.one sign and dont want rent.meter that be paid for 100 times

Hawk666 · 09/11/2024 18:10

You do not pay 2 suppliers if you have one meter, you can legally get ur old meter taken out by a fully qualified electrician and replaced with one you want, amazon have good selection, just work out what ur house hold will use in kw, also , keep old meter just incase old companies want it back,, box it up, so ur new let's say amazon meter does have its own serial number, but no supplier has that number because they DID NOT SUPPLY YOU WITH UR NEW AMAZON METER, therefore ur serial number is not out there,, so you can then relax knowing you can get the best tariff and that ur old smart meter is no longer cooking you in ur own home? But the greatest thing about not being forced to have a smart meter is they have no power to JUST SWITCH YOU OFF and that my friends is priceless.

Aroundthetwist · 10/11/2024 08:41

To clarify, the whole cost of all smart meters and the communication infrastructure is spread across EVERYBODY, whether or not you have an actual smart meter. It’s part of your energy bill, it’s part of the tariff that you pay your supplier.

You don’t individually pay your supplier for your own smart meter, but the overall cost is spread across all customers. Ofgem have a compulsory mandate to require suppliers to fit them as part of their supply licence conditions.

So getting your own meter fitted definitely means you are paying twice - once through your tariff for your share of smart meter costs, and once for the meter you’ve bought direct and had installed (what a waste of money !). And being swapped onto a prepayment tariff is fair if you have energy debt because most ‘bad debt’ is also spread across all customers too and is a price cap allowance - if your neighbour doesn’t pay, you get charged through your tariff, hence why it’s in everybody’s interest for people to pay their bills.

It's definitely not compulsory to have a smart meter at all. The energy 'brokers' only bill people for their asset which is the meter, they DO NOT provide the energy used, this is the NETWORK and depending where people live that maybe SPEnergy or National Grid or GTC. The billing agents are only billing agents they do not create the energy nor do they transport it, they merely bill.

I suggest you STOP scare mongering and do your homework. As you are spreading hugely inaccurate information.

People have a right in law to have a private meter fitted as long as it is by a qualified person that is FACT and even on parliament information gov.uk.

maxipooh · 17/12/2024 15:52

Please can you tell me how to do this, I've contacted the National Grid and they said they didn't know what I was talking about, but I am aware we can legally have a meter fitted by a competent person. Have you been successful? Thanks
