Supply your OWN energy meters!

I've put this here as there doesn't seem to be a board for household bills or utilities.

I'm hoping this may help the ever increasing numbers of us who are being pressured to accept smart meters, particularly if you struggle paying your bills. Companies are increasingly changing these to prepayment remotely, so if you cannot pay you are effectively disconnecting yourself.

For anyone interested, it turns out you can actually purchase your own gas or electricity credit meter, and have it installed yourself if your energy company refuse! Some companies charge hundreds of sounds to install a standard credit never instead of a smart meter. However, more and more companies are saying you can't have one because they don't have any, or are no longer available, but this is an outright lie.

This company give advice, and can also provide meters and perform installations.

This company sell standalone meters, both gas and electricity. Electricity under £50, gas from as little as £20. Obviously, you would need to obtain the relevant advice as to what would be appropriate for your property.

I really hope this helps someone.

SEE wanted £450 to supply, install the new meter, and take away the old one

GPTec1 · 06/02/2023 20:40

@Aroundthetwist Octopus intentionally don't make a profit, they do of course but plough the money back into renewable energy schemes in the UK, Japan and the USA among other countries, how that benefits the public, i'm not sure.

We should not be using self disconnect on anyone.

The smart meter roll out, forced upon us and the industry by Govt (like smart motorways) is funded by consumers to the tune of 11bn on our bills.

What a total waste.

CollaborativeTransformation · 10/10/2023 18:22

Exactly that, i have been having an absolute nightmare with this.

We cannot even have them in the area as they are not available yet, but i am now being told that my meter is faulty and they HAVE to come an install one and its fine with them if we find another supplier.

Will be interesting to see there response when i ask if we can install our own meter and if this presents as a satisfactory resolve.

CollaborativeTransformation · 10/10/2023 18:24

Does anyone know of an electric supplier who actually has provided permission for the consumer to install their own meter?.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/10/2023 18:30

Genuine question from a Smart Meter Resistor (getting very fed up of EDFs constant texts and emails implying this is a legal requirement too Confused)

Everyone is saying it lets them see exactly what they are using. Ok, I get that

But as a household who are extremely energy efficient (and every reading and bill since we've had our home has said we use way less than average) I don't see how that's a benefit? As we aren't using anything unnecessary or for longer than needed?

Haven't ruled one out but at the moment I don't see the need

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 10/10/2023 18:32

Actually the only upside I can see is, certainly of EDF are typical, we ate limited to what new tariff we can choose. Bastards Angry

Xenia · 10/10/2023 18:47

tellme I have about 100 reasons to refuse a smart meter from EDF. Currently they seem to have stopped chasing me. I don't mind others having them if they want them of course. I don't blame EDF for the blackmail (worst tariff if no smart meter) because it the state which has imposed on them the move to smart meters.

Some facts for those interested.
Fact energy is created from the land.. at point of entry its free for all.. then they corporate it and then the middle man steps in aka suppliers.. ovo. Octopus. Utilia on and on.. these are brokers for the government? To ensure that you pay up now smart meters have a serial number these brokers Rent to you.. this serial number tells them what you use.. they then take their cut from whatever the government decides is the price that week.. basically we are all paying a broker? Middle man thousands a year to keep you in line.. simple and fact.

Eh?? I honestly don't get the conspiracy theories around smart meters.

Hawk666 · 24/11/2023 10:54

You say conspiracy ? Why force them on us then? Why is uk energy so out of control? Why are all these people talking about it? Maybe you are happy with what ur being told you can have but there are many of us that don't and won't fall into line like lambs to tge slaughter.. be it what you will it to be.. don't lable me because you have no real answers.. I'm just going off what I see since covid and I see control simple. Ps I will ask you the same question if you are happy with the choices you made a little down the line.. I'll put every penny on it you switched....

Floofydawg · 24/11/2023 12:06

Whatevs, no one forced me to get mine. Don't get one if you don't want one - your choice. Doesn't mean I have to understand or agree with what you're going on about.

Hawk666 · 24/11/2023 15:34

Right back @you sweetcheeks.

forgotmyusername1 · 25/11/2023 08:26

My smart meter saves me a fortune.

I am on agile tarrif. My last bill was average unit price of 6.49p for electric rather than 28p on standard tarriff

Truthmum · 28/11/2023 06:00

Don't tell me was it utilita they robbed me thousands I was paying triple gas bills and then they add debt to my electric .
I have a complaint on going .
Energy company's are 3 rd party brokers they do not supply your energy .
Best to buyback instil your own box's and buy tokens and top up that way .
Pay for what you use only.
They steal money of you. Legally and lawfully they can not deny you to do that
They will threaten you sure but they can't. If they say you owe them then send them a promissory note

luckyliam1976 · 13/03/2024 03:51

ive one has own meters installed is there no standing charge and who do you pay for what is used

Xenia · 13/03/2024 21:10

I have a traditional meter but chose the tariff where you pay for what you use in the last month - that works fine for me although I do have to submit a reading once a month. I like the fact that it is higher in winter and low in summer and I never have big debits or credits building up.

Chelsmark · 21/05/2024 18:34

I cant believe no one has even mentioned the strong EMF given off by smart meters, we know that emf's are seriously damaging to your health and a smart meter gives off way more than a mobile phone or a router. Why would you want anymore emf's in your home than you already have, causing harm to yourself, your children and pets??
There was a case in the usa, where all the smart meters for a small block of apartments were on one outside wall, on the otherside of that wall was a young man's bedroom. He started feeling ill almost straight after moving in and got worse and worse and within 6 months died from a huge cancer tumour on his brain, There were 12 meters on the otherside of his bedroom wall.

How did you do that? we've a eco 7 meter with the wrong time on it, no idea how to change the time.
Octopus say they will replace with a smart meter only.

Find an independent meter installer. You can purchase an electric meter. Buy your energy straight from the national grid.

Xenia · 24/08/2024 09:16

Mine seem to be working fine so not had to have a new non smart one installed. However the pressure from EDF has ramped up again with in my view extremely misleading emails now. They have also stopped for 2 months reminding me to submit a meter which does not matter as I can just submit mine and get my exact bill for the month £188 was yesterday's (obviously it will be massively h igher in winter but that is fine - at least I understand it and do not have big credits and debits through the year). I am also glad to see on a different issue analogue landlines have had a reprieve to 2027 as the providers have realised so many people rely on them in various ways so my land lines live on as do my older meters.

TinaCx · 24/08/2024 09:18

Not sure but I've watched something on YouTube that might be helpful by a Richard Vobe.

Beth216 · 24/08/2024 09:29

We were told by our energy company that we had to get a smart meter as our old one wouldn't work past a certain date (that has long gone now). We arranged for them to come and put one in, the guy came, told us the letter was a lie, said he couldn't put it in anyway due to some wiring not being completely up to date and he'd need to arrange for someone to come out and do it.

This was years ago and haven't heard from them since.

Hilbillie · 06/10/2024 14:49

It's not their product.
